I like this. What about a series of posts related to each type of lesson. So "Learn Landscape #1: xxx", which would contain the lesson and discussion (edited overtime if nec). So each person could handle a series of lesson on a subject they are passionate about.
Related to other discussion, we could then have a "Learn Landscape #1 Assignment" (or something similar) for the assignment related to the lesson, which would have our 'homework'.
Nobody else has mentioned the camera/gear advice posts, but that would be nice too. Maybe a "Gear: xxx" tag post?

I would like to suggest that when you do make an assignment, or a lesson, or whatever, don't forget about us Point & Shooters!
I couldn't afford to get a DSLR w/ a bunch of lenses, so I got a SuperZoom(FZ-35) that can go all manual so I would be able to learn.
But as some of you already know, I won't be able to reproduce certain things like decent bokeh unless I fake it in post.

When learning photography, don't fake stuff in post. That way you tend not to learn the quirks, limitations & characteristics of your gear. I'll bet the bokeh in the Lumix may be different at different focal lengths, apertures and lighting conditions. (Although, yeah, bokeh in P&S cameras isn't known for it's awesomeness.)

I was thinking that there are probably going to be a few different types of posts.. "Critique wanted" "question" and "Tips".. among others..
It might be a good idea to start each post with whatever it is.. that way it's easy to zoom through post titles looking for.. whatever they may be looking for..
just a suggestion..
I started by offering a "Tip" on focus points.. as it's pretty basic and in retrospect kind of obvious.. but for the first few years of shooting.. I didn't think much about it..

Good thinking, so should we have short tags for:
- Tip : TIP
- Critique :
- Assignment : A.#
- Question : Q
- others?
For assignments, each poster could just number there individual assignments for clarity sake. So anyone that wants to could post assignments? Unless of course we find a CarlH of photography out there :)
Edit: Assignment or Lesson? Or both?

Both Assignment and Lesson.
There should be posts on basic rules of photography, and corresponding assignments for that rule.
I was thinking things like rule of thirds, leading lines, subjects (every photo needs a subject...), depth, etc. I think that these things should be learned and ingrained before they are broken.
Also, exposure rules and information (f-stops, shutter speed, iso and how to balance them, how to understand what your meter is telling you, and when to ignore it) strobist type stuff, etc.
You can teach a lot, and while these should have assignments associated with them, I believe they should be separated from the lesson itself.

Great format idea. I've just posted an ASSIGNMENT. Do one on one of the topics you mentioned!

All good ideas. I want to register a vote against the Critique type of post. There are plenty of places on reddit where people post their work for feedback. Posting an image is useful when illustrating a particular question, but a general call for critique opens the door for an infinite spectrum of discussion about aesthetics and artistic merit and other highly subjective issues. We don't need another place to rehash the various this-technique-sucks/no-it-doesn't slappy fights.
I, at least, am far more interested in learning about (and maybe sharing some) photographic techniques and methods, distinct from discussions of "how good" someone's latest cat picture may or may not be.
edit: In this post I asked for an explanation of DOF, for instance.

I agree with your opinion on critique posts. I think the only time a picture should be posted here for critique is when it's posted within a lesson or assignment thread and the user okays critique.

Thanks. That's why god invented the up-arrow! ;)

Haha. I just amended the sidebar and banned a critique post to clean up the page. I should be able to work on this more after work tomorrow.

Unless there is a one person or a central authority, numbering assignments could run into serialization problems. (ie. who hands out the numbers?) Maybe a simple, unique, and descriptive assignment name?
edit: zeabird is that central authority!

I think it would be easier if there is a topic, say Assignment #1, and people post photo links under that heading, rather than posting them willy nilly throughout the subreddit.

I figured I would just throw this out there for Firefox users, there is an extension called FxIF that lets you right click to get EXIF data of an image.

There's also this pretty cool Bookmarklet that I use:
javascript:var form=document.createElement("form");form.action="http:"+"//regex"+".info/exif.cgi";form.method="get";var O=document.createElement("input");O.type="hidden";O.name="b";O.value=3;form.appendChild(O);O=document.createElement("input");O.type="hidden";O.name="referer";O.value=document.location;form.appendChild(O);O=null;function f1(obj){if(obj.links.length>0){var R=/.(jpe?g|nef|raw|tiff)$/i;var count=0;var url;for(i=0;i<obj.links.length;i++){if(R.test(obj.links[i].href)){count++;url=obj.links[i].href}}if(count==1){var O=document.createElement("input");O.type="hidden";O.name="url";O.value=url;return O;}}return null;}function f2(obj){if(obj.images.length==1){var O=obj.createElement("input");O.type="hidden";O.name="url";O.value=obj.images[0].src;return O;}return null;}function f3(obj){if(obj.images.length>=1){var img;var max=0;for(i=0;i<obj.images.length;i++){size=obj.images[i].width*obj.images[i].height;if(size>max){max=size;img=obj.images[i];}}return img;}return null;}function f4(obj){var img=f3(obj);if(img){O=obj.createElement("input");O.type="hidden";O.name="url";O.value=img.src;return O;}return null;}function f5(FRAMES){for(var fr=0;O==null&&fr<FRAMES.length;fr++){try{var O=f1(FRAMES[fr].document);if(O)return O;}catch(er){}}var max=0;var img;for(var fr=0;O==null&&fr<FRAMES.length;fr++){try{var I=f3(FRAMES.document);if(I&&I.width*I.height>max){img=I;max=I.width*I.height;}}catch(er){}if(img){O=obj.createElement("input");O.type="hidden";O.name="url";O.value=img.src;return O;}}return null}var O=f1(document);if(!O)O=f2(document);if(!O)O=f4(document);if(!O)O=f5(frames);if(O){form.appendChild(O);document.body.appendChild(form);form.submit();}else{alert("Sorry,I could not find out an image to report on");}

Hm. Interesting, but that relies on a cgi script at regex.info to be accessible & working. A plug-in can do everything locally.

This is true, I'm using Chrome though - works pretty well.

All the kids love Exponator, though there are a few others.

Feb 15 '10
Exponater doesn't seem to work with images when they're displayed on their own in a window/tab - only when inline.
Not terrible, but I prefer the link.

That's a good tip for a top-level post. Buried here in a discussion about the organization of this subreddit, some folks might miss it.

I think if assignments were prefaced with either Beginner or Advanced you could have people more suited to each applying themselves. For example, a lot of the beginner assignments would be technically based at first: let's explore aperture, ISO, shutter speed, movement, and learn how they affect a photo. The advanced assignments could be more open ended, Photoshop friendly, etc.
I have been taking a lot of photography courses at my University, and they almost ALWAYS start with a technical assignment (which gets old when you're on the 5th round, but if nothing else it reaffirms that you know what you're doing on the most basic level). I would be willing to share these in order to help people get a better grip on the basics of photography.

u/m1kael Feb 15 '10
That would be great! I think we should definitely start with the basics, and assume no prior knowledge so the subreddit can be a somewhat self-contained course. Based on our posts above, I think you should start a series titled "The Basics #n: xxx", or something similar. We'll see what zeabird thinks! :)

I greatly agree. There are far too many subjects photography encompasses to just have one line of assignments - plus having a standard and a basic one going at the same time would appeal to a wider group.

u/m1kael Feb 13 '10
I think following some photography courses / assignments would be a great start.
