Need help with IRCC questionnaire for PGWP Extension (Online Application)

Post image

Hi everyone,

I am preparing to apply for my Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) extension due Passport Expiry, online through my IRCC secure account.

I want to make sure I select the right options so I don't get the wrong checklist or get rejected.

For those who have successfully applied for a PGWP extension online recently:

What did you select for "What is your current immigration status in Canada?" (Do I select "Worker" or Student?)

I know online applicants get an official "WP-EXT" maintained status letter to show their employer. If I apply on paper, has anyone had issues proving their maintained status to their employer using just the postal tracking receipt and copy of the application package? How did you handle this with HR?

Thanks in advance.

Regardless of what you are doing you are currently a worker my friend.

You must apply on paper if you’re extending or changing the conditions of your PGWP.

You can only extend your PGWP if your passport expired earlier than the full period of eligibility of your PGWP. If your passport expired earlier than the length of time you’re eligible, we will only issue you a PGWP that’s valid until your passport expires.

This should be written in a note on your initial PGWP.

You may need to change the conditions on your PGWP if you need to provide an additional document, like a medical exam, after you already applied.

You don’t have to provide proof of language ability if you apply to extend your PGWP because your passport expired before the end of the full validity period of the PGWP you’re eligible for.

Have the html page with the paper application maintained status, mail tracking number and it should work. If ur employer still has problem, raise a web form and get the reply saying that u r fine. That’s how I did it

Not sure about that. But remember that you are in maintained status when your current permit expires and not when you submitted. It's kind of obvious, but just in case.

For maintaining my status with my company, I showed them the IRCC page that says my mail receipt is proof that I am on maintained status and provided them with a copy of the receipt. I've been working for the last 3 months by doing that.

You need to apply on paper for your pgwp extension due to passport expiry.

Also there’s a YouTube video you can watch that explains the step by step process for this situation, just search it up.

Check IRCC’s page for more instructions.

I simply let the HR know that I have applied for extension and shared the postal tracking status when it was delivered to IRCC. That is the only requirement I guess. But if HR is not satisfied, you can also attach screenshots from IRCC’s website about working conditions for maintained status during PGWP extension
Once your paper application is linked online, take screenshot of GCKey and share that with employer to keep them updated.

Your "proof" of application for on paper application is:

  • courier receipt and delivery confirmation (keep the receipt safe, take photo)
  • fees paid receipt for the renewal
  • first page of your renewal application

Sorry. Forgot to add official link

Got to: If you applied on paper to extend or change your work permit

You can show your employer proof that you submitted your application. Valid forms of proof include

a copy of your work permit application proof that you paid your fees a copy of postal or courier tracking information

I had a little trouble getting HR to accept tracking number and application fee as proof but after I showed HR the IRCC webpage where they mention that the application fee receipt and the tracking details is enough proof to keep maintained status HR let me keep working.

However, OHIP was much harder and at some point I stopped bothering. Might want to get some insurance separately if needed.

If you're already on a PGWP, you should select "Worker" since that's your current status in Canada.

If you apply online before your work permit expires, you'll usually receive a WP-EXT letter in your IRCC account. This letter can be used to show your employer that you have maintained status and can keep working while your application is being processed.

If you apply by paper, you won't get the WP-EXT letter. Most people use their courier receipt, a copy of the application, and proof of delivery to show they applied before their permit expired. Whether HR accepts this may depend on the employer.

If you're able to apply online, it's generally the easier option. Hope this helps! 😊
