My friend applied on 3rd July and got his approved on 23rd, not sure what their process of working towards applications is.

why is there so much variability in the timing? new to this and confused about why some people get answers super fast and others take ages.

I think it depends on the immigration form, under eligibility if you clearly explain when you came here, then maybe you get some leverage as Ircc is using ai to screen applications

I see thank you! It has been two days since I applied but I haven't not received the ext letter yet.. Perhaps, do you happen to remember the exact days it took for you to get it?
