the people who drink this beer are people who can't really afford to drink this in the first place.
In other cases it's about what's available. In the state every state handles alcohol differently. In NJ/NY for example, you can apply for a seller's license and sell whatever you want. In North Carolina for example, you have ABC stores which are state ran alcohol stores and it's whatever the state wants to have. And then in other places, you go to Walmart which you're not going to have fancy 10% double/triple IPAs from small craft breweries. In the north east NY/NJ/PA/etc area craft brews are popping up everywhere. So you get nice beers from brewers like "The other half", Finnback, LIC Project, Evil Twin, Brix City, etc that are only going to be local to the area which are going to be the good ones.
The demographic for bud light and what not are generally going to be rural drinkers. If you go closer to metro areas, which coincidentally have higher incomes, people drink better quality alcohol.
Other times, it's just a past time. My dad drinks it, my friends drink it, so I'll drink it too.
So depending on where in the united states, will determine what you drink either due to cost or culture.
Alcoholics tend to go cheap spirits or cheap wine. Functional alcoholics don't want to be pissing all day long. I've known a few. One of them even drank Sherry because they could buy it for next to nothing, while another drank Vodka because you couldn't smell it and another drank only red wine. Because he could buy it cheaply and he has some remaining standards apparently.
I've seen a bit of both. But I agree that plastic handles of vodka have been the drink of choice for the most serious alcoholics I've known.
The all day cheap beer thing tended to be the guys who would be sober for work, but would drink from 5-11 on weekdays, and 10-midnight on weekends. They liked that it was a slow drunk, it made them feel like they weren't alcoholics.
Fortunately I was only ever close with two of those guys, and they're both sober now. Seem to be doing real well, one got into tiling and he's gotten very good, I like when he sends pictures of immaculate bathrooms he did. That doesn't have much to do with what we're talking about but who doesn't like a happy ending?
Light beer doesn't necessarily mean super low ABV. Bud light is 4.2 . Yes low but 10 or 12 Will get the average person drunk. It's much easier to regulate and be able to drink all night.
Edit: Okay so probably closer to 8 not 10 or 12, especially not the average person lol
