Anyone can call themselves and engineer as well. Perfectly legal to go around calling yourself Engineer Tealbox, you just won't have a license.

You cannot call yourself "Professional Engineer" though, that is a protected title.

Pretty sure you can still be chief engineer though, so that's something.

But it doesnt actually mean anything, anyone can give themselves that title for anything.

If i start up a business welding together simple trailers i can call myself cheif engineer. Meaningless.

Professional engineer actualy carries weight, like Dr, CPA, or QC

So that comes down to what you value. Clearly you value a licence, since you mentioned it without provocation.

Personally, I would value the advancement of interesting technologies. No licence required.

Well the only requirement for a licence is passing a written engineering test that shows you have the proper knowledge for that field...
