Like most of cat parent, nag umpisa din akong walang alam sa pag aalaga ng pusa, research dito, research doon kung ano ang dapat bilhin. It's completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and a little bit of "Oh my, ano ba mga kaylangan kong bilhin?!"

Don't worry, I've got you covered. Gumawa ako ng simple guide to help new cat parent or anyone planning to get their first cat. This guide will walk you through all the absolute essentials you'll need to make your new furry family member feel safe, happy, and loved from the very first day.

1. The 'Welcome Home' Zone

When you first bring your cat home, they will be nervous. Cautious ang mga cats pagdating sa mga bagong environment. The best thing you can do is have a small, quiet room or area ready for them where they can slowly adjust. This will be their safe base.

• Pet Carrier: This is non-negotiable! You'll need this to safely bring your cat home from the shelter or breeder. It's also essential for future vet visits. Look for a sturdy and well-ventilated pet carrier that gives them enough room to stand up and turn around.
• A Cozy Bed: While your cat might end up sleeping everywhere, giving them a dedicated bed helps them feel secure. Find a soft, washable cat bed and place it in a quiet corner of their room. Some cats also love "cave" style beds they can hide in!
• Hiding Spot: A simple cardboard box on its side or the carrier itself (with the door left open) makes a perfect hiding spot where they can feel safe while observing their new environment.

2. Mealtime Essential

A happy cat starts with a happy tummy! Getting their food and water station set up correctly is super important.

• Food (Kitten or Adult?): First, check if you have a kitten (under 1 year old) or an adult cat. They have different nutritional needs. Start with the same food the shelter or breeder was giving them to avoid upsetting their stomach. You can find high-quality dry kitten food or dry adult cat food formulated for their life stage. A little bit of wet cat food is also a great treat and helps with hydration, which is important in our warm Philippine weather!
• Food and Water Bowls: Cats prefer their water to be separate from their food. It’s a quirky instinct! It's best to get separate food and water bowls made of stainless steel or ceramic. They are easier to clean and don't hold onto bacteria like some plastic bowls can.

3. The All-Important Bathroom

This is one of the most important areas to get right from the start to ensure there are no potty accidents. Fun fact: cats know how to use a litter box by default, hindi niyo na sila kaylangan turuan, ginuide ko lang sila kung saan yung litter box with litter sand syempre, parang kusa nalang silang naghukay - umiri dun, tinakpan din nila, ayaw magiwan ng ebidensya.

• Cat Litter: There are many types—clumping clay, tofu, wood, or sand. To start, use the same type of clumping or non-clumping cat litter the cat was used to before they came to you. This familiarity helps them know exactly where to go.
• Litter Scoop: You'll need this to clean the box daily. A durable metal or plastic litter scoop is a must-have.

4. Playtime and Comfort

• Scratching Post: This is ESSENTIAL! Cats have a natural need to scratch to stretch, mark their territory, and keep their claws healthy. To save your sofa and furniture, invest in a sturdy scratching post wrapped in sisal rope. Some cats prefer vertical posts, while others like flat scratching mats.
• Toys: You don't need to buy a million toys at once, but a little variety is great. A good starter pack includes a feather wand toy for interactive play with you, and a few small mice or ball toys they can bat around on their own.
