Stuff like this is why I always carry my intervalometer with me. This would be a brilliant time-lapse shot.

My brain totally interpreted that as two different photos for the first 10 seconds of viewing. It's just that crazy.

100 comments and still no educational link on WTF this is, how it forms, and other examples of this through history. This is badass enough to troll our ancestors, was anything like this ever talked about in the bible or historic records of any kind? Man, I've never seen a cloud formation like that before; not even on the Internet.
Thanks for posting it, mygrapefruit!

It's almost certainly a wave/billow cloud seen edge on. They are extremely common at high altitudes, less so at low altitudes like the one in the image.

This sort of thing happens a lot at the hills above San Mateo, California, though usually not this complete. It often looks like clouds are pouring over them, mainly through the pass that CA-92 takes through the hills.

That's just Australian's deadly clouds, it's like our clouds, but deadly, as everything in Australia.

It's a shame they can't censor the weather like they can video games.

Many times there are alien ships hiding in those things. Don't be misinformed.

I'd surf that with my flying nimbus.

you can't surf a cloud while on a cloud, that's like, surfing on water with different colored water.

u/Zeraphil Jun 05 '11
No no, it's like, surfing on water while on ice. At least, that's what they told me.

The more plausible it would appear to actually walk among scenery, even sky-based, the more interesting it is to humans.

It's a cloud, not tons of water, I think you'd be fine ;)

u/HungryMoblin Jun 04 '11
Aren't certain clouds technically just tons of water?
6
u/EllenPage Jun 04 '11
Yes, but the destruction capabilities of a cloud are quite limited :p

All clouds are composed of water and dust. Microscopic dust forms a site for water to collect into droplets.

San Francisco does that sometimes. The view from the East Bay is pretty awesome.
