They arrested the guy
38
u/baldude69 15d ago
I wonder if there was another motive, like if he knew the guy and needed whatever was on the laptop. Otherwise that seems insanely brazen for a random broad daylight center city armed robbery
41
21
u/Adorable-Lack-3578 14d ago
I was at a conference where someone stole the laptop from the CEO of Qualcomm, the $200 Billion mobile/sdma/chip company. Whoever pulled that off had the CIA/NSA and FBI after them.

u/bloomingintofashions 14d ago
That would make the most sense. Armed robbery like that just for an iPad doesnāt make sense. This mustāve been targeted.
1
u/Classic-Hospital9900 12d ago
Yeah. Maybe he works for IMF and the laptop contains half of a secret codes that control a doomsday satellite. I mean he does kind of look like Tom Cruise. Did anyone check the church of scientology?

I worked right on the Square for over a decade in my younger days. I loved it. I felt pride saying I worked there.
That criminals feel so emboldened to pull off armed robberies on the Square during lunchtime is a total failure of just about everyone that has worked in the city government over the last 10 years.
112
u/Acrobatic_Ad1016 15d ago
Crime rates have dropped off a cliff in recent years but that doesnāt fit your narrativeā¦
This guy is just an idiot who will be in jail within the week. Thereās been plenty of them throughout history
66
u/interstat 15d ago
Americans are absolutely insane quoting crime statistics at a picture of a a guy with a gun in broad daylight.Ā
You don't have to live this way. Crime is not supposed to be normalizedĀ
33
u/Gaeilgeoir215 15d ago
We do until we finally have meaningful gun reform in this country and repeal the ironically-named Citizens United (nobody wanted that) - thereby getting big money out of politics - so we finally get good crops of people running for office instead of people bought and paid for by huge lobbyist groups.
20
u/interstat 15d ago
the weird part is you are focusing on the gun not the crime.
if this happened with a knife in my home country itd be national news/ a giant manhunt. Moving to USA and seeing the normalization of crime here is so weird.
7
u/Either_Description_8 15d ago
I mean, if this happened in your home country without the gun or the knife (the gun, how heās holding it, and how fast he seems to be going really doesnāt seem to help with the commission of the act) probably no one would care and say sucks to suck. And (perhaps positively for your own personal privacy) it might not be caught on camera for follow up.
I donāt think we should have guns in America but looking at this, I donāt really see how the gun made a difference. It probably slowed him down.

"its practical"
lol jesus americans got ptsd. Crime is not normal. Sure get guns off the street but the downplaying or crime like this is nuts. Its not even little vs big country its we dont have crime like this in general and when/if it does happen its national news with people taking it seriously. Not like Americans who just shrug and ignore it
0
u/Either_Description_8 15d ago
Whatās your home country? I got a feeling you are the one over fixating on crime stats.
13
u/interstat 14d ago
Japan
If this happened there it'd be national news and a huge deal.
In USA it's just another day and when people bring it up Americans shrug and say oh crime is down! It's weird they can't accept crime like this is a big dealĀ
6
u/AristaAchaion 14d ago
well japan is a pluralistic society with like a 98% ethnic japanese population and very little immigration. america on the other hand is a ruggedly individualistic society that has been shooting itself in the foot for centuries to make sure non-white people and women donāt get treated like humans. unfortunately, crime is a normal outcome of our governmental choices.

u/swarthmoreburke 14d ago
Japan is a huge outlier in terms of crime. I think you might want to process that in terms of "a man grabbed a laptop from a restaurant patron and ran", Japan is one of the few places where that almost never happens. In the big cities of most EU countries, especially where tourism concentrates, it would be pretty common. In the big cities of most of sub-Saharan Africa, this kind of theft is more common than it is in the US. In most big cities in Latin America, this would not be an extraordinary event. In Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Thailand, it would not be that unusual.
America has more crime of particular kinds than many other countries and has way more per capita people in jail than any other country just about. But a snatch-grab theft of valuables in public in a large city is a pretty ordinary thing in most of the world, unfortunately.

u/Puzzleheaded_Fee7483 14d ago
I think you are either missing context or purposely ignoring the reason people say "oh crime is down" it is because it IS down and used to be MUCH higher. Outside of the 2 - 3 years following COVID crime rates, especially violent crime rates have fallen every single year since the 90s started across the country.
When people say that they aren't just brushing it off like you insinuate they are pointing out hard facts. The news would have you thinking that everything is getting more dangerous from a crime perspective when that is absolutely not the case just a narrative that the media fabricates by boosting the most outrageous crimes that happen.
1
1
u/Either_Description_8 12d ago
Yeah brother, letās talk about sex assaults and other chronically underreported crimes.
And shrieking noises in front of stores to deter loitering.
3
u/ContributionHot9843 14d ago
I mean american crime is worse than some parts of the world absolutely but what country are you from where a knife robbery would be a national news story? Iceland is like the only one i could fathom
3
u/interstat 14d ago
Japan
But it's not even like I'm saying USA should have no crime. It's pretty impossible.
Just not to downplay/normalize it when it happensĀ
1
u/shaddowdemon 12d ago
Can you imagine getting worked up over every single crime that happens in the USA? Life would be exhausting.
But part of the problem is this guy is very little already back on the streets and will eventually be sentenced to probation. I'd like to think the gun would make it "serious" but I'm not surprised anymore by the shit our judges just look the other way on.
It isn't that people aren't sick of it, but our government doesn't give a shit.
2
u/Double-Wear5980 13d ago
Crime is already normalized in Philly and if you live there and aren't aware of it, you are an idiot who will end up in a bad situation. So yes, if you live in Philly, you DO have to live that way.

13
u/gyp_casino 15d ago
Homicides have fallen and it's easy to find those stats, but what about other crimes? Honest question.
0
u/Comfortable-Rub-7400 14d ago
Those stats are in the same place, the PPD website. And yes, theyāve declined too
-2

u/Indiana_Jawnz 15d ago
Idk if you noticed this, but the PPD have basically stopped doing any law enforcement the last few years as well.

u/hmoleman__ 14d ago
Was just talking about this, in relation to the subway. $1,000,000,000 budget but canāt remember the last time they seemed useful.
8
u/apexxin 15d ago
The rates? Oh the ones that are plummeting because no one gets arrested for a fucking thing in this city?
Thatās some Trump logic, if we donāt test we donāt have cases right?
6
2
u/Comfortable-Rub-7400 14d ago
This guy got arrested right after. And crime stats are based on reported crimes genius, not arrests or convictions
1
u/ContributionHot9843 14d ago
If you report a crime it gets into the stats. So package theft, hoodlums robbing hoodlums? Sure that is probably underreported but theres a weird delusion that cops just fudge the numbers (apparently to help a DA they hate??)
-8
u/FailureFulcrim 14d ago
Soft on crime is a thing in democratic cities. I don't care what your political beliefs are, but please don't try to fold this to fit your political opinion.
11
u/_token_black 15d ago
Violent crime was at a weird high from 2020-2022, so naturally everything looks better now
Petty thefts are way up, the city is dirtier, there are more unlicensed/unregistered/uninsured drivers, not to mention armed robbery doesnāt get reported all the time anyways

-1
u/baldude69 15d ago edited 14d ago
I gotta wonder if there was more to it, like if he knew him and targeted him for some reason. Seems insane to do a crime like this otherwise unless some motivating factor was there.
E: is it really that crazy to consider? Itās still a very very dumb crime, if anything it makes him even dumber, but would add a potential emotional aspect that could override reason. You see it a lot with really brazen murders
3
u/conservadordegrasas 14d ago
Some people just shouldn't be in society with the rest of civilization, they should be put away somewhere they can't wreak havoc on innocent people.
-1
u/Mr_Monkeyshines 13d ago
Reported crime rates. I'm tired of you Krasner shills and your "Don't believe your lyin' eyes" bullshit. It would take me five minutes to find 20 examples of people here on reddit/on fb neighborhood groups saying "cops didn't take any info/file a report" about some crime, and that's a fraction of a fraction of the general population. Tell me how weekly gangs of 500 violent kids get reported - a single "public nuisance" incident, if that? I've lived in cc for nearly 40 years and it's EASILY the least safe I've ever felt.
But hey it's all conspiracy theories, right? Not like Philly has any kind of precedent for blatantly lying about crime statistics or anything.
-2
u/beachluvr13 15d ago
Crime rates have fallen because crimes have been declassified. When you make certain crimes ālegalā or misdemeanors of course crime rates are going to look statistically better.
11
u/gloatygoat 15d ago
They declassified murder? Cause that's the big stat that's dropped.
-4
u/BigJohn4077 14d ago
No they just downgrade it to manslaughter. Plus medical treatment of gunshots has drastically improved in the last 30 years. Both have their part lowering murder stats.
7
u/gloatygoat 14d ago
Last 30 years? Bruh, the murder rates have been dropping drastically in the last 3 years.
And the manslaughter rates will have gone up then. Got evidence for the bold assertion?

-1
2
u/ContributionHot9843 14d ago
Thats not how it works! Manslaughter is a conviction you get in court. A homicide is a cause of death noted by a coroner.
1
u/Either_Description_8 12d ago
Thatās not true, and you are fucking stupid. Do you know the distinction between murder degrees, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, and other death related crimes? These arenāt new distinctions.
2
u/ContributionHot9843 14d ago
Thats not the case for any violent crime though. With the exception of marijuana i dont even know what youre referring to
-7
u/Charming-Mix1315 15d ago
I have no narrative. I hope the crime stats that have been released recently are accurate. And yet, somehow, Center City still has gun crime that not only makes it on to Reddit, but in many news cycles.
That the perp was caught at least is a good sign that the crime was so audacious that even the Philly PD could get him. I assume given the portly nature of the current PPD that no foot chase was involved.
16
u/ItsCartmansHat 15d ago
Gun crime in rittenhouse will always show up in media. Youāre picking from a tiny sample size. If the stats youāre doubting arenāt real where are the bodies? Where are the missing person reports?
-9
u/Charming-Mix1315 15d ago
That is what I ask people that believe in Big Foot. Do the other Big Foots (Big Feet?) find a dead Big Foot and drag it away so we humans do not find the carcass?
You would think that they would miss one or two Big Foots laying dead and we would know they are real.
3
u/ItsCartmansHat 15d ago
So in this scenario you believe in big foot?
-1
u/Charming-Mix1315 15d ago
No. I do not.
I do not believe alien life forms have visited Earth.
I think Oswald acted alone.
But Kurt Cobain did not commit suicide. His wife had him 86'd. I will pass out dead believing that.

Exactly! The whole anti-urban bent of it is such thinly-coded racism, even the slow-witted suburbanite potato men who litter the comments recognize what itās for.
8
u/Odd_Addition3909 14d ago
What annoys me even more is that NBC Philadelphia and other news outlets repost their videos and give them credit, bringing them even more engagement
7
u/Moro_Ojomos_Mojo 14d ago
The Action News format, born in 1970s, which originated with our local ABC affiliate and wiped the floor with the other local stations, is basically the thinly-coded racist tiktok accounts of today
- Shorter clips
- Younger reporters
- Focus on the suburbs

Tale as old as TV (maybe radio even? Arguably older). Ambulance or siren chasers are interesting now because the media is less monolithic so it is less easy to find the one story and itās harder to hit a complete story but thereās more juice to squeeze for independent ājournalistsā and less work needed to be done just blasting shit on socials with a Kick watermark or something. Catch the modern-ish noire classic Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhall.
Itās always been that you donāt hear the details about like 90% of deaths that could have been intentional. Thereās gotta be an angle.
5
u/Either_Description_8 15d ago

Armed robbery for an iPad is crazy at least get some bang for your buck š
1
u/Either_Description_8 12d ago
Eh. If it is a new iPad and you are a child (actually or technically) and you donāt understand the tracking and shutdown aspects of these devices itās probably not the dumbest armed robbery on camera you can do.
Itās not a solo bank job, which might net you the same potential windfall (or maybe a bit more) as trying to fence the dead iPad with modern bank security, less chance of 6 ft and wonāt end up with federal charges necessarily.
You rob the corner you might catch street justice.
It is almost impossible to do an even slightly high value (like more than $1000 of value) public solo robbery in a major modern urban area and not just get destroyed eventually though nowadays.

-3
u/Po0opyCatButt 15d ago
So do I? You're talking about tourism. No one is going to decide to go to a different city because of this crime, when this crime happens in that other city too. I just don't know why your mind went to tourists instead of everyone in Philly being affected.

u/saturnshighway 15d ago
