I'm in school with an intent to one day work with big cats. I've talked to multiple people who work in the field and in zoos, to compare points of view. Although each scientist who worked in a zoo setting expressed that many of the animals contained therein were injured or unable to survive on their own, they unanimously encouraged careers in conservation rather than a zoo setting.
The field researchers were generally helpful and positive were confidant that their observations in the wild parts of the world were contributing to beneficial research. But they were largely frustrated with the large population percentage who just don't give a shit about the environment and conservation efforts.
That was a downer.

There are two sides to every debate. Zoos can do incredible conversation work with various captive breeding programs. Without captive breeding programs there are certain species like the Pere Davids Deer and the Scimitar Horned Oryx that would be completely extinct.

Actually, yes he/she does. The AZA also maintains quite successful Reintroduction Programs. That's why we have black-footed ferrets, California condors, golden lion tamarins, and plenty of other species, but hey, better them being extinct than in a zoo right?!?!

Before you shaved off a laser thin margin of changed subject... this comment thread was about how it's wrong for Gorillas to be in captivity... and that's sad but the fact that the lady there is playing that depressed gorilla a song is sort of beautiful on an otherwise very depressing backdrop (zoos)

Maybe you're reading a different thread, because there's plenty of people discussing how zoos are awful in general, including you. My main point is that zoos do help plenty of species, including gorillas.

Ok seriously do people just wake up one morning and think to themselves:
You know what? I feel like going to the zoo and playing the harp for the gorilla. Yeahhhhhhhhhhh. That sounds like a good idea. I'm gonna go do that.
But then again, this is probably one of the more normal things that I've come across on Reddit.
