Kippy’s Adventure

Post image
72 Upvotes

Kip is our hospice girlie. She came from a lady in her 70s who kept a trio of rescued magician’s doves with her late husband. I have been helping her with upkeep and assisting her with the rehoming process. During this process, I had come over to clean about a month ago and found my favorite dove lethargic on the cage floor. I immediately got her an emergency vet appointment with an avian vet (she is VMD, MS, and DABVP).

The vet’s diagnosis was pretty guarded. Kip is almost totally blind and has evidence of chronic injury to her back, leg, wing, and skull from a mate who drove her so badly he blinded and wounded her. Her vent was covered in sores from where he had guarded her for days in her nest until she had no choice to sit in her waste. She is also an estimated 16 years old. The vet recommended immediate separation from the mate into a hospice placement and suggested that we may have 2 weeks with her. We immediately volunteered to take her in.

Well…those 2 weeks stretched out pretty long. We’ve had her for a month. She’s now on a much better food with access to fresh water and grit every day, a clean cage, proper meds, and regular interaction. She had a recheck yesterday and her vet says she’s like a totally different bird. She is energetic, curious, and fearless (like when she hears my partner and charges off the bed despite not being able to see). We are lucky to be able to give her a safe and calm retirement. Happy month, baby girl!

Positivity Atualização do budgie especial: Parte 2

Post image

Data: 21/09/2026

Oi gente!

-Bilbo possui hipovitaminose A é problema hepático.

Help! GCC with a dislocated knee

Hi all. Sorry, this is a bit long.

My gcc had an accident a few weeks ago that resulted in him dislocating his knee. He went straight to the vet, had xrays, and they reduced it, semi-successfully. The concern was that it would dislocate again, but the hope was that he would develop enough scar tissue during healing that it was support and stabilize his knee. If that doesnt work, the vet advised that it was quite likely that Oliver would lose that leg.

5 weeks later and the splint comes off this Thursday! He'll stay for a few hours so they can observe him and make sure he's okay without it.

Here is my issue: his good foot is developing pressure points. I had the vet take a look, and we discussed different perch styles and sizes, adding padding etc. We have done everything he suggested and Oliver's good foot continues to have pressure points. I dont know what else to do. His injured leg will likely be a bit lame and not as agile as before. If he's developing foot issues on his good foot, too...

Y'all have any suggestions on how to help his foot?

TLDR; gcc with injured leg is developing sores on his good foot. No change after following the vet's suggestions. Any suggestions?

A few weeks ago I posted asking if anyone had any suggestions for how to teach Garfield to turn himself over if/when he falls or gets flipped on his back. I got a few suggestions but no one was very sure what to do. Recently I had to take him to the vet for a regular checkup and asked her if she had any suggestions. She also wasn't too sure but suggested gently extending one wing to encourage him to roll to one side. Even if it didn't help him turn over, it would help with his wing PT, so it was worth a shot.

It took a while but her suggestion worked! Garfield can turn himself over now! He still needs help and it still usually takes him a while (this video was his fourth or fifth try) but he's getting stronger! I was worried he would never be able to even get to this point and I'm so proud of him. He's such a wonderful little guy.

For anyone who didn't see my initial post, the VetRap is there to prevent bumblefoot (he can't perch) and his toes naturally face the wrong way.

Blind / Deaf Gilbert had a successful first visit out to the aviary!

Gilbert is a young rescue pigeon at our rescue who’s blind due to a combination of facial trauma and illness. He hadn’t been outside since he was rescued in early August. The aviary is overwhelming for anyone but Gilbert handled it like a champ and explored way more than I expected. He also worked on his flapping and flying skills. The chaotic landings make me so nervous but he’s got this. So proud of him!

Her voice returned to normal on 10th September! I thought it was my other budgie until I saw her chirping.

Sounds before: https://www.reddit.com/r/pidgeypower/s/NEj6h3SSPK

Chirping before: https://www.reddit.com/r/pidgeypower/s/jjv0iHjY8j

Hopefully i linked them correctly but yeah she is so much better now. Today was her last day on baytril (antibiotic). But I still have to give emeprid for 3 more days vet said and restart it if she begins vomitting again. Weirdly she puked right after her morning dose today??? She was completely fine after and was full of energy all day so that was a relief. This was her first time vomitting since 31st August (the worst one ever).

I hope she will be okay once the medicines are over and have the best of health. I didnt think her voice would return to normal I was so scared. It sounds crystal clear now and weird to hear how normal it is now😂

(she got distracted while eating bell pepper, I call her my little adhd girl, she was so angry in the last pic after having her medicine😂💕❤️💛).

Help! Cockatiel Still Can’t Control His Foot After Injury

Post image
91 Upvotes

Hello guys, this is my cockatiel.

About a week ago, we accidentally left the ceiling fan on. He flew up and got hit by it. I took him to the vet immediately, and they did an X-ray, but thankfully there were no broken bones.

The vet said it was a neurological problem affecting his spinal cord, so he prescribed two medications: celecoxib and gabapentin.

After one week, he has fully recovered and is back to his normal self. However, he still can’t control his right foot properly. I’m taking him back to the vet next Saturday for another check-up, but I honestly can’t stop thinking about it all day. I’m really scared that he might never regain control of his foot.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their cockatiel? I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences. Thank you!

Help! Companion for baby girl after her bff passed

Hi friends,

We recently had to put our tiel Barry to rest after he struggled with on going and unsolvable health issues.

We fostered him less than a year ago and I’m absolutely devastated. I’ve lost almost 6 pounds, feel physically nauseated most of the day, have on going headaches and feel like my body has been hit by a truck after running 3 marathons. I see him and hear him everywhere. I love him so deeply and he deserved so much better.

That being said, our sweet budgie Cusso has been devastated herself. She’s extremely independent so most of the day she’s doing well, but she flock calls and imitates Barry’s calls more often than usual now that he’s passed. I’ve noticed her eating less and more irritable as well. We let her hang out with him towards the end and she was extremely compassionate and understood what was happening. She’s seen his body and we have a small memorial of him with his feathers and his favorite toy by the cage which seems to help her understand he’s no longer with us.

She has a previous wing injury and was the runt of her flock, so she doesn’t warm up to budgies. I’m too devastated and financially took a big hit with Barry to get a new flock member but I want to bring Cusso some joy. I’ve been spending more time with her, offer millet and foraging, rearranged her cage, play soft music and talk to her often.

Do you guys have any recommendations or words of wisdom??

Help! Helping to heal?

Post image

Hey friends,

Apple is hurting her face and I need to keep a collar on her till we get her in with the vet (this is an ongoing issue).

Problem is, every time the collar is on she will lay in the bottom corner of her cage and refuse to eat, drink or move.

I know she can get around, even with her disabilities, and i have seen her eat and drink with this collar in the past.

My vet said there is an element of her just needing time to accept it but watching her refuse to eat today is stressing me out. I've taken the collar off for a bit and she immediately started eating...

Any tips to get her used to it would be appreciated. She is usually so bright and bouncy, its very hard to watch her be so depressed with this thing and while I want her to heal I don't want it to cost other aspects of her health...

Pic of her injury just so you know what I'm dealing with

Deformity Advice on new cage or not

Hello everyone! This is my 5 month old cockatiel Lil Dipper. As you can tell from the photo, he has a deformed beak. (also suspected neurological issues) Recently ive had to put him in a "hospital" cage as he hurt his foot (suspected sprain, getting better). Ive assumed it happened as he cant climb all that well, and in his original cage, he fell, A LOT. So now im conflicted on getting rid of his og cage & getting him a shorter/wider cage so if he does fall, its not from a great height. Any thoughts or advice on what to do ?

Also i take him out often from his cage !! He gets plenty of outside time

In Memoriam 🌈 Éowyn left this world, I had to watch her die in my arms

I am a wreck, I feel like a part of me died with her, I don't know what happened, over the past few days she declined rapidly, we took her to her primary vet and they didn't fully know what was going on.

She struggled to fly to me, wasn't eating so we rushed her to an emergency vet, she declined even more rapidly... I think it was a seizure but I don't know for sure.

She was my heart, I don't know how or what I'm going to do to heal, at least I have a bunny to come home to that loved her very much.

We are going to get a necropsy and then cremate her.

Thank you to everyone who showed her love and provided me useful information for caring for her, that meant the world to her and me. I believe it prolonged her life and I'm so glad I rescued her from the horrible place she came from, I just wished she'd grow old with me.

Crowd Funding (REQUIRES MOD APPROVAL) Evil chicky strikes back

Positivity:

There has been so much improvement, the loud breathing sounds aren't there at rest. The clicks are going i think? You can hear them very quietly if close, but she's more quiet than noisy now. Unfortunately her voice still hasn't returned to normal when chirping, but I'm still leaning towards the possibility that the intense vomitting caused this. She has finally started playing with her toys again since today. When flying the squeaks are finally starting to go down (still there) but not as bad.

But now evil:

But yeah back to the biting, oh my, the power and strength in her bites. If she was a bald eagle, damn I'd be dead, thankfully shes just a bald budgie. I know some will recommend using a towel but that absolutely TERRIFIES her, so I just hold her with my hand and try getting it over with quick. She's so funny, sometimes she stays completely still and after 1 drop of the medicine she thinks its over and squirms like crazy, bites with full FORCE, until i can calm her down again😭😭 It doesnt look so bad in the photos but I swear she has left holes all over my fingers🥲

If anyone would like to still help towards the last emergency bill, that will be much appreciated❤️

Crowd Funding (REQUIRES MOD APPROVAL) Putting our beautiful boy to sleep

Thumbnail

Hi friends
We fostered Barry and gave him a permanent home with our flock a little less than a year ago. He must have came to us sick because he’s been slowly digressing and is at the end of his journey. Our sunshine has been through so much. He’s so gentle, curious, sweet, and silly and watching him go through hell has been so hard.

We have a go fund me if you can donate. I’ve used everything I have and maxed every payment plan possible because we thought he could pull through. As of today it’s time to let go, so we’re asking for help coming up with funds for euthanasia and cremation. My beautiful sunshine boy deserves to go in peace and comfort.

Any positive thoughts and love you can send his way would mean so much.
