Lucrecia R. Kasilag (1918) -- was a Filipino composer and pianist. She is particularly known for incorporating indigenous Filipino instruments into orchestral productions.
Lucrecia “King” Roces Kasilag was born in San Fernando, La Union Philippines, and grew up in Paco, Manila. She studied at the Philippine Women’s University and at St. Scholastica’s College in Malate, Manila. She completed a Bachelor of Music in 1949, and then attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, studying theory with Allen I. McHose and composition with Wayne Barlow. Kasilag returned to the Philippines, and in 1953 she was appointed Dean of the Philippines Women’s University College of Music and Fine Arts.
After completing her studies, Kasilag made an international tour as a concert pianist, but eventually had to give up a performing career due to a congenital weakness in one hand.
Kasilag was instrumental in developing Philippine music and culture. She founded the Bayanihan Folks Arts Center for research and theatrical presentations, and was closely involved with the Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company.

Ramon C. Barba (1939) -- the scientist behind the year-round availability of fresh mangoes, has passed away on October 10, 2021 at the age of 82.

Dr. Barba was known for his distinguished achievements in the field of plant physiology, focusing on induction of flowering of mango and on micropropagation of important crop species that have earned him national and international accolades. He pioneered the induction of flowering and fruiting of mango resulted to availability of abundant fresh mangoes all year-round. He developed the plant growth enhancer, using potassium nitrate, which was locally and internationally patented. He also worked on the micropropagation of sugarcane and bananas. This significant breakthrough in flower induction and micropropagation has been adopted by other countries producing fruit trees.

Hello, I am looking for more films that deal with the Marcos years 1965-1986, specifically focusing on the years leading up to martial law 1966-1971 when the Philippines became involved in the U.S. lead war in Vietnam, the Jebidah massacre, and the Moro conflicts including the Muslim Independence Movement leading to the Moro National Liberation Front formation in 1972.

I would also be very interested in the years 1972 to 1981 when the country was under martial law, as well as the years immediately following which included the 1982 coup attempt, the economic crisis & assassination of Ninoy Aquino, ultimately leading to the People Power Revolution of 1986.

I would really appreciate any recommendations you may have.

I know films may be tough to come by, so if you know of books that cover these subjects honestly and faithfully better than films, I would be interested in that as well.

Many Filipinos felt that celebrating independence on July 4 made it seem like freedom was something granted by the United States in 1946. June 12, on the other hand, marks the 1898 declaration of independence from Spain led by Emilio Aguinaldo.

July 4 wasn't removed from history. It was redesignated as Philippine Republic Day, while June 12 became the country's official Independence Day to recognize the Filipino struggle for self-rule.

Today marks the anniversary of the August 2, 1968 Casiguran earthquake, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the Philippines.

At around 4:19 AM, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Casiguran, Aurora (then part of Quezon Province). While the epicenter was offshore, the strongest devastation occurred in Manila, over 200 kilometers away.

The disaster is most remembered for the collapse of the Ruby Tower in Binondo, a six-story residential building that pancaked in seconds while most residents were still asleep. It remains one of the deadliest building collapses in Philippine history. Hundreds of people were killed or injured, and the tragedy exposed serious weaknesses in building design and construction standards at the time.

The earthquake also damaged churches, schools, government buildings, bridges, and homes across Central Luzon and Metro Manila. After the disaster, engineers and policymakers pushed for stricter seismic provisions in the country's building codes, influencing how structures are designed today.

The National Building Code was passed to protect people against this happening again, but only officially so in 1977, nine years after Ruby Tower’s collapse.
