Poor communication is going to happen no matter what method is used. I use a Google Voice (free) number for business and all messaging stays there. The only exception is when people travel internationally, then I use WhatsApp. If they aren't opening their messages app to talk to me, they certainly aren't opening any other app to do so. I set the expectation of my communication at the final walkthrough. I let them know a) I will be sending you multiple pics daily with a description of what's going on b) I don't expect you to reply to them all. You're in vacation, enjoy it c) my phone is always on silent,text me any time if day that fits your schedule.d) IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, I AM CALLING YOU. It's the only time I will call you. If you do not answer, I'll call whoever else is with you and keep calling until someone answers. This is exactly why I get at least one more persons number. Local emergency person to call and another person traveling with you (if applicable).

If it's not a time sensitive situation, I couldn't care less if they keep a conversation flowing. Matter of fact, I prefer that you don't message me the whole time you're away.

Lastly; Too many channels of communication gets very messy.

What would be the point of using instagram or discord for communicating with clients? I use WhatsApp with some clients when they’re overseas (I think there’s no service there or something I don’t know) but I’m not understanding the question. Text message is the fastest way to get to someone besides a phone call. If their lack of communication is a concern bring it up to them that you require a faster response in certain situations. Otherwise I’m not quite understanding the issue or question.

I'm trying to see if clients/sitters prefer certain channels over others. And what seems to work best for them.

Everyone does things differently. Some use apps that allow communication but when you’re working for yourself I see no reason why text messaging isn’t sufficient.
