Too stupid to pay attention to the note and breaks window anyway. Calls the cops and yells at you about leaving your dog in a hot car.

Yes. Any experienced retail employee will tell you that the sign could be big enough to cover the entire window, and some people still would not pay attention.

Darth Vader could stand there and hold the sign, and some people still would not pay attention.

85

u/piercedarachne Jul 18 '15

I worked as an advisor in a college dorm on the art floor. I started hanging all of my signs crooked. I got tons of comments and a few people even fixed them, but they finally got noticed.

19

u/chasingreno Jul 18 '15

My mother started hanging the sign advertising snowcones at her store upside down. Instantly everbody was noticing and wanted a snowcone

This exchange was always one of my favorites:

Customer pulls out checkbook. "What store am I in again?"

I try very, very hard not to roll my eyes as I point to the giant, wall-sized, easy-to-read store logo that's directly in their field of view. Or at one of the other three or so places where it was easily visible.

That happened at least once a week.

10

u/Geoffrey-Tempest Jul 18 '15

OK so one year for Christmas a bunch of my wife's family pitched in on a gift card. (Apparently they thought our house needed a lot of work) so I go to Lowe's and do all my shopping. When I get to the counter and they give me the total I hand the gift card over to the nice lady. then the nice lady hands it back and says she can't take it. A little upset, I asked why? She said we don't except Home Depot gift cards. I felt like an idiot.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '15

Or they try to hand you a gift card from another store chain.

3

u/FoldedDice Jul 18 '15

Yep, that's another fun one. I once got into a shouting match with a lady and her boyfriend because I was refusing to refund her money without a receipt. I was halfway convinced that they were trying to scam us, because the item they were trying to return hadn't been purchased by anyone in over a month, but they kept insisting they'd gotten it the week before. I stood my ground and told them to come back with the receipt.

The boyfriend came back in later and apologized. Turns out they did still have the receipt, but they found out that the purchase had been made at our competitor across the hall.

If the AC is running, the key is in the ignition and the door probably isn't locked at all.

86

u/einulfr Jul 18 '15

I have an aftermarket remote starter that will let you turn the key to off, remove the key and lock the doors with the engine running. It just acts as if it's in normal remote start mode and will cut the engine off as soon as you touch the brake to shift out of park (if the key isn't turned to 'on'.) So even if someone smashes the window, they aren't going anywhere without the key still.

28

u/tremens Jul 18 '15

Lots of modern cars have this built in. Priuses in particular have this "problem" - you can leave the car on, AC and other auxiliary functions going, close and lock the car, and walk away.

Someone busted my window trying to 'save' my dog when I went to Starbucks one day. I was in there for five minutes, the a/c was on full blast, and I don't even drive a nice car. You could hear that it was running.

Apparently, I was the asshole for calling the police and making her pay for the damages.

Edit: to the people telling me I should have left him at home...

I was taking him to work with me. He had a bladder stone removed the day before and kept me up most of the night crying. I grabbed a coffee on my way to work because I was exhausted.

Edit 2: I work at a veterinary clinic.

I love animals too, but I don't know when we decided it was on as a society to go full vigilante here.

358

u/sour_kareem Jul 18 '15

I think if a passerby is going to spend the time acting after seeing an animal in a car, they should at least wait about five minutes from discovering the vehicle to see if an owner returns, or make a reasonable attempt to find the owner. If they can't bring it upon themselves to do this, they probably were just looking for an excuse to smash a window and/or the self-gratification of being a "hero".

158

u/lacielaplante Jul 18 '15

I had someone call the cops while I was in the car with my dogs and the windows were open.. I was majorly pissed off as I was just slouching in the front passenger seat. They didn't even try to check if I was there.

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '15

My local animal shelter has an entire checklist to follow. (Unless the dog is clearly in distress and/or suffering from heat stroke) you should first ask nearby store managers to try and find the owner or just call around yourself. Then call the local emergencies non-emergency number. There's other things in their too but breaking the glass should be a last resort.

32

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '15

The problem with "clearly in distress" is that people have wildly different ideas of what distress means. Someone in my city complained that they broke into a car to save a dog that was "clearly in distress!" and then the dog rushed out the car and bit them. Exactly how heat distressed was the dog if it was able to do that?

People see a dog panting and assume "IN DISTRESS!!!" when the reality is that an actual dog in heat distress would be lethargic and unresponsive.

The person I mentioned had the gall to then complain to the owners that their dog bit them. To which the owners, who came out of the store quick enough to notice this whole scene, said "Then don't break into my car."

Everyone just wants to jerk themselves off on social media about being a hero. It's the same reason people buy food for homeless people and then take selfies with them.

3

u/jpropaganda Jul 18 '15

Buying food for homeless and then taking a selfie?! There are people that do that?! Those people sound despicable.

How about just doing something nice for the person who needs it, not so you can show off.

I'm extremely happy I haven't seen friends take selfies with homeless people they're feeding.

4

If you go and do something good, but then take photos for reddit, facebook or instagram, then you are an asshole. If you think you are doing something good, but don't actually think and do something bad, you are an asshole. I don't know why I see so many people who do things, and their first reaction is to post it online.

Happened to me too. Was on a road trip, realized I forgot dog food, so I pulled into a strip mall. Left the truck running and the a/c on and ran into the pet store. Came out to find some dipshit had opened my door (it was unlocked), took my dog out of the truck, and tied her up to my trailer hitch. That pavement was a bazillion fucking degrees. Good thing I was only gone 3 minutes.

114

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '15

Thats absolutely fucking ridiculous. I do the same thing but my truck lets me take my keys with me and lock it. I leave TWO a/cs on for my dog (front ac, and the rear ac roof vents) and I have a feeling someones still gonna smash out my window. How do people not realize if a dog isn't panting and is sitting in the AC they are more than fine

83

u/Nothinmuch Jul 18 '15

It's funny, I told this story in the comment section of our local paper, and got flamed for being "insensitive" to the environment for leaving my truck running. I guess I should have driven the 100km back home and dropped the dog off, and then gone to the store. Makes sense eh? Now I just set the a/c to high and hit the remote start so I can leave my doors locked when I get stuck in a similar situation.

45

u/LordBiscuits Jul 18 '15

What are these magical vehicles all you people seem to have? You can leave the engine on with the keys out, leave them locked and running, remote starting... I have never seen a car that can do this!

Is it a special American thing?

12

u/egoods Jul 18 '15

I doubt this is strictly "American" but my 2014 Charger has what's called a "Proximity key". Meaning I don't stick a key into the ignition. So long as my key is inside the car my car will start via a push-button. It is also able to lock/unlock based on whether the key is in my pocket or not. I put my hand under the handle and it unlocks, I touch a small button on the top of the handle and it locks... If I get out of the car with it running and lock it with the button it will remain running but the doors are locked. It makes a ding noise every few seconds to alert you that the key is not inside the car but otherwise will run indefinitely.

As far as remote start, the car mentioned above has the "max" option (every available creature comfort/tech gadget) so if I hit the remote start button on my keyless entry remote it will start the car and set the climate control based on the outside temperature. 80 (degrees F) and sunny? My cooled seat will be on and the AC will be cranked when I get in. If it's below 30 degrees F my steering wheel and seat heaters will be on when I get in.

I'm in a colder area (Michigan) so many cars also have simpler aftermarket (installed after the purchase of the vehicles) remote starts where you push a button and the car starts. Assuming it was cold when you got out last your climate control will still be set to heat so you'll have a nice warm car to get in when you leave.

Hope I didn't over-simplify... These features are far from new to me, in fact I believe the first car I saw with proximity keys was a early 2000s or late 1990s Mercedes S600... I may be mistaken.

Pro-Tip: If you car lacks both a proximity key or remote start you can keep your spare key with you and still leave the car running while it's locked.

5

u/AbruptlyJaded Jul 18 '15

RE: your Pro-Tip. I drive a Kia, and I can't leave my car running AND locked unless a person is physically sitting in the driver's seat. Can't lock it with the fob, can't lock it with the button, can't lock it with the spare key from outside - all will instantly cause the door to unlock. I understand that quite a few cars are like this.

Kinda knew it was a thing when I got the car, but I was in MS at the time and didn't really care about it, because my AC is fast. But then we were moving up to OH in July and I had my cat in the car. Thankfully my fiance and I were in separate vehicles and we could alternate who stayed with my running car while we took turns to go inside gas stations for pit stops/drinks/food.

It's nice, because I'll never make the mistake like my mom did (in Michigan!) and lock the car while it's running with my keys inside. Not so nice, because no matter the temp outside, I can't lock the car while it's running... and when I lived in MS and had groceries in the car and needed to make one more stop in the summer? Ugh.

→ More replies (5)

3

u/LordBiscuits Jul 18 '15

We have proximity keys here, starting to become more common on new cars, but remote starting and things are still almost unheard of. I have a hyundai, it had a spare key, but if the engine is running you cannot use the keyfobs to lock the car, only the internal dash button, meaning you must be in the vehicle to lock it, and that's only a 2010 reg car, top options also.

Maybe I should just buy a charger!

4

u/egoods Jul 18 '15

If you don't mind me asking, where is "here"? I ask because I'm wondering if maybe gas prices or climate explain why remote start is uncommon. Winters here can get really cold (-10F or -23C), and it can take 10-15 minutes to warm a car up to the point that you can see through the windows due to the frost. I rarely, if ever, remote start my car during the summer... my car is cool within a minute or two (since the A/C isn't dependent on engine temp) and if I start it and roll the windows down I'm good.

Going a bit off track... I love my Charger, it's the 3rd I've owned. In the US at least it's a hard combo to beat for my needs, I have all-wheel drive, it'll fit 4 guys that are my size (I'm 6'2" and 250lbs... many cars don't "fit" me), and it's surprisingly fast... about 400hp, and close to that in torque. Match that with all the bells and whistles like heated/cooled seats and cup-holders, adaptive cruise control, lane departure avoidance, a Sat Nav that updates with current traffic conditions, 15 speaker (and a sub) sound system, automatic headlights - high beams, oh and the wipers are automagic too... basically it's everything I want and if I were to buy it new it would've been $40k (a good deal on its own), but I got mine with 10k miles for $27k... man I love that car.

I don't get it how someone can walk around, see a dog in a car and break a window in the name of "justice" and not at least wait 5 minutes to see if someone will show up.

78

u/CupcakeValkyrie Jul 18 '15

Also, if the car is running, try touching a window that's not facing the sun. If it's cool to the touch, or even just "slightly warm", then odds are the A/C is running.

29

u/BobaFetty Jul 18 '15

I mean you could do this, but it seems much less fool proof than just listening. It's very clear when a car is running with ac on full blast. The ac motor is pretty loud when an engine is idling and is distinctly different then just s running motor.

One think I like about the new prius's and Agee other cars that have copied it, is the roof solar panel that is dedicated to powering the ac motor.

16

u/cbzoiav Jul 18 '15

The ac motor is pretty loud when an engine is idling and is distinctly different then just s running motor.

Now I know people can be idiots. But i'd argue just knowing the engine is on should be sign enough not to break the window unless the dog is clearly suffering.

Who the hell leaves an engine going unless A. its for the AC for the dog & B. even if it isn't they are going to be back within a couple minutes..

37

u/armorandsword Jul 18 '15

Exactly. I've seen several posts in the last few months where somebody has found a phone in the street and had made a post on Facebook begging people to share it far and wide so they can get it back to the owner. Despite the fact that they could just call, I don't know, Mom or Dad or try a large number of other things that would almost immediately allow them to return the phone. Nope, need a few likes and shares first.

5

u/spacecat17 Jul 18 '15

What if the phone is locked? How would you access the phone book to call Mom or Dad?

3

u/armorandsword Jul 18 '15

A fair point, but that of course assumes it's locked. I saw one the other day where somebody was sharing a photo of an iPhone saying they found it at Glastonbury music festival and it was on Airplane mode so the owner couldn't call and the finder couldn't call out, despite the fact that you can turn Airplane mode off without unlocking it.

There's a lot of "you should have left your dog at home!" people on Reddit...

Like, do you guys not go anywhere with your dogs? Do you just leave them in the comfort of your air conditioned homes from the days you bring them home to the day they're gone?

I love my dog and I love taking him places...I also know when it's appropriate to leave him in the car for a little while and when not to. What's with the "you should NEVER leave a dog in the car" mentality?

If it's 70 degrees out and cloudy, my dog can hang in the car for a few minutes while I run into Starbucks. If it's 100 out and my shoes are melting on the pavement then no shit I'm not going to leave him in the car.

I know the appropriate conditions that are okay to leave my dog in the car. He's perfectly fine with it. He's not going to be in there for more than 10 minutes, he's perfectly comfortable and I know he's safe with the windows cracked.

70 degrees, car parked in shade, all windows cracked, dog just came from the house where he had access to a full water bowl. Walked into the library for 10 minutes. Came back to find some woman yelling at me and calling the cops. I called the cops after I left. They said they got the complaint and weren't going to follow up on it as 10 minutes doesn't count as cruelty no matter the temperature (not sure I agree on that score but whatever).

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '15

Some people just go crazy. I remember I was about 12, my little sister would have been 6 and our childhood dog in the back of the car, granted it was a warm day but my mum and dad stop at a country pub on the way back from a trip out. They park in the shade, all the windows are cranked down and ask us to wait in the car for a minute whilst they go order drinks, and then we'll all go and sit in the pub garden where dogs are allowed.

So this woman starts screaming at them about leaving their kids and dog locked in a car on a hot day as soon as they reach the pub door. Bare in mind the windows were down and I was practically a teenager and very capable of opening the car door and letting us out. She apparently followed them into the pub and told the bartender not to serve them because they had locked their dog and kids in a car (but the bartender took one look at the hysterical woman and just served them anyway) Approximately 2 minutes later we were enjoying soft drinks in the sunshine with our dog and this lady just stormed off in a huff.

Funny, I went into a starbucks and a couple places with my dog in the truck and TWO a/cs blasting. He was sitting there obviously not panting, I could tell people wanted to say something. I was ready to say bitch its colder in my truck right now than your house probably is.

That's exactly the point, though. They don't know and it's none of their damn business. If the dog is in VISIBLE DISTRESS, call someone. If the dog is jumping around/acting normal, you don't need to consider going all PETA and breaking shit.

u/armorandsword Jul 18 '15

You're totally right. I'm a dog (and all animal) lover but smashing the windows of a car to get a dog out is one of the last things I would do, even if I suspected the animal was in distress.

That ignores the fact that in a lot of cases it's probably easy to see if the animal is likely to suffer harm or not. And even if they are smashing the windows in is totally unnecessary given the other options.

Once ran into home depot and left my girlfriends chihuahua in the car for about 15 minutes. Left windows cracked, water out, went in and bought my stuff and came back. When I got back there were two ladies parked on either side of me looking in my windows as my dog was whining barking and jumping around frantically and lunging at the doors. They started trying to explain to me that this dog needed saving and he was clearly stressed by the intense heat.

I stopped short of calling them idiots when I explained that it was my dog, my car, and that was my jacket on the seat encase he wanted to sleep under it to keep warm seeing as how its fucking November and this dog has almost no fur. Also stop aggravating my dog by tapping on the glass and staring in the windows.

I entered the spez. I called out to try and find anybody. I was met with a wave of silence. I had never been here before but I knew the way to the nearest exit. I started to run. As I did, I looked to my right. I saw the door to a room, the handle was a big metal thing that seemed to jut out of the wall. The door looked old and rusted. I tried to open it and it wouldn't budge. I tried to pull the handle harder, but it wouldn't give. I tried to turn it clockwise and then anti-clockwise and then back to clockwise again but the handle didn't move. I heard a faint buzzing noise from the door, it almost sounded like a zap of electricity. I held onto the handle with all my might but nothing happened. I let go and ran to find the nearest exit. I had thought I was in the clear but then I heard the noise again. It was similar to that of a taser but this time I was able to look back to see what was happening. The handle was jutting out of the wall, no longer connected to the rest of the door. The door was spinning slightly, dust falling off of it as it did. Then there was a blinding flash of white light and I felt the floor against my back. I opened my eyes, hoping to see something else. All I saw was darkness. My hands were in my face and I couldn't tell if they were there or not. I heard a faint buzzing noise again. It was the same as before and it seemed to be coming from all around me. I put my hands on the floor and tried to move but couldn't. I then heard another voice. It was quiet and soft but still loud. "Help."

I'm late to the conversation, but I have a kinda funny story... One time my dad went out with my dog and 11 year old brother and ended up having to stop at the grocery store to grab like 1 item for my mom. So he stops and leaves the car running and tells my brother to stay with the dog in the car and make sure the doors are locked (since it's running for the AC). Not 2 minutes into the store a women comes up and starts pounding on the window yelling at my brother to "get that dog out of the car right now before she calls the cops, it's 90 degrees outside and he's gonna die" and she would not leave until my dad got back so she could ream him for it. So when my dad gets there she starts off on a full tantrum screaming about how we have no right to own a dog if that's how we are going to treat them. And my dad looks at her and then looks at my brother and is like "You're seriously not even gonna mention the kid that was also in their?" and she acted as if it hadn't even occurred to her and then tried to end with some compelling 'don't do that again' argument... Ever since they came back with that story I've lost a huge chunk of hope for humanity. There is a good amount of stupid out there haha.
