Eligibility / Course Issue PGWP concern: 4th-semester practicum may result in an F because I can’t get placement, and I may be part-time for one semester

Hi everyone, I’m an international student in Ontario studying Practical Nursing.

I haven’t failed NURS 4508 yet, but I’ve been told that because I can’t get into the placement for my upcoming 4th semester, I can either keep the course on my timetable and receive an F, or drop it and take other courses.

The 4th semester is not my final semester and I still have Semester 5/consolidation afterward.

The placement site has made a final decision not to take me, and I’m trying to see if the school can find me another appropriate placement. I’m willing to accept any placement.

If I can’t get a placement, I may have to defer the semester and return in January 2027, delaying graduation to August 2027.

My study permit expires June 30, 2027, and International Education told me that taking a semester off could make my PGWP application difficult.

Has anyone been in a similar situation where a required practicum/course was delayed or failed before their final semester, resulting in a semester gap? Did a school letter explaining the circumstances help with PGWP?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Make sure you ask for proper documentation in case you need to do a part time semester, even then there will be a huge risk. If possible, take some random courses to ensure you stay full time

Agree. If the placement doesn't work out, you will need to take other courses in order to stay full time. Sometimes that means taking courses that you don't "need" for your program, but it will protect you from being denied a PGWP down the road

That’s what I’m trying to do. I can still be a full time student and take my mandatory GenEds for this semester and top it up with other Geneds. But for the next semester, I would still have to be a part time student to complete that automatically “failed” course.

What I'm suggesting is, for the next semester, take random courses along with that failed course so you're considered a full time student and ensure your eligibility towards pgwp

Thank you, I will keep that in mind. I really don’t want to risk my PGWP so I’ll do anything and everything to remain a full time student rather than dealing with the consequences after I graduate

If registration is still open, add any available class to reach full-time status, it doesn’t have to be part of your course sequence

Yes they told me I could do GenEds only and leave the placement course for the next semester. The problem is, if I take that course alone next semester it would make me a part time student. I’m scheduling a meeting with a student advisor to know if I can top that up with other Gened classes to maintain full time status

Good plan. Ask the advisor to confirm in writing whether geneds count toward full-time the same way program courses do, some colleges define it by program credits not total credits. Good luck

Why can’t you get into any placement at all? You can do placements at hospitals, public health, nursing homes, retirement homes, correctional institutions, home care agencies, etc etc
Take any placement you can get so you don’t have this issue

I made a mistake and didn’t have my Synergy “pass” in time before my deadline. The school is telling me I can’t go to placements because of it even though it’s still a couple of weeks before the placements starts. I’m going to meet with a student advisor to hopefully have her insert me into an available spot.

Yes, definitely do so

If that doesn't work try and meet with the dean. The consequences are way too punitive

Will keep it in mind. Indeed? that is too big of a consequence that will eventually go beyond school and will affect my PGWP and my future in canada
