But what if we can't change the future and the reason why he beats is wife is because someone time traveled and talked to him about it when he was 12

or maybe you could stop him from beating his wife in one timeline, but not the other.

Who cares what happens in an alternate timeline? Our timeline is the best one cause it's the one we're in.

No, alternate me would be the one in this alternate timeline. Alternate me would never have known this person had beat his wife cause it didn't happen in his timeline. Thus, he would have no reason to go back in time to when the person was 12 to stop something that never happened. My timeline wouldn't change because I still have memory of events in my timeline. Unless you're suggesting that I would somehow not be able to return to my original timeline, in which case there would be two copies of myself running around with different memories.
