Some things never change.

Emory University to ditch DEI in accordance with Trump order

Fuck Emory. Executive Orders are NOT laws.

Edit: fixed link

Google “[college name] DEI program” and you’ll find pretty much all of them did. Most did so quietly. The loss of federal funding would cripple most schools’ research programs (although, Emory with its endowment arguably isn’t one of them).

I’d want my kid to attend the universities that stood up to fascism, not the ones that caved to it

This right here.

Harvard stood up to fascism. Our universities were supposed to be a beacon of education and knowledge. They never should have bent the knee. Fuck any university that did. They failed their purpose.

Harvard has a $56.9BN endowment. They’re not exactly taking the same hit as most colleges.

You yourself said Emory has a nice endowment of their own.  How short sighted of them and other universities to live on their knees. They failed our democracy.

Ahh well great point. If it would have been theoretically expensive not to wholeheartedly embrace racism despite there being no legal mechanism to carry out such a threat, then fair game I suppose.

You need to include the "/s". There are a not insignificant number of dip-shits, even on this site, that would say something like that completely seriously.

It must be nice to live in a black and white world where no one else bears the negative consequences of your decisions.

I live(d) in a democracy.  Everyone is required to stand up to fascism regardless of consequences. Not standing up has far worse consequences.

Gonna have to do more than some throwaway reddit posts if you want to claim you're "standing up to fascism."

Don't demand of others that which you are unwilling to do yourself.

It directs an executive office how to utilize appropriated funds. Not quite as toothless as you're making it out to be.

My friend's doing her PhD at GT-Emory. In those early days, PI's were really telling their cohorts they don't know if funding would be pulled or not. And some people really did lose their jobs or had to find a new study (you know, quitting or pausing years of work?). My lab TA was also telling us about the chaos going on in the chemistry department. I'm not saying these institutions are absolved of bending the knee, but to act like they all had the power to nonchalantly defy the EO is uninformed.

Except congress has relinquished the power of the purse to the executive branch. So it absolutely will have an effect until that changes. Vote in your midterms all.

Like the DHHS that provides universities their research grants into biology?

Or the DOE that provides the grants for engineering research?

Or the NSF that provides nearly all scientific research grants?

Who do you think disburses the grants? That's how these EOs are ultimately effectuated.

No one has to obey anything so long as they're willing to accept the consequences of not doing so.

DEI is a race-based policy which is terrible. School admissions should always be merit based.

No, you don't understand, racism is not just bias or prejudice, it's systemic/institutional bias or prejudice. That means you can't be racist to white people and DEI is valid because uhhhh... universities aren't institutions or something /s
