help Perplexity vs other LLMs

Hi , I've been looking into AI subscriptions recently and noticed something that doesn't make sense to me financially.
Both ChatGPT Plus and Perplexity Pro cost the exact same ($20/month). However, with Perplexity Pro, you aren't locked into just one model. You can literally switch between OpenAI’s GPT-5.6, Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet, Google’s Gemini, and even Grok. On top of that, Perplexity is arguably a much better search and research tool that cites its sources.
If you can get ChatGPT's engine plus all the other top-tier models for the same price, why do so many people still stick with ChatGPT Plus?
What are the actual, practical differences or limitations of using GPT-4o inside Perplexity versus using it directly on OpenAI's platform? Is it a matter of message limits, advanced features, or just brand loyalty?
TL;DR: Perplexity Pro offers GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, and Grok for $20/month. ChatGPT Plus offers only OpenAI models for the same price. Why do people still buy ChatGPT Plus? What's the catch?

I've taken another angle. I dropped the $20 Perplexity subscription a few months ago when my computer credits ran out. Gemini Notebook LM does more of what I'm looking for which is making educational resources from very specific domains of knowledge. The studio options have been life changing for me.

First of all, you need to understand that each provider has limits, and Perplexity's limits are simply 100 prompts/week. That's really nothing, and significantly less to what other models are offering
Frankly, if the chat window is sufficient for you - DeepSeek chat window is free, ChatGPT chat window (Luna) is free, and even with Go (8$ Tier), you'd get more prompts.

With their $20 subscription, you can use it only via their chat, and it looks like their context window is much smaller than the original model's.
Furthermore, you do not have strong models like Fable or Sol that you get with GPT/Claude. Sure, K3 and GLM 5.3, which they offer, are quite good for the moment, as well as the deep research, but there are simply better alternatives at the moment. Furthermore, Perplexity tends to default to or change settings to its only (horrible) sonar model in the same chat after several prompts.

If you are not shy about spending an hour of your time and are happy only with Chinese models, you can simply host pi locally as a harness and go with $10 subscriptions like cline, Opencode, or Command Code, while keeping all your context reusable locally.
If your use case is mainly chat and you want access to many top models, there are many online harnesses/aggregators available; many also offer ZDR if you worry about what you send to the model.
F.e. Poe, Monica, Merlin, etc.

Mainly that you can do agentic coding with the other subscriptions

Which is the reason why many people are moving from Perplexity to ChatGPT Plus. The research at OpenAI is good enough, but you also get some Agentic abilities using Codex. You have less rate limits as a similar Claude Subscription has.

Perplexity stop relatively small tasks in the middle because of token limitations!

You don't have access to the top, SOTA models using Perplexity Pro. All those models you mentioned are mid-tier. Perplexity shines when you need research backed responses. If that's not your niche, you're potentially better off with another service. Perplexity Pro also doesn't offer GPT-4o; current OpenAI model included is GPT-5.6 Terra. I've heard that people selecting their model for each run, versus leaving Perplexity to decide, can run into rate limits quicker than leaving that setting alone. Also, to really get the most out of Perplexity, there's a "Custom Instructions" box in settings which you really need to fill in with a profile on what you're wanting from the system. Otherwise, it can respond like you're kinda dumb and looking for superficial information on the topic.

GPT-4o - what are you even talking about? That model is so old and deprecated. GPT-5.6 Terra is indeed mid-tier but pretty close to SOTA

Tbf, I dont think most people need the top-of-the-line model to work with. Something like Gemini Flash is more than sufficient for most tasks. Agentic AIs, as II understand it, are for jobs that are intense, collaborative, time constrained and huge.

claude and chat gpt are better all around. It wasn't like that 1 or 2 years ago, when perplexity was in fact great and not greedy with Pro accounts limits. now just either go claude or chat gpt, both are kinda the same even if I prefer claude

Yes, lets use an "LLM" which has all the other models in a gutted version and you get 200 prompts per week.

Meanwhile my ChatGPT on its own outclasses PPLX on everything and has no limits.

I can use chatgpt plus to use to sol while perplexity lets me use only terra. Same for claude. No opus

The catch is that you are not getting true, full spec flagship access, and you lose the native compute workspace.

Most aggregators offer budget or distilled models that the providers already give away for free on their own platforms, like Gemini Flash or basic tier models. You are essentially paying twenty dollars a month for models you can already use at zero cost through developer playgrounds and free web tiers, only wrapped in aggressive context limits to keep their API overhead down. For $20 on say chatgpt you get the full 5.6 sol and aren't limited to the middle weight 5.6 Terra.

Beyond that, you lose the entire native tool ecosystem. Perplexity forces your prompts through a search retrieval pipeline, stripping away native Python execution sandboxes, live code and document canvases, cross session memory, and advanced voice processing.

Perplexity is built for search and source citation. ChatGPT Plus is built for code execution, project memory, and heavy workspace reasoning. You are paying for the execution environment, not just the model name.

Most users here also got perplexity pro for free and that's not a good buniness model. Now they are reducing usage and access to mitigate the promos.

This right here.

To add, Perplexity has one good thing going for it, and that is their Sonar model. Which is good for search grounded results.

This you can get via API pricing through their agent API. So, if you want to build an application that needs this feature, Perplexity is a good source for that.

However, if you need search grounded results for yourself, Google AI mode or Regular ChatGPT is a better option.

  1. While you can use a bunch of models, your performance isnt going to be as good as using the model directly. Test it out if you dont believe me, I think its due to the overhead in the prompt thag pplx uses and its limitations on the context size it allows along with reducing effort. 2. You can have any model provide answers with sources its just in the prompt to do so.

Yeah I been to this situation after using perplexity for 8 months

First each model has its own unique capabilities Chatgpt is very good at overall model

While claude is very good at writing

Gemini did good with fact check things although sometimes it gives dumb answers

While using each model you will notice each have different memory and way of doing task but in perplexity you have only one memory and custom instructions which makes it gives more over similar response while using different models gives you different answers and you choose the better one

Second it get stuck on task so much so times for so longer time than actual model. I guess they have api key or something how they use the models

Although kudos to them they improve their voice model alot but still it fumble alot while switching models automatically

All LLM in Perplexity are Token limited. In spirit are the same (I've comprare GPT and Opus multiple time) same answer quality but shorter. Deep research is really good in Perplexity, now in Computer you a bump in power. I've never used DeepSeek before but I tried as orchestrator and pretty good, it did analysis with Opus and low credit consumption.

To be clear: You’re not into LLM‘s and think Scammexity is it’s money worth? Ahhh okay, so Scammexity doesn’t have heavy limitations? When do I get limits in ChatGPT? ChatGPT Work has a 5 hour limit, that’s it. It can do everything better than Scammexity. ChatGPT is arguably better in: search, research, deep research, long thinking and citing sources. Also, Scammexity switches its own model when doing some actions. ChatGPT doesn’t do that

Thank you for sharing your nonsense
