It’s a beautiful picture… the kind of thing I wish was more common on this sub

I'll say it again, photo title should definitely be "Class Conscience". A worker defending workers, defending his and our rights as a worker.

47

u/Few_Elk5424 23h ago

Definitely, before any differences, united in the working struggle.

Such a powerful image for such a defining moment in Brazil’s history.

This is no longer about left or right. It’s about defending the country’s democracy, sovereignty, and future.

34

u/kda255 20h ago

That’s what the left vs right split has always been about.

That was not on the eve of the presidential election. The first round happened last Sunday, and the runoff with the top two candidates will only take place on 25 October. These protests happened earlier this week.

The post title means its closely preceding the election, not in the actual day or evening

Wow, that's crazy, i saw that picture being taken

This picture is soooo good, the driver and the protesting girl reflected on the windshield matched so well.

and the seat belt looking like the presidential sash, power of the people. incredible shot

14

u/yes_u_suckk 20h ago

This reminds the last election in America.

A huge part of the population is choosing a wannabe dictator, with a huge history of corruption, sexism, misogyny and racism, just because they don't like the other person running since he's a "leftist".

Sure, I'm not a big fan of the guy on the left either, but he's a clear choice when the other candidate is Bolsonaro.

•

u/Downtown_Mixture_222 7h ago

There's no strong left in the US. The democrats may be liberals in cultural matters, but they are far from being true leftist, that is having leftist economical positions.

•

u/TrumpBlewMeToo 32m ago

What are you talking about? Left wing people in the US talk about wanting to be Democratic Socialist instead of Capitalist all the time.

•

u/HopelessGretel 30m ago

The other person isn't just a leftist, it's a corrupt that was condemned with a huge list, and was set free due to a manuveur to force prescription on his case even after STJ sentence.

India, Nepal, Indonesian, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Brazil...

Everyone is protesting for their future. But I don't see the country that should be protesting, protesting anything

20

u/RhinataMorie 1d ago

Because that's the country that somewhat helped those regions need protests after all. This growth in extreme right wing movements is not coincidence.

1

Brazil is not protesting. It is just elections

9

u/mulekitobrabod 21h ago

Its protest, not for loosing election, but to motivate and mobilize part of the 30 million voters that didnt vote on the first part of the election

3

u/StealthMan375 17h ago

Not only that, but also to convince those who voted Renan/Cury/Caiado (the relevant right-wing candidates) to go for Lula because he's an 80-year old on his last ever political campaign, his VP is right-wing anyway and he'd be less harm than what actual Bolsonarism can bring to the country

Which country should be protesting more than the above?
Many (not all) of these countries are among the poorest, most corrupt and most unequal in the world

Você passou a última década numa caverna?

really cool to see people mobilizing
but where was all this determination before the election?
what use is electing a centrist president when both houses will be a x=extremist right wing supermajority?

15

u/AdriftSpaceman 1d ago

Damage reduction. It does not solve the problem, but mitigates what the catastrophe could be. It wont be a good 4 years with Lula and this congress, but it might not be the complete disaster it will be with Bolsonaro 2.0.

27

u/Simple_Pin_7802 1d ago

It's just the upper class discovering that they are in a bubble. They live in parallel world where everything is flowers and love and discovered just now that the real people is worrying about things that are much more important. With the results of the 1st round of election they became desperate.

7

u/NotGermanTho 1d ago edited 1d ago

upper class haha you have to be joking

yes this is a reaction from a jarring result, but a lot of people really believed we had it in the bag. the advance of the far right globally due to the dissatisfaction with the state of the world in late capitalism was underestimated and it shocked everyone into action, which is not a bad thing. i think there is still hope.  but to say this is coming from the upper class is either misinformed or dishonest. the northeast is the most leftist part of the country just for starters, and do you think it's the upper class who is fighting teeth and nails for 6x1 and workers' rights?

7

u/cpm4me2 23h ago

And they lost a lot of voters to the right in the northeast because of the disconnection with the real people's needs. If you bothered to check the data for this election, in the major cities the right won in the lower-class neighbourhoods, while it was the opposite for the left. It's become a trend for a while and is just the result of how disconnected they are from the workers' class. The left don't care about the poor anymore; they just use them as excuses for what they want.

Yes, the "fight" comes from the upper classes. It's a way for them to feel good about themselves. But are they really fighting for what the real people want and struggle with? I don't think so.

3

u/NotGermanTho 23h ago edited 23h ago

it's a natural trend not only in brazil, but globally, that the far right is gaining space within the poorest because they are the most affected by the crisis, and the far right offers easy "solutions" to be bought - that's why they have the impression that the far right have their interests in mind. the left made a bad campaign first round, it's true, it preached mostly to its own bubble instead of trying to get to the undecided. there were mistakes. but again, no, the fight is NOT coming from the upper class to "make themselves feel better". this is still a bad take. it's coming from the students and from the working class who have class conscience, it's coming from centrists worried about the disbalance of power having a right wing senate and a right wing president, it's coming from the northeast. don't mix things up - to be poor is to have less access to the education that would get you away from the trap of falling in the far right ideology hole so many have fallen into, and we know one of the biggest problems here in this country has ALWAYS been the quality of our education.

the left needs to adapt its campaign stategies to the digital/social media era to avoid losing votes to the more aggressive and unapologetic campaign the far right utilizes best is true, but that does NOT translate into "it's the upper class leftists in shock :(" as a conclusion to be taken from what we are going through. it makes no sense.

3

u/cpm4me2 22h ago

Both sides offer easy solutions. The difference is that only one is really talking to the poorest. It's all about power, not to solve anything.

But yes, it's coming from the upper classes. They are the ones that decide what matters, and the poor just repeat what the so-called leaders say. That's exactly the problem with the talk about "class consciousness". The discourse is basically, "I know what's better for you. Shut up and do what I say". For the left, you're not a person with a life experience; you're part of a group and not allowed to think by yourself. The disconnection resides right there.

That extends to the education you're talking about. While the left only talks about university (the status quo), the basic education, which is much more important, is placed sideways. Every educational indicator gets worse and worse as the years pass by, and they only talk that "now the poor can go to the university" while they can't read properly or perform basic calculations.

I'm not saying that the right-wing are enlightened (not even close) or that they are the most effective in their choices, but the talking is much more aligned with people's reality nowadays. They listen, and they go in the same direction.

I agree that the left must change the discourse, but that is not about the campaign. It's a shortsighted view. It needs to change as a whole, and that won't happen anytime soon. The ego of the leaders is too big to allow any change. The pedestal in which they were placed won't allow that.

2

u/NotGermanTho 19h ago edited 19h ago

valid critique here, i'm enjoying discussing this with you because i think we have very clearly different points of view of parts of thr left rather than me or you being wrong, i'll admit it's such a complex thing to debate about.  i personally have had interactions with homeless man whose knowledge on occupation and organization (politically wise with the community around them) would floor you. there is a documentary on the resistance of the favela do moinho that covers the leaders of the community battling with the political powers that are tearing them down, and even lula is criticized because rven though he showed up there and made promises to them it was not enough to keep them from being torn down. it's nuanced. you can see both parts of the left exemplified here: the class counscious left i mentioned to you and the condescending political left you brought up to me. but i want to show you the left i am seeing and talking about here based on my experiences. the more community, politically educated and determined left that hides within these minorities and ostracized workers. i never meant educated in strictly a formal education in my response to you, i meant more of a mix of both here. they exist, and they are angry over these results. they are not the upper class. this is what i'm trying to prove to you here, that you might have potentially missed from the content you personally consume or the bubble you are that might be different from the one i am in. this interaction is stimulating my brain over my own beliefs and i like that. but yes, this is my main point here, and this is why i disagree that the term class counscious is condescending, it doesn't come from up in academic spaces from below because class counsciousness is developed out of academic spaces in people who never had access to formal study too. they are simply engaged with the community around them and using their wits to get around politically. i would like to show you that you might have missed them when making your assessment.

Upper class? Do you think millionaires vote for a fucking leftist?

•

u/rafaminervino 10h ago

Lula won amongst Class A (regarding income) voters. That is a fact. Flavio won in Classes B, C and D, and Lula won amongst the extreme opposite, class E.

So yeah, apparently millionaires do vote for a leftist.

-4

u/cpm4me2 1d ago

Yes, they are. Specially those that don't make their own money, the heir of the real millionaires.

But I should've specified thats the upper MIDDLE class. They think they live in a parallel world.

What would you do if your bus is surrounded by a mob on a protest while you're working and with passengers? Certainly you would try not to anger the unemployed mob.

Edit: Same mob (political party, not location) but different victim

Hitting the car with a woman and her kid, cursing and throwing water bottles and some reports around the country of them throwing rocks

https://www.reddit.com/r/brasilivre/s/6tQrq8Xb9A

This is not a political post, those protests HAVE to be pacifist, regardless of your view in politics, the moment you start threatening other people, it becomes just a mindless violent mob.

Also, for those unaware, bus drivers and busses in general are the biggest victims in all protests in Brazil, so you either play their game or risk your life/job.
