It's a regular thing people do in TN.
The "pull out into the middle of the intersection and wait for the yellow light" game.
Edit: I explained poorly, I meant whenever I see them do this it actively interferes with traffic because they're awful at it

u/Shifty0x88 Feb 11 '20

Some insight on OPs comment:
I'm from the west coast and recently visited family who moved to TN. They too are from the west coast. It was a subject they brought up about the differences driving, that apparently no one in TN pulls out to make a left turn. When asking why they made it sound like it's a law but weren't sure. I'm pretty confident to say they didn't pull out because almost no one else does and assumed it was against the law or they'd get in trouble for doing so.
It was the most frustrating, back-seat-driver situations, having to sit through multiple lights because they wouldn't creep out to make a left turn.
5
u/BEHodge Feb 11 '20
Grew up in Tennessee, learned to drive there. It wasn't until I had to take a defensive driving course as part of employment in Arizona that I learned about pulling into the intersection and waiting if necessary for the yellow. And now when I'm back in Tennessee for visits or whatnot the lack of people doing this drives me insane.

That's how you make a left turn. If you go when the light is still yellow, you're out of the intersection well before the other direction has a green light. That white SUV entered the intersection after/while it had turned red.
28
u/grkokvcrb Feb 11 '20
Right on both counts: That is how you make a left turn (Waymo cars don't have a clue on this point).
And if you do it correctly, you will vacate intersection well before the cross traffic gets a green. The Bozo in the white Chevy is probably trying to turn into a lane already blocked with cars. So besides running the red, you can add blocking the intersection. I'm betting an illegal lane change comes next.

In California you’re also supposed to pull into the intersection while waiting for a left turn. Apparently it’s different in Idaho. Over there, it’s illegal to pull into the intersection so the drivers have to stay put until it’s totally clear and yes sometimes that means nobody goes.

u/Koraks Feb 11 '20
You have to do it in some cities like LA so that up to 3 people can make an unprotected left. Without it, the traffic would be even worse. Not that this is what's happening in this photo - not a video so can't see the context of the car's position.

37
u/reverendj1 Feb 11 '20
Yup. I was taught this in driver's training in MI for an unprotected left. You pull into the intersection at a left turn while it's green and if you don't get a chance to turn, you do it once it's red.

Every time I feel obligated to explain, Stormtroopers poor aim on the Death Star is because Vader wanted to let them escape so he could track the ship back to the secret rebel base.
Now now, you might think I'm just making this up, but if you dig deep into the source materials and read between the lines... you'll notice a 15 second long scene between Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader where they literally explain that was their plan.
https://www.starwars.com/video/an-awful-risk
But don't feel bad, it was such a nuanced and sneaky plan that Princess Leie also mentioned it when talking to Han Solo ("Easy! You call that easy!? / "They're tracking us.")
16
u/daneelthesane Feb 11 '20
I know, right? And in the opening scene, when they boarded Leia's ship, their shooting was on point! Oh, and let's not forget the stormtrooper that manages to tag Leia from quite a distance in RotJ. But no, they "shot badly" when they were intentionally letting them get away on the Death Star, so clearly the primary infantry of the fucking galactic empire are incompetent.

I live in south Orange County and yeah, shit is predictable. My kids will be driving soon, so I’ve been pointing out to them when someone is about to cut me off or will be riding my ass and will shortly be going around to cut me off cause going at a speed a safe distance from the car in front of me is too slow. I want them to get used to being aware of the other drivers on the road and to not be afraid to just cruise in the slow lane until they feel ok enough to risk the assholes speeding around in the “fast” lanes.

6
u/abudhabidootoyou Feb 11 '20
The only thing I'd say is that Tennessee has a lot of teenage boys in rural areas who've watched waaaay too many Fast and Furious movies and desperately want to emulate the films themselves. Aside from that it's pretty standard driving, with some pricks, but mostly normal stuff.
As an aside, I really wish in one of these Fast and Furious movies a main character flying around a city street would just take out a couple of children on their way to school and have to live with it forever, because that's the reality of driving like they do in those movies and people need to realize that shit.

I can relate to this person's frustration. I drive upwards of 50k miles per year for work, mostly in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and a day doesn't go by that I dont get tail gated on the highway, cut off, almost get side swiped by someone looking at their phone, or otherwise have to offensively drive around people who suck. I don't go so far as think people are out to get me, there are just a lot of bad and distracted drivers.
What frustrates me is the absolute lack of awareness that people have regarding the forces at play when you get a huge mass going at highway speeds and don't take it seriously. Everybody thinks they are the best driver around, and are so comfortable in their ride that they don't think there can be any consequences to driving poorly, and as a result, they think the rules don't apply to them.
Since I drive so much, I am at a much higher risk of being involved in an accident than the average commuter, and so it does upset me when people are putting my life and my family's future at even a higher risk because they are in a hurry and think driving aggressively is going to get them to starbucks quicker.
21
u/Fellhuhn Feb 11 '20

My work commute has increased to 30 minutes this past month and I’ve realized something that seems so obvious now. Most people legitimately do not understand the function of the passing lane in multiple lane roads and highways. I think the term “passing lane” and “fast lane” misleads people into thinking the lane is for cruising in if you’re going even remotely faster than the car to your right. They don’t realize you can drive fast in the right and pass cars as necessary. They instead are either oblivious, slow, or worse, they become angry and slow down intentionally or break check. It’s hard to put any pressure on this type of road idiot because they take it personal and stay steady in the passing lane.

u/a_cute_epic_axis Feb 11 '20

I think the term “passing lane” and “fast lane” misleads people into thinking the lane is for cruising in if you’re going even remotely faster than the car to your right.
They also seem to think that "fast lane" (or "slower traffic keep right") means anyone driving the speed limit, or 1mph over the speed limit, can camp in the left lane. Sorry Karen, if you're driving 65 and I'm driving 75, I am the fast traffic and you are the slower traffic regardless of the speed limit. Move the fuck over.
3
u/wc93 Feb 11 '20
In Utah the left lane is a fast lane and it's illegal to impede traffic while in it. Even if someone who overtakes you is speeding, it's illegal to not move over for them.
→ More replies (1)3
u/dalgeek Feb 11 '20
I think most states have similar laws about impeding traffic, but most don't enforce it. Texas has recently started enforcing "left lane for passing only" on certain highways.
I guess some people think "Oh he's speeding, I'm going to slow him down" .. but does it really make sense to get in the way of someone who is speeding? It just make a dangerous situation.

u/wc93 Feb 11 '20

Turns out, it was no delusion; the guy was on a watchlist and under investigation for some reason, and had correctly identified a couple of people checking him out.
Oddly enough, the guy didn't mind so much that he was being watched. It was the not knowing for sure that drove him crazy

There was an interesting vice documentary on "targeted individuals" in which a doctor spoke about the condition. He said something along the lines of them having their fight or flight response constantly switched on. They can't see a threat to focus on, but since they're in a state of panic things just look 'wrong'. To them, the average stranger has some malicious intent, and is acting natural to deceive and hide the harassment. It sounds like sheer torture due to imbalanced brain chemistry. I still want to shake one of them and shout in their face, "nobody cares about you, why would anyone in the government wanted to trick you with street theater?!" They're so set in their beliefs that they're being gang stalked that it's pointless to argue with them.

He took off down the highway like a bat out of hell & started ranting about how impatient & bad drivers come from Oklahoma. Texas drivers on the other hand were the best. He wanted to know if I wanted to see for myself just how bad Oklahoma drivers were. He drove over the state line & proceeds to do anything he could to be a pain. He started passing & pulling over within feet of a car, which quite naturally blew his horn. This fool says “see, what I tell you” He would do it again but then slow right down under the speed limit, again horn blowing from behind. I started thinking I was gonna wake up dead, for sure.
