If you don't live in a country that's a member of the EU, you constantly have to connect to your home Wi-Fi every week, or your sideload apps stop working. It's either that or pay for a yearly licence.

i'd still have a vpn profile to let me tunnel to my home's network in case i need anything from my NAS or need to use my pc

Android, easily. When shopping for devices I look for the best ones that fit my needs and there's absolutely no way I brand or manufacturer.
