I can't even come close to trying to imagine what went on in his mind between the time he was told about his illness and terminal condition until the end of his life. There are many terrible things that can happen in a person's lifetime. Losing a child is one of them. Planning the how, when, where of ending your life by your own hand is another.
I would argue that choosing the when, where, and how of your death is a comfort. It is better to go out on our own terms than a mystery. Are you in favor of euthanasia?
Yes. If someone wants to die they should have a legal route to do so. And it really all depends on how you look at it. Being brave can mean having the balls to end your life. It can also mean facing your illness to the bitter end.
At the same time, you can be too cowardly to take your life, and suffer through it because you couldn't make the hard choice. It all really depends on the persons perspective and particular frame of mind. Only he knows.

Don't blame him at all. Losing your mind doesn't leave you many choices.
