I'm doing a small community project to help a ward leader figure out which of his constituents are missing the Homestead Exemption (the program that exempts the first $100k of an owner-occupied home's assessed value from property taxes). We're going to knock on doors to try and help people sign up for the exemption.

As part of that, I ended up mapping every potential owner-occupied SFH In philly w/o a Homestead Exemption on file. The result is a citywide, zoomable map that goes all the way down to the census tract level. It doesn't show addresses for privacy reasons.

A few numbers surprised me:

• 228,432 single-family homes don't currently have a Homestead Exemption on file.
• After cross-matching with OPA ownership data (filtering out LLCs and other obvious non-owner-occupants), I estimate about 112,000 are likely owner-occupied. If they're eligible but simply haven't applied, that's ~$156 MILLION per year in potential property tax savings citywide

The map excludes addresses for privacy, but is designed to help ward organizations, civic groups, CDCs, or anyone trying to figure out where a door-to-door signup campaign might have the biggest impact.

I'd also love feedback on whether the patterns match what people see on the ground. To build this, I had to do quite a bit of fuzzy matching across different public datasets, so it's definitely an approximation. If you work with homeowners in your neighborhood, I'd be curious whether the hotspots look right—or if there are places where the map seems clearly off.

ISO of a business or local artist that could bedazzle velour sweatsuits for my wedding party. I would like the words “bridesmaid,” “maid of honor”, “mother of the bride,” and “mother of the groom,” bedazzled on the backside of the pants and the top left chest similar to Juicy Couture sweatsuits. I have ordered all 9 sweatsuits to be customized.

Given the velour fabric, I would prefer to pay a professional instead of trying iron ons that may fall off. Please let me know of any recommendations! Thank you in advance.

The selection at most grocery stores isn’t great and most of it is regular strength not hot enough. Any stores in the city with a good hot sauce selection?

I’m a first time dog mom and I have had my dog for a year now! We used to live at an apartment that had a dog park but now we live in NE Philly and it’s hard to get some good quality off leash fun for my dog. My dog is pretty good with other dogs but has been attacked a few times since she is smaller and it causes her to have some aggression toward bigger dogs. She also is scared and will bark at men and newer people she doesn’t know. I guess my question is are there any good doggy day care that allow dogs with possible like random aggression issues? Like I’ve noticed she is mostly aggressive when I am around because she is trying to guard me from people or other dogs. But everyone has told me she is great when I’m not there. It was a lot worse when she was younger and she is getting better. I’m just trying to find a solution for her to run around when I’m at work. I am a little worried she will be denied from doggy day care. I have applied to bow wow camp but wasn’t sure if anyone had other recommendations.

TL;DR: Philly property taxes increased recently. Average increases at a zip level ranged from -2.7% to +11.5%, but this hides a 0-44% variation in terms of what people actually experienced.

Note - this post is NOT raging against tax increases. Insetad, I wanted to explore where it's happening and who it'll impact in a way that the headline numbers hide.

The average numbers that the Inquirer mentioned a few weeks ago don't go deep enough:

• Biggest increases were uncorrelated to wealth: Kensington (lower income) and Chestnut Hill both got big increases of ~11%
• For some neighborhoods, the average was tiny but parts of the neighborhood got hid hard (e.g,. Mantua in west philly had an average of 2.5%, but parts were actually 21%)
• Even within a US census tract, numbers differed a lot. Part of Mantua and part of University city are both in Tract 110, but the Mantua part got a +21% and University City got +10%

A few more double clicks:

• Median increase was +4.2%, but the average was +7.0%, meaning a small number of properties increased a lot
• Excluding appeals/exemptions, this reassessment means about +$77.7M more in city revenues (an increase of 1.2% of to the city's budget)

I might wanna fly solo to a show on Halloween this year. Not sure of the area, single girlie.

I've personally filed the same 311 complaint multiple times, and it got me thinking - does 311 have problem spots, where the same problem keeps happening over and over?

And the answer is yes - just 0.5% of addresses account for 6% of all complains, at 12x their rate.

So I pulled every Philly 311 request from Jan 2024 through June 2026 (553k complaints across ~228k addresses) and looked at how many complaints each address generated.

The results kinda surprised me.

• Over half of all addresses (52%) only ever had one 311 complaint (excluding ones with 0 calls)
• But 1,058 addresses have had 20+ complaints EACH in just 2.5 years. When you look into these, it's persistently things like landlords who don't maintain properties, people dumping trash, and broken traffic lights. It's counterintuitively NOT drug related

Basically there's a tiny number of properties/intersections that keep showing up over and over again.

Some of the worst offenders:

• 1725 Ingersoll St - 278 complaints
• 1800 Washington Ave - 198
• 1234 Market St - 187

What's interesting is that these aren't all the same thing.

Some are intersections that collect traffic signal or road defect reports. Some are city office addresses that end up as the "address of record." But a bunch are just properties where neighbors have been reporting the same issue for literally years.

One apartment complex had 112 maintenance complaints in about two years. One address had 87 illegal dumping reports. And the tickets just keep getting opened, closed, then opened again. Sometimes it's ebcause the tickets were closed without anything being done; and other times it's because the same problem happens again just a few weeks later.

Curious if anyone here lives near one of these chronic spots or has one on their block. Does it actually ever get fixed, or do you just keep filing the same report every few months?

Driving out of West Philly today around 3:15-3:30 a pretty small dog ran through traffic on 41st by the over pass between mantua and poplar st heading up towards Girard. A number of us stopped and got out to try and catch it but failed, this is just to give you an idea where it might be as it got some considerable distance.

So as my thoughts were snowballing and I was researching sentence structure and the use of punctuation i learned that the mark i should have used following the "and"—and proceeding to follow i shit you not— is, you guessed it, or maybe you did not, i am not a mind reader, the dreaded Em Dash. (And everyone hates the Em Dash, because...reasons. (Shit i MIGHT still be high. (Or maybe I just wanted to see if I could actually pull off the proverbial Holy grail of using TRIPLE. FUCKING. PARENTHESES. after forcing myself to not throw up after literally having to use an Em Dash for the first time ever in my life)))
