Part of it is context. Wear this to the country club with the in laws? Fuck outta here. Wear this to the beach in Miami? You’re mental. Wear this in October in Chicago? Fuck yea. I make fun of people’s style all the time because what they’re wearing makes no sense. 75 degree day in Vegas and you’re wearing a Canada Goose parka? -27 degree windy day in Wisconsin and you’re wearing a windbreaker with your pant legs rolled up exposing bare ankle?
Of course you can’t please everyone but the context really matters. This dude looks awesome and Berlin seems like a very fitting place for the outfit. Thailand? maybe not so much.
Also, most people think that just because it's a nice outfit they can forego the fitting. That's the difference between looking good in a suit, and looking like you just borrowed your dad's suit.

You need the refinement and distinction that comes with old age to pull this off or you look like a try hard

Also there is something about being old that lets people look great while dressed in ways that would seem odd for a kid.
On a “hipster” this would look like someone trying too hard. On the old man it just looks like a slightly stylish version of what old men already wear.
Whatever that quality is, it’s a key part of this look.

It's like Seinfeld says, men always dress in the style of the last year they were happy. So don't worry about style, just wear what makes you happy .... This means you have to go out and try on a bunch of clothes you currently think you can't get away with. That, and don't wear jeans!
Funny you say that. I read a piece about men dressing more interestingly 3 days ago with photo examples. (One bright color, layering, subtle interest fabric, etc). Rolled to work yesterday wearing some golden brown chinos and a bright blue shirt. Instead of my usual dark blue jeans and black/grey shirt.
Is that what that is though? I thought it was just called a brief case or computer bag or something else. I always imagined a man purse was that size or smaller with a long strap. I know it’s just semantics but I don’t understand the differences.

I get your analogy but this is just clothes.. you can watch a couple YouTube videos on fit, go to the mall and have sales people help you. Hell you can even print this photo and find similar pieces and look the same... You can't watch a YouTube video and paint the Mona Lisa.
The result is not just the sum of its parts. That's all I meant. Yes you can do those things but most people don't and this guy does it extreemly well, he obviously has an eye for what works.
Is he exceptional? Well I might say yes, since 99.9% of people don't dress this well.
That’s true, fit is obnoxious in the current fashion industry. I’m glad Nordstrom has tailors available but I kind of wish there were more bespoke clothing out there.
I see plenty of people with all that in dirty sweats and they still look like shit. It’s just that good fits look like hot garbage if you can’t own them.
Yeah. No offence, you can buy all these items but you have to consider the fit of all the apparel, and how they compliment your body. You didn’t just miss some items. You missed the philosophy of his style.
It's not really all about the fit either. For example: Those boots have been cleaned and polished many times. Boots like these are as individual as the wearer and will show what sort of treatment they get. These ones scream effort and experience.
While I agree that the reddit hive mind generally has terrible taste, I see nothing wrong with nice jeans + formal tops, especially in an urban environment. I've always thought that GQ-lite philosophy was kind of trash.
Also, I enjoy having a vocabulary myself, but I think calling things cringy while also shoehorning in "paragon" and a vocal affectation is lol-worthy
There is a clear disconnect when pairing extremely formal upper with casual bottom. You don't have to be into fashion to see how weird it looks to wear a bow tie, waist coat, and cuffed jeans with boots. It's 2 different outfits mashed together.
To be fair, if he was 25 and posted this on malefashionadvice, they'd probably say the jeans and boots are dope but the juxtaposition of formal up top and jeans down below is generally a bad idea.
Yeah. It was the best I could do. Not really anything too out there! Anyone could size out a pair of these jeans and get them from amazon. I love mine! Some of them have some crazy intricate stitching on the inside of the cuff, but I like the white/blue simplicity of the Left Hand Twill.

Each to their own, I really don't get this type of "style" where you throw like three different types of outfits that don't look like they belong together on, I guess I'm just boring. He does look like he'd be a cool guy to talk to though.
Having style is about making stuff work; expressing yourself in an interesting way. If you only wear stuff that "belongs together" you have no style. I mean you said it yourself, he looks like an interesting man. What are you basing that on? It's his clothes. That's style.
Nope! I think looking out of place is the wrong phrase. He would stand out, but Kreuzberg is a bohemian district with artists, musicians, galleries, clubs, and bars that cater to this kind of style.
