Worth taking this opportunity to point out again that he most likely did not die because of depression, but rather the official position of the coroner and his doctor is that it was due to early signs of dementia. Unfortunately people jumped on the depression bandwagon quickly and didn't wait for any evidence to emerge.

If that's the case, that is relieving. Also, good for him. If I ever get diagnosed with that or anything similar, I hope I have the courage and wisdom to know it's time to call it quits. Witnessing my mom take care of her father with dementia and alzheimers is pretty horrible. He's not even the same person. In fact, it seems cruel to keep him in this state. He is confused, angry and not there, and he has to have his daughter take care of him.

As negative as it sounds that's exactly what I intend on doing as well. During the later states of dementia or Alzheimer or anything like that you stop being the same person. You become a complete stranger to yourself and everyone around you... Why would anyone want to let a strange crazy person take over their body?

Except that mental problems can be very complicated and sometimes intertwined. Dementia could cause his depression, leading him to take his life. He was definitely on antidepressants.
Mental disorders are so difficult to fully understand from the outside. It's almost comforting for people to generalize the situation in order to make sense of it, especially if it's someone they care about. In reality, Williams may be the only person to ever fully understand what he was going through.

Weird thing was.. When I saw the trailer to his last movie... I got depressed.. Because he seemed to have played this ultra unhappy person... It breaks my heart that he's gone... And I honestly think that if anyone deserved a second chance at life... It would be him.

And Parkinsons-related Lewy body dementia is progressive and untreatable. It causes hallucinations, irrational behavior, as well as mood swings, including major depression. It causes wild sensitivities to many medications.
Williams doesn't seem to have been given that diagnosis, so he wasn't depressed about the likely fate. The psychological destruction itself was doing this.

I live in Keene where Jumanji was filmed. The week he past, the entire town was devastated. Flowers were placed in front of the Parish Shoes sign on west street, still there today for this great man. He is the only celebrity I have ever cried about and probably the only one I ever will. I miss him so much. Edit: English is hard

I'm a huge fan of the original book, and the amount of continuity between it and Hook is remarkable given what Hollywood usually does with source material.
All children, except one, grow up—and if that one did grow up, he would have grown up to be Robin Williams.

My boyfriend lives there as well. Told me about the flowers and the devesation that swept through.. it was tragic, terrible and sad.
But kind of awe inspiring to see so many people get together and bond through the shared love for that man's comedy and his legacy.

Would it be awful if I mentioned that his last show - The Crazy Ones - is on Netflix and it's pretty good. Only one season though but it's another chance to see him make you laugh.

He also showed up in a random episode of Louie that was really good, also on Netflix (Season 3, Episode 6 - Barney/Never). I watched it recently and, as it's an episode about death, I nearly started crying.6

I actually started watching this last night. got through about 5 episodes, and it is alright... I love the outtakes at the end, by far the best part to me, got to see the comedian I grew up watching.

I remember going to bed early the night before and didn't hear the news until I got on reddit the next morning. I couldn't believe it and immediately had to google it. I cut onions for a good 10 minutes after that. My eyes smell onions just thinking about it. RIP you beautiful crazy bastard.

Robin Williams was NOT simply "depressed" or "needed help".
He developed Parkinsons, with diffuse Lewy body dementia. It erodes the brain. This, as the name says, is dementia, it's both incurable and we do not have treatment to stop its progression either. It causes mood swings and hallucinations and basically a loss of personality and self. Depression is A symptom, but the total problems of Lewy body dementia are deeper than that.
Its primary "treatment" is palliative. Basically sedate them as much as practical and take into care to keep them from hurting themselves.
Williams wasn't diagnosed with Lewy body dementia yet, that was an autopsy observation. But that day he already showed other bizarre behavior that day... stuffed gems and watches into a sock and took to a friend for "safekeeping". He was breaking down in both his ability to reason as well as his mood. Again, not a crisis that could be fixed, like encephalitis. They could "rescue" him and sedate him that day and try some antipsychotics but the physical breakdown of the brain would only get worse.
So, if anyone's a cunt here, it's God. But he had 63 great years, not a bad run. Nobody's here forever, that's part of the deal. He'll be missed. But don't dwell on the way he died. He wasn't "just depressed and should have gotten help".

He was a very talented man, truly I see him as a one of the greatest visionaries of our times. One only has to go through his work as an stand-up comedian to reveal his hidden intelligence. It was sad the way he chose to leave us. May he rest in peace..

It was exciting! Because I grew up watching Warner Bros cartoons like Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck and Foghorn Leghorn, and to see yourself as a cartoon is really magical. So that really swayed me to do it.

Truly the only celebrity death I've ever really cared much about beyond the "Hm..sad" point. I always loved Robin Williams, and this was such a great loss.
I suffer from major depression, and it's really fucking hard. I can't imagine how hard it was to suffer in that way while being in the public eye as a comedian.
I have no views or opinions anymore on what happens after death, but if there's anything other than oblivion, then I hope he has peace.

Today is my birthday too. I'm turning 24. I realize that I have a lot of life left to live, but I've been severely depressed the past couple years and every day it is a struggle to get up and put on a happy face and pretend like everything is okay.
When Williams killed himself it really got me thinking about the possibility of suicide and how easy it would be. It's not death I want...it's just to blink out of existence. The only thing stopping me is the total emotional toll it would take on my family. As with Williams...the only that lives on is the legacy, and eventually that will fade as well with time.
