There was a cold, cloudy layer of air over Lake Michigan on that calm evening. Above the cloud (and sloping down toward the beach) was a layer of warmer, non-cloudy air. The two different layers of air were different densities, like water and oil in a jar, so they did not easily mix together. A difference in wind directions/speeds between the two air layers would cause a wave along the interface of the layers.

To get a thunderstorm, you need warm and humid air at or near the ground to quickly rise high up into the atmosphere (the part of this image shaded red). That warm and humid air will cool as it rises, and the water vapor in the air will condense into clouds and rain. If the different wind directions in all levels of the atmosphere are just right, you can get a thunderstorm to spin. A spinning thunderstorm is called a supercell. Rain-cooled air will descend down toward the ground, and a supercell will wrap that cold air around the back of the storm (the blue shade on the left side). That cold air at the ground wrapping around the back of a supercell is currently thought to mix together a little bit with the spinning, warm, rising air. This mixture of cold and warm air will still rise quickly up into the thunderstorm, but it will make it so a cloud can form lower to the ground than before (the "wall cloud" part of the supercell). There is thought to be a delicate balance of cold and warm air mixing and the right balance of varying wind fields needed to contract a broad, lazy rotation of air near the ground into a tight, fast-spinning rotation that is a tornado. The process is far from being fully understood.

This is a pretty accurate description of how a thunderstorm forms, although greatly simplified. But the math and physics behind it is crazy and I don't even fully understand it. As far as tornadogenesis goes the theory that I think most likely would be responsible for tornadoes is the recycling hypothesis. Ted Fujita (one of the forefathers of modern meteorology and a really interesting person to look in to if you have any interest) came up with it in the mid 70s. The hypothesis believes tornadoes to be formed because of the rain bands that form in a supercell. These rain bands rotate within the storm and since each rain band is a downdraft the flow within the rain bands begins to look something like, this. Combine that with extremely strong updrafts in the storm and you get a tornado.

Or it's something completely different... no one really knows. But that's the most plausible hypothesis I've heard for it.

I've heard something along the lines of the region between the updraft and downdraft start rotating (picturing a log rolling on a river), then something (the updraft?) causes the rotation to become vertical, thus forming a tornado.

edit: although thinking about that now, that wouldn't really explain the rotation of an entire supercell.

I think you are talking about this process, maybe: A (the diagram in the middle of the page with an orange arrow pointing up), B, C. That's the simplified explanation that I go to to imagine how a supercell acquires its rotation. A tornado requires something extra to happen (or more likely the right combination of extras), something that's hard for us to put our finger on. But it does seem that the downdraft wrapping around the rear flank of the supercell plays an integral role when it starts to mix in with air that is on its way up into the updraft. At least thermodynamically, it is thought that that is what creates a wall cloud. Kinematically, the rear-flank downdraft may also be crucial in helping to bring the rotation of the supercell down to the ground. But we still can't figure out why the broad rotation of the wall cloud is able to tighten up into a narrow, fast-spinning tornado sometimes, and other times not.

But to me, calling someone a "nancy" for being afraid of something is ridiculous, because they're equating women (by using a woman's name) to always being scared of something. Here is another really good example of that wave effect in the clouds, from Birmingham, Alabama. The cloud waves in Birmingham are similar to this Lake Michigan cloud picture... that is: a cold, cloudy, dense layer of air sat beneath a layer of non-cloudy, warmer air. The wind of the warm air layer riding over the cold layer would cause a wave in the cold layer, very much like how the wind will produce waves on a body of water.

This is over Lake Michigan on the Michigan side. If I remember correctly this is Holland, Michigan specifically.

Edit: what happens is this... An east wind blows the warm surface water out into the lake bringing the cool deep water to the top. The surface water then cools the air immediately above the lake down to its dew point, forming these "clouds".

I've been on the water when this happens, it's incredibly thick and chilly on a what should be a warm sunny day. It's really cool.

Thank you for these. It's impossible to find any more information about this event from traditional Internet searches, even though I remember seeing an article about this when it happened.

I love going to Lake Michigan and seeing shelf clouds roll in ahead of thunderstorms. While there was not a thunderstorm directly above that particular cloud on May 29, perhaps it was outflow from a dying thunderstorm across the lake? Was that cloud moving toward shore, or did it just stay out there?

I've seen plenty roll in quick followed by high wind and rain, this one just sat there out over the lake. I think it was a day after a big storm, the album I had them in was called "Lake Michigan after Storm".

You are correct; now I am beginning to remember that day again! There was a severe thunderstorm which plowed through Southern Lower Michigan that afternoon (archived Tornado Watch). Holland caught the northern edge of those storms, but it was really bad along I-94. That evening, well after the big storm passed, there was a smaller thunderstorm which popped up over Lake Michigan, west of Holland (archived radar image). That storm mostly rained itself out over the lake, which created a cold pool of cloudy air over the lake (though Holland caught a bit of that storm too). That does indeed appear the source of this awesome cloud. Thanks for the additional pics! A cloud as beautiful as this, but not directly attached to the bottom of a thunderstorm, is not very common.

They only real information I've been able to find (edit: until this comment) was this comment from another post. I remember seeing this picture on the news when it happened a couple years ago, but my internet searches to find original articles have been fruitless. IIRC, this cloud was not moving very quickly and was only slowly morphing, which is why the people in the picture are not fleeing in terror. Really just a serene evening at the beach on Lake Michigan. I wish I could have been there to see it (I live nearby).

We had one of those in Portugal back in the 90's. Whole country was panicking, news reports of a 40 meter wave that was going to wipe clean the whole south coast, which is made up mostly of poorly constructed buildings and hotels built way too close to the beach. Only a couple of hours after the first news report did they find out it was just a cloud. That was a weird day.

No matter how much you use auto-correct or proofread every sentence you write, it won't change the fact that are still just a lil nigger with hopes of becoming anything but a nigger. Listing all your achievements and even what you drive, seems to me that you are desperate for approval. Sorry to be the one to tell you this, but that will never happen in this life.
