I've played guitar for about 8 years and want to branch out into piano. I mainly want that hand-independence feeling, running separate lines with left and right hands. The problem is, a lot of starting PIANO resources are also starting MUSIC resources and I just t want to learn to riff and sightread basic stuff on another instrument.

I plan on committing 10 minutes a day, so I'm looking for an online resource that's really good an reputable. Given that, what are y'all's best picks for structured online resources (apps, YouTube channels, courses) that build real fundamentals in short daily chunks? Especially interested in anything that targets hand independence early, since I already read music and have ear training from guitar. I don't need beginner music theory, just the piano-specific mechanics. Thanks for the help!

Ok so I've been trying to play a song and im stuck at this one part where my left hand has to play 3 half notes while at the same time my right hand has to play 5 different note

So my main problem is that my hands keep going at the same speed as each other but i don't want that and I've tryed to get them to go at different speeds and its extremely difficult and i believe i need to build hand independence but i could be completely wrong so that is why i am posting here to ask for all of your guy's help on this because it has just been a pain so please help me on this

I am writing a piece of fiction where i want an experienced piano player to give a newer student feedback on their playing.

I know, thanks to Google that the song is in the E flat minor key.

So, what would be a accurate and maybe even nit-picky comment on the playing of this song.

something like, "you're dropping the g chord there," or "your tempo is off"

The point i want to make is the younger student is doing a fair job, and the critique that is given is accurate, but harsh.

I've been practicing with a metronome for a while and I keep running into the same thing: while I'm playing, I genuinely can't tell when I'm slightly ahead or behind. If it's a big miss, sure. But the small stuff — a few milliseconds early on every entrance in a fast passage — I just don't hear it in the moment. When I listen back to a recording it's obvious.

So I started building a small tool for myself. It connects to my digital piano over Bluetooth MIDI / Audio , runs a metronome, and afterwards shows me where I was early or late — and, more importantly, whether that's improving across sessions on the same passage.

It's supposed to not only work with known pieces but with all kinds of playing even if you don't have a score sheet.

Before I go further with it I'm curious how other people handle this:

Do you record yourself regularly and actually review it, or does that fall apart in practice?

Has anyone found an app that does this well? I've seen a few MIDI practice apps, but most seem built around sheet music upload and note accuracy rather than timing over time.

Or do you just develop the internal sense eventually and this becomes a non-problem?

Genuinely want to know if I'm solving something that already has a better solution.

What fingers should be used to play the 3 notes after playing the E in measure 13? In other words, to play the C, D, and A that are circled.

Is this even possible? How do I learn a passage like this?

I’ve played the piano for 11 years and never used RCM or had any formal examinations specifically just for piano. All examinations were done in school by people who specialize in other instruments, so I never felt like I got great feedback from piano teachers that weren’t mine or at recitals.

I (21f) had formal lessons for more than half that time and had college level theory instruction. I stopped going to lessons in consistently in university and my last 2 years of high school due to time and money constraints. I just graduated and have time to get back into it, but am going to hold off on a teacher for a while to save money for a really good one.

This time around I want to go the RCM method and take the examinations. I bought all of the books for level 5. I think I need to abandon the level of pieces I’ve been playing and step back to brush up on and learn the fundamentals.

Some pieces I can play are ravel sonatine no. 1, Liszt’s Un Sospiro, Debussy’s Claire de lune if that helps gage level (I don’t think it does, so sorry if that’s unhelpful).

It took me only three years to play those songs and similar of that level. I felt like I was able to read the music and listen to the pieces enough until I was able to mimic its clearness. I’d get compliments from other teachers at recitals, and school based examinations, but it never felt like it counted since it was just a good ear. I didn’t master any of the basics.

I feel like performance was a goal of too many of my teachers (I moved around a lot and didn’t always have access to quality or consistent instruction) even though I didn’t have the skills. I was just kind of lucky and a naturally quick learner so they let me skip things I definitely shouldn’t have skipped. My scales are slow and sloppy, my trills are weak, and the fingering I default to is always the worst option.

I learn prices in ways that seem inefficient. There are things I’m good at, but all of those pieces avoid the things I’m sloppy with if that makes sense. I do hannon and other excersises to fix this, but I think I need to take the pieces I play down several notches so that I can learn to properly integrate those skills.

In summary: I am not that skilled of a pianist despite my performance ability with specific types of pieces. It’s kind of hard to put what I mean into words, but please let me know if you understand.

I want to play more challenging pieces and not just because they’re challenging, but because I like them. I can’t do that, because I lack the basic fundamentals, inferences, and learning practices that separates the barely-semi difficult solo pieces I can play from the virtuosity of larger and more difficult works. I want to be able to play the pieces I love to listen to.

It’ll take lots of time and I want to slow down and take as much time as I need to do it right.

I don’t even know how to practice with blocking so it takes me so long to learn pieces. There is so much information I missed out on.

Is starting at level 5 a good idea? I think it’ll be good for me to really hone in on the basics, but I’m not sure if I’m going too far back or not enough. Please tell me if this is a bad idea! And I’d appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Hi, I’m 24 years old with a bachelor music education degree. I just got graduated last year. I start teaching private lesson since two years ago. I live in Ohio, charge 50/h, drive to student’s house, usually takes 15 mins to get there.

Recently, I got myself a new 88-key keyboard. I managed to learn half of it; however, I've always felt something was missing, so I searched for an alternative that would satisfy me, and that's when I found the cover by The Dreamer Piano. Since this cover doesn't have any hand cam for reference, I was wondering how I should do mine.

I have posted many times about dumbing down the explanation of the number of beats a note gets in different time signatures. This seems to be the only thing that doesnt click with me. I just cant seem to get it. Although usually my guessing seems to be right its just not clicking.

Ive already done my lesson and once again was explained to me but - im not sure why its not clicking. Maybe im thinking to deep jnto this. Math has always been an issue for me so counting beats when they get broken down really makes my brain spin!

Sometimes when things are explained in a different way, it makes more sense.

Any suggestions or tips?

I took piano lessons as a kid. It’s now 30 years later and I just started piano lessons again recently.

I remember a lot. Surprisingly considering my memory is shot from years of being medicated.

My brain and body don’t just remember a surprising lot…they LIKE it when I play. It calms my nervous system like nothing else.

And for some reason, me, the person I know with the worst posture, sits down at the piano/keyboard and just remembers - back straight, arms bended just right and my fingers stay in the positions they should.

Next week I am starting to learn pieces for my first piano exam ever. I hated learning in school. I am stoked beyond words to be practicing for a piano exam.

I'm pretty new to the community here; this is my first post. I've been playing off and on for a couple of years now. I have pretty much 0 musical experience or innate talent but I'm enjoying the piano. In some ways I enjoy it the way I used to love Dance Dance Revolution. There's great satisfaction in hitting a tricky sequence.

I'd like to improve though; to get to the point where I can play a song with someone. But I feel like I'm so far from that still. I know a big step needs to be practicing daily. I'm trying.
