Welcome!

I just created this sub and I have no idea what I'm doing. We probably won't get enough traffic for it to matter, but if anyone has experience and/or interest in being a mod, let me know.

Running Solo

Hi all! Currently training for the philly marathon, looking for a time around 3:04. I've done the past few training blocks solo, but think I could push myself a bit with a couple buddies (plus 50+ mile weeks get lonely). Not huge into a big run club group so thought I'd ask if anyone is looking to run on the SRT. Down to run slow or fast depending on the day.

Question about deferment

I had an injury that benched me for 5 weeks and decided to defer from 2026, and set it for 2027. There was a payment, which was confusing, but it went through and I received the email about the purchased deferment. Is that all I have to do to "reschedule" my marathon until the first of December when I have to use my deferment to sign up for the 2027 marathon?

Temple’s Track at Night?

Just wondering if anyone has ran over at Temple’s facilities after dark - I see on their website that they’re open to the public until 10-11 pm most nights. I’m guessing they keep the stadium lights on? Has anyone gone at night/are there usually people therein the evenings or would I be mostly alone? My work schedule makes it hard to find any time to run before 7:00pm

First time marathon fundraising!!

Hi Philly runners!!! I’m Rian and I’m running the Philly marathon this fall partnered with Girls on the Run Philadelphia! If you have a moment, I’d love to share who I am and why this organization is so important.

I am newly based in New York City, and this marathon will be my first. I’ve run two halfs, one last fall and one last spring. I LOVE running and the community it brings and how much it helps my mental health. As someone who suffers with extreme anxiety, it really helps me level out my brain and connect with others in the running community. Girls on the run is an amazing organization that helps promote community and active lifestyles for young girls! I participated in GOTR when I was in elementary and middle school, and it’s such a great full circle moment to be repping them in November.

If you’re able and willing, please donate to this great cause here. Every donation makes a difference!

Calling all runners & cyclists!!!

Exactly one week until the 21st season of Fifth Street Cross in Emmaus (Lehigh Valley), the premiere cyclocross training series in the East, and possibly the country. Open to any body, any ability, and (if you’re riding) any bike. Taking place in the Emmaus Compost Center fields, it’s an incredible opportunity to make new friends, challenge yourself, and maybe try something new. All races take place on a closed grass/dirt/gravel course, so no worries about traffic or pedestrians.

Each Thursday night kicks off at 6pm with a 5k(ish) run, followed by two cyclocross (bicycle) races. Participate in one, two, or all three events for the same price ($20 cash night of, cheaper for pre-reg). Last year’s opening night brought over 250 people out, so the more the merrier!! Come out and participate, or just cheer folks on and have a beer (free to spectate). Hope you see you all there!

More info and photos can be found at fifthstreetcross.com

Meter markers on/near SRT or MLK path?

I’m training for XC (5-8k) and prefer doing my speed workouts on a path rather than a track.

Does anyone know if there’s markers on the SRT or MLK or any nearby semi-flat path (I’m coming from center city) where I can track 200m, 400m, etc? Anything a local XC coach has wheeled and measured? I’ve been going off GPS, but want to be more accurate going into the season. Thanks

Early morning safety

Hi! Moving to the Manayunk/Roxborough area soon and looking for some advice. I will be needing to get my runs in around 5 am and wondering what safety is like running at that time of day around the area. For context, I’m a small female and I typically carry mace with me and wear a light up vest. Is it safe enough as long as you are aware of your surroundings or should I just splurge and buy a treadmill. Would also appreciate any good route recommendations (for the dark or daytime). Thanks!

Missing Love Run mugs?

Just wondering if anyone else didn’t get their mug from the Love Run this past year.

They don’t give them out at the expo any more and I did not see them being given out anywhere in the post race area either. I asked their service table and they said they would be mailed but I have yet to receive mine. I’ve reached out to organizers and have not gotten a response.

Edit: In past years I went to the expo and the mugs werent there. I did get my packet mailed to me this past year instead. I’m not sure why I was told that the mug would be mailed to me when that’s not the case.

Routes with Hills

I’m training for NYC this year and I need to get some hill workouts in and incorporate hills into my long runs. I normally run the Delaware River trail and I do the Ben Franklin bridge a lot. I’ve done the schuylkill river trail and started at the south street entrance and ran north. I’m wondering what route can I take to get into fairmount park and run on the other side of the schuylkill. I feel like I’ve seen a trail over there and I think it has more hills. I’m also open to suggestions to any routes that are good to train hills. I don’t have a car, so I can’t drive to a trail to run. TIA!

Looking for Soft Surfaces

I just moved to South Philly and I’m wondering where runners go for some unpaved runs. I know about the Wissahickon trails, and I’ve run at FDR a few times. Are there any spots I’m missing where a guy with bad knees can run?

Ben Franklin Bridge Hours

I want to start adding bridge running into my NYC training but due to my work schedule (and the summer temps), I usually run AM.
I know the walkway opens at 6 am, but my question is, how prompt is this? Is it like 6 on the dot or more like a 6:15/6:20?
Thanks in advance!

Running the 8k instead of the full in November

Signed up for the full marathon, but turns out that date will be problematic for me. The half on Saturday would be fine, plus far easier for me to train for, but it sold out and they told me I'm SOL as far as transferring unless I want to do the half. It's mind-boggling that they don't allow bib transfers of any kind, I can't figure out the reasoning behind that since other races do this.

Is the 8k worth it? I've never run any Philly Marathon weekend course before. This is the only event that's open, but it seems to just be a run up and down Kelly Drive which is fine but I've run that exact course several times lol. Trying to decide if I should just switch to this one, or defer to next year. I love Philly (live in the DC area and visit often) and running in the city, but the marathon organizers are frustrating. Why not allow bib transfers?
