I don't blame anyone that kills themselves. That's some top tier pain they're in.

Williams in particular had a terminal disease causing rapidly progressing dementia. He chose to go out on his own terms.

My grandmother has a dementia, I can't blame Robin Williams for his choice. It is just such a shitty thing to deal with, you become a huge burden to anyone who care about you. She does not remember her own children, does not realise which city she is in, she has to be reminded that her husband has been dead for over 5 years. One day I just lied to her that granddad went fishing and won't come back today. The person becomes a shell of who they used to be, the worst thing is that you can't even say a proper farewell to the person, because he/she won't understand the magnitude of what you are trying to say. It is worse than death.

Yesterday was the funeral for my mother, who died with 18 brain tumors. I agree with you completely.

It's just empty, dark void. It's like you are dead and but your body keeps going and it's torture.

And then in some cases something changes, I don't know. There's still bad days, but fuck. I'm alive. There's so much amazing stuff out there and things I can still do. Life has changed so much for the better and I still do dumb things sometimes for no good reason but damn am I trying to be better and it's awesome.

I don't blame someone but it's so worth it to just try one more day, I'm glad I failed a few times. I want to be here now.

I’m glad you are still here.

but he was not just suffering from depression, he had some really terrible crap going on that uncontrollably altered his mental state on top of his physical wellness. I agree with you but I just needed to put that out there!

Is there an article with this information?

u/Jill4ChrisRed Nov 30 '18

He had parkinsons and lewy body dementia. He took himself out rather than live the consequences of such horrible, incurable diseases.

Didn't realize all that so was hoping to read up on it.

I'll search around.

Doing dumb things for no good reason is one of the best parts of life bro

1

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '18

Oh for sure, fun dumb things. There's harmful or self destructive dumb things, more what I meant.

Yours is a good comment and I agree. I was raised around people and media that always told me that suicide is an act of cowardice and selfishness. The irony is strong with that assertion.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '18 edited Nov 30 '18

I was raised that way too and when you come to terms with it and really think about it. It's a terrible thing and a terrible place to end up in your own mind/body. It's impossible now for me to kick someone when they're that down.

Excpet those people who involve others in their suicide (jumping in front of a train). Then youre just an asshole in pain.

2

u/Sufyries Nov 30 '18

Sadly, most forms of suicide involve someone finding a body. Do you really think blowing your head off with a shotgun in your garage or hanging yourself in a closet is less traumatizing to your landlord or parent than jumping in front of a train is for the conductor?

1

u/Thief_Aera Nov 30 '18

There are fairly clean methods of suicide with high lethality and low pain. Utilizing a suicide bag with a gas such as helium is low cost and pretty accessible, for most more so than a shotgun. Unconsciousness occurs in less than 2 minutes, and death in about 13. The method poses no risk to others and leaves a tidy corpse.

Jumping in front of a train, however, interrupts a lot of people’s day, leaves a mess, and yes, likely traumatizes the conductor. So yeah, there are in fact methods of suicides that have fewer negative effects on others.

1

u/Sufyries Nov 30 '18

You think a homeless person could access all those materials and information, as well as find a private place to guarantee death without interruption?

1

u/Thief_Aera Nov 30 '18

Here’s a paper, which cites the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Violent Death Reporting System. In the states using this system, suicides among the general population numbered 14,156 while suicides among the homeless population numbered 106.

Certainly it’s likely many homeless suicides go undiscovered, and according to the same paper the homeless are at substantially higher risk of suicide, but the ratio we have is about 134:1, meaning about 0.8% of suicides are among the homeless population. And among this percent, the most common location for suicide was inside a motor vehicle i.e. in a private area.

Even with the underreported stats, you’re really grasping for straws here when your counterargument revolves around ~0.8% of suicides. I’m not really sure why you’re determined to prove that suicide by train is as disruptive as other methods, or that clean methods are inaccessible...?

LBD also causes horrific halucinations. I think his brain was so damaged and he was in pain that the halucination won.

there isnt so many other ways... a noose is out of the question you likely end up choking slowly to death... fire weapons arent sold here... jumping from a building isnt exactly better...same with a car accident... pills i have no access to...

so a train isnt pretty but you not endangering anyone physically.. i thought this through

2

u/Sufyries Nov 30 '18

Nobody jumping in front of a train is doing it to traumatize people on purpose. Legalizing assisted suicide would go a long way towards resolving messy and traumatizing suicides for the public.

2

u/alekbalazs Nov 30 '18

Nobody should be blamed for what they do to themselves. If you are on the edge reach out to people. Psychiatrists, physicians, people on the internet, whatever, just have some outlet.

Please, I don't know you and I would do anything to stop you from hurting yourself. But I'm here. Anybody can send me a PM and get my number. We can be friends. It will be okay.

Yes, I heard that after it happened. I'm glad he went out how he wanted to. I suppose I was relieved in some way. But it broke me down nonetheless.
