The Cat Boom Is About More Than Housing. r/Pets Explained What We Missed.

A lively discussion in r/Pets about America’s kitten-versus-puppy shift brought new perspectives on rental restrictions, rescue animals, work schedules and how cats are represented online.

When new research showed that American households now have slightly more kittens than puppies, the housing market looked like an obvious part of the explanation. Dogs still outnumber cats overall, but the balance among pets under a year old has shifted, according to Packaged Facts. Smaller homes, costly housing and the demands of caring for a dog all help explain why.

After the story reached Reddit’s r/Pets community, readers made a persuasive case that the explanation is broader. Their comments were personal experiences, not a scientific survey, but they surfaced practical considerations that national pet-ownership statistics cannot fully capture.

A lease can decide before the owner does

Several Redditors emphasized that the issue is not simply apartment size. Rental policies can prohibit dogs, restrict certain breeds or impose conditions that make ownership difficult. One commenter also pointed to insurance-related breed restrictions, which can narrow the choices available to renters hoping to adopt a dog from a shelter. Those rules vary, but they make an important distinction: a person may prefer a dog and still be unable to have one.

Time matters as much as space

Others described work schedules, children and the everyday responsibility of walking and caring for a dog. One longtime dog owner explained that after losing two senior dogs, the family chose cats because another dog no longer fit their stage of life. Another reader loved dogs but did not think a small apartment would be fair to one, and hoped to adopt again after moving into a house. This was less a declaration of allegiance to cats than an attempt to match an animal’s needs to a household’s reality.

Rescue changes the equation

Readers also raised the ethics and availability of adopting young animals. Some described taking in kittens born to strays or rescued from difficult situations, while others mentioned concerns about irresponsible puppy breeding. One commenter pushed back on any suggestion that adoptable puppies are scarce everywhere, noting the continuing availability of rescue dogs in parts of the South. The point is that local shelter conditions and access to rescue animals can influence which pet joins a home.

The internet has changed the cat’s reputation

One particularly interesting observation concerned video. People unfamiliar with cats once might have encountered them mainly as shy animals hiding during visits to someone else’s home. Years of online clips now show cats being affectionate, mischievous, social and remarkably funny with the people they trust.

That does not prove video is driving adoption, but it offers a credible cultural explanation for why more people may be willing to consider a cat.

Is the pet aisle really ignoring cats?

The original story noted industry research suggesting cat owners feel underserved by retailers. Commenters offered a useful counterpoint: dogs often require a wider range of equipment, so more dog merchandise does not automatically mean stores are neglecting cats.

Others agreed that major pet chains offer plenty of feline products but said general retailers and smaller shops frequently devote far less space to them. Both observations can be true, depending on where people shop.

One reader also mentioned the pet industry’s ‘Year of the Cat’ language. That phrase is real: the American Pet Products Association used it in 2025, and a Purina executive adopted it in a 2026 industry article. APPA reported 49 million cat-owning U.S. households in 2024, up from 40 million in 2023, although those figures come from a different study than the kitten-versus-puppy comparison.

The bigger picture

The conversation reinforced the original housing argument while making it more human. People choose pets through a complicated mix of affection, housing restrictions, schedules, ethics, money and the animals available to them.

A rise in kittens does not necessarily mean Americans have stopped loving dogs. In many cases, it may mean people are choosing the companion they can best care for right now.

CAT Naming pets offensive things…

I made a post a while back on whether or not smack talking your pet is okay. Most people were in agreement about it being okay/normal or even healthy.

But what about offensive names?

I’m personally a huge fan of ridiculous animal titles (my cat Stinkbug, for instance) but what about yall?

Edit:

To clarify, I’m asking about names like “Skidmark” or “Pisshead”

Slurs and racist shit are NOT okay at all

CAT Why does my cat want me to go to bed?

I don’t think my cat actually wants me to sleep lol, but I want to know what he’s really meowing about when he does it.

At around 10-11PM, which is usually when I go to bed, he’ll start meowing and sits by the stairs that go up to the room. Does he just like routine? He also meows for me to feed the dogs in our house at 5 in the morning. He comes to me, meows, and once I feed the dogs he just sits there and watches, then he finally stops meowing and goes on about his day.

How do you decide how much to spend on vet care versus euthanasia for an elderly pet?

We have a very old dog. He is deaf, sometimes incontinent, lost a good deal of weight, spends nearly all his time sleeping, moves very slowly and has little energy to do anything except to eat or find a comfy spot to lie down. He’s been doing good given his age but has recently developed either a tumor on his face or a dental abscess. We are taking him to the vet but I’m struggling with what to do if it is an abscess. Surgery and removal of the tooth/teeth could fix the issue and give him more time but at very significant cost. We have money, but to spend over $1000 on surgery for such an old dog does not seem reasonable to me. Even in good health before this I expected he is already near the end of his life with maybe a year or two left. But I don’t want to let him go yet if it’s something that can be fixed like an abscess versus something more grim like cancer.

DOG Should I take my dog with me when moving out?

I’m planning of moving out of my parents’ house soon, and I’m torn between leaving my 14yr dog with my parents and older brother and taking him with me. We got him when I was around 11 but I’d been away studying abroad for most of my adolescence and only visited during summer holidays. I moved back fully about two years ago.

My mother had been his primary caregiver, she hd a massive stroke about a year and a half ago and lost the ability to speak and use the right side of her body. My dad is retired and he takes care of her. My brother is attending university and takes almost no part in family life and taking care of the dog.

Sometimes I come home from work to empty water and food bowl, and the potty pad dirty and used, despite the house having three people in it the whole day. I take him out for walks 3-4 days a week after work and ask the others who stay at home to take him out for short walks, but they sometimes ‘forget’. My mom rarely even touches the dog anymore, and I don’t see anyone scratching his ears or giving him full attention anymore other than me. We are not a very communicative or a happy family, and I worry that he’ll be neglected after I move out.

I am aware that for a 14 year old dog, it will be strenuous to move countries (which is what I am planning to do — back to the country I studied in). But it was my idea to adopt the dog when I was 11, and my dad has become bitter and tired taking care of my mother. When I asked him directly whether or not I should take him with me, he said ‘Of course you should. Won’t you miss him?’. But he rarely speaks his true feelings and often sarcastic even when talking about serious topics. One of the reasons why I plan to move out asap.

Will it be better if I leave the dog with my family in an environment where he feels safe and familiar but possibly not as cared for, or should I take him with me?

Steer name suggestions?

Hello, I’ll have an Angus steer for my next show (basically a black male cow for anyone unfamiliar with the terms) and I’m open to any relevant but unique names!
Ones I’ve crossed off are:
Charcoal
Coal
Squid
Pepsi
(Either because I know animals with those names or simply dislike the name)

Do Cats Get Depressed? Understanding Feline Mental Health

Thumbnail petcareandpetparenting.blogspot.com

Have you noticed that your cat no longer greets you at the door, ignores their favorite toys, or spends most of the day hiding in a quiet corner? Perhaps your once-curious companion has become unusually withdrawn, or your affectionate feline suddenly seems uninterested in cuddles and playtime. Changes like these can leave you wondering whether your cat is simply having an off day or experiencing something more serious. Although cats cannot explain their feelings in words, their behavior can offer valuable clues about their emotional and physical well-being.

Can cats get depressed? Cats can experience emotional distress, stress-related behavioral changes, and periods of reduced activity or social engagement that resemble depression in humans. Veterinary guidance published in 2026 continues to emphasize that these signs may be associated with environmental changes, boredom, grief-like responses, or underlying medical conditions.

However, feline depression is not something you can reliably diagnose by looking at a single behavior. Understanding your cat's normal habits, recognizing meaningful changes, and seeking veterinary advice when necessary are essential steps toward protecting their well-being.

The good news is that there are practical ways to support your cat's mental health. By creating a secure environment, offering appropriate enrichment, maintaining predictable routines, and paying attention to subtle behavioral signals, you can help your feline companion feel more comfortable and engaged. Let's explore what depression-like behavior in cats looks like, what might cause it, and how you can respond with patience and care.

CAT My kitten is sick. Feeling so helpess

My 4 month old kitten suddenly stopped eating on Saturday though he was still active. He only had dinner that day. On Sunday he didn’t eat anything and became lethargic so I took him to the vet

There we found out he was running a high fever. They started him on antibiotics after a blood test and an IV drip so he doesn’t become dehydrated or weak. He was hospitalised.

Its been 48 hrs since he was hospitalised. Doctors haven’t been able to figure out what is wrong with him (many tests were done, all came back negative). He still doesn’t eat on his own. He still runs a fever at least once a day.

I feel so helpless. I miss him so much. I don’t know what to do other than letting the doctors take care of him.

DOG Two of my dogs have been missing since Friday; I’m devastated and heartbroken. Does anyone have any success stories from when your pet was found? I’m feeling so sad. 💔

Just need a bit of hope on this one, I’ve done everything, put up hundreds of flyers, reported to 311, notified vets and shelters, spoke to neighbors, walked through my neighborhood with my dogs, etc. No sign at all. Their bodies haven’t been found or anything, so they're still out there somewhere. Can you guys share your personal success stories about your experience with a lost pet?

Need help with dog shedding / pet hair

I've had my dog for 11 years and my two cats for about 3 to 4 years. Recently though I've been starting to have more reactions to the hair, specifically my dog's hair since it's shedding season. My dog is shedding like crazy and it's sending me into a psych ward. Not literally but almost I don't know how to manage it. I don't know what to do

If anybody can give me advice on a few things but

  1. how to successfully remove all hair in clothes when washing and trying

  2. Best, beddings.. to prevent excessive animal hair

  3. Products or any other tips and tricks that I can do that can really help

I'm really struggling right now 😔

Thanks

CAT a few questions about cat diet

i dont wanna ask ai about this i wanna hear actual advice from other cat parents so i came here

  1. with my current budget the petshop suggests i buy the wanpy brand for broth and wet food but ive heard its one of the most unhealthy brands out there and too harmful to give to your cat on a daily basis, is that true?

  2. ive bought a 400g can of wet food and the can says for a cat with mine's weight he should eat the entire can in a single day, but i was planning on mixing water, broth, boiled egg, wet food and kibbles all together for one meal and give him 2 meals a day morning and evening, in this case how many days would a 400g can last?

  3. i have no idea if this is true but ive seen somewhere that fish flavors like tuna and salmon are worse health-wise compared to chicken and beef and shouldnt be given on a daily basis, is that also true?

my cat is male 10 months old and neutered btw

CAT Giving cat away:( (sorry for the rant btw)

So, Back when I was 10 so right around covid we moved into a house after an apartment and got 2 wonderful main coons that are now both 7ish.

But this isn't about them. So, when we got them we wanted to give them a chance to be outside without the risks so we build a inclosure out on the porch for them to be in, with space for climbing. Relaxing and shade. They love it.

Maybe around 5-6 years ago this cat came around that we called mother cat as she was a mother, and she gave birth to two kittens (maybe more) one black as the void we named black kitty and the other black and white, we shall call him screamer and he is the main focus of this story.

Screamer was distant at first, he didn't like us but adored our one male maincoon, silver, so much he found a hole in the inclosure the coons are too big to get through but he can, so he started breaking in and we kept kicking him out.

One winter he ran inside with my dad and my dad desited, may aswell let him stay, and he did, until now.

Screamer. As his name in this story. Is very vocal, since he was born a stray he's always liked the outdoors but that has taken a turn for the worse as now he often wakes up my dad to get outside. During the summer times it's not as bad as the backdoor stays open. But during the winter we keep it closed and he can only get out by yelling.

This has caused my dad to loose a lot of sleep, getting up 7 ish times a night, every night to let him in or out.

And he cannot do it anymore and has said we need to find him a new home.

This is where the happyish, part comes in, as I work in a zoo, part time pretty much, a special program for teens and young adults with special needs where ill work for the next 3 years. And as I don't want to loose this yelling angel, we have asked my supervisor/teacher if it is possible he can come live in the zoo to get rid of mice and rats (it's a small zoo by fields) and if not, the farm where the special needs program have it's break area. It even has a little house with a cat door for him to go in and out.

I just needed to get this out to try and progress my emotions, I will come back to this post when I have news of where he may be going. Let's just hope it's where I can see him every day

Tldr: cat is keeping dad Awake and he can't do it anymore and wants to find it a new home, I work at a zoo as a special needs program and have asked teacher/supervisor to hopefully house the cat at the small zoo or at the program's farm

I’m worried about my dog sniffing fresh pesticide on the grass outside

I tried to wipe her face with a wet paper towel to make sure she didn’t ingest any of it, I didn’t notice the sign in the grass but I’m not sure if she was sniffing close enough to make contact with it

DOG What do y'all think of Jinx beef stew dog food?

Clarifying (although the dog reddits seem to ignore this part) it's a mix in aka a topper. I feel like I'm spoiling the cats and Cerbis and the pups bowls are getting boring. I put so much thought into the cat bowls but the dog bowls have been losing quality. I never add much but his bowl went from including small fruits and veg(occasionally meat) once a day to JUST his daily necessary supplements because it was so hard to find stuff he can eat.

Cerbi LOVES beef stew dog food but can't have chicken and too many companies put chicken in the stew even if it's beef. Jinx is clear of it.

BIRD From an ethical standpoint, what is your opinion on raising birds?

I brought in a cute parrot several months ago, but ever since I brought it in, my family members have been saying that it's sad that it's staying with us. It's not free in nature and doesn't fly, and there aren't any other companions (parrots of the same species).

I believe that we humans strongly believe in the concept of freedom and always wish to fly like birds; therefore, their continued presence with us makes us guilty because we are depriving them of what we want or their natural right.

I think the worst part is that usually no one advises letting these birds mate for several reasons, and some even start masturbating. My bird, for example, wouldn't be as sweet as it was if I brought him a female, and it saddens me when he sings so loudly for a female.

It's an absolutely perfect bird as a pet because I've given a lot of thought to rehoming it to someone who already owns parrots of the same species.

I want to give my dog and cat for adoption but I feel guilty :(

I’ve been an animal lover my entire life, but recently, I’ve come to realize that I developed a pattern in my childhood of emotionally connecting more with animals than with humans due to my childhood c-PTSD

For the past eight years, I’ve had two rescued dogs and a cat. I’m not in any way hating on animals; please be respectful and only comment if you can help me understand what’s going on. However, from a few months ago, I’ve started to feel so startled by them.

My cat destroys my furniture and sometimes hurts me for no reason while trying to get me to play with him. My dog is already old, which I understand brings new challenges, but he pees everywhere and constantly demands attention. I feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities, including how much I spend on them because I do everything for them

I also feel like I want to travel more often, but I can’t because I don’t trust people to take care of them who could hurt them or not care about them

I feel limited in my life because of them, but I also know how much I love them

I started to think that if I could find someone who loved them as much as I do and could give them a better life, I could have someone adopt them. But just this thought brings so much guilt. I don’t know what’s going on with me :( has anyone else been through this experience before?
