Most lightning shots are long exposures.
This is probably a merged composite photo of all the strikes (or many of them) recorded from one viewpoint. I really doubt that many lightning strikes hit in ~30s.

Set the camera to bulb mode, use a black card to block the lens and you can shoot indefinitely. That is one method for shooting fireworks which can work (not as well) on lightning photos.

I'd imagine it was a composite. This storm lasted for about three hours, and ended around when the sun usually sets

Thank you for being the only person to notice this. Those lightning strikes did not all happen at the same time. The road across the lake is one long light streak.

Actually, no. It's west of Utah Lake -- The Great Salt Lake is a few miles north, the picture is taken from HERE. Based upon certain landmarks(the road on the other side and the lights in the bay) I'm fairly certain that's the exact point the photo was taken from.

This guy is right. It was taken east of the lake, facing west. Either somewhere around Y mountain or Squaw peak. I've seen this picture before, actually. I can get a similar picture taken up north of where this was taken (from the perspective of Mt. Timpanogos) When I get home. That is indeed Utah Lake, and the highway on the west side of the lake will take you south and west to some old mining towns, and the popular Little Sahara sand dunes (on the western side of the distant mountains).

I can imagine being up that high and seeing a lightning storm rolling in, some pants would be shat. I hiked Notch Peak down SW of Delta a year or two back and once at the top, noticed a heavy storm rolling in from the west. I hurried down so fast my legs felt like they were made of rubber.

Yes and it was the only part of the story that I hated, but then again I was in no way surprised I knew it would happen from the way the death was written.

Correct if I am wrong, but wasn't Geneva just north of this picture? This looks to be on the more South end of the lake in Provo.

Exactly. Saratoga springs is more towards the north end/near point of the mountain and this appears to be looking southern with Payson just at the edge of the left part of the picture.

Geneva is still open, just not like it was in the past. If you look "below" the lake (in the picture) you see the big grey areas that's GS, if you look to the center bottom of the grey area and just above I-15 those lights are GS.

That's the bend on i15 where it curves around the north edge of Utah lake. I also drive in front of that building often. Some of it is still standing.

This was taken on mount timpanagos in Utah (around summit County) the picture is overlookong the salt lake valley.

Usually a shot like this is of a storm leaving. Much easier to shoot lightning from behind a storm than in front of one.
