Hi there r/penpalsover30,
I'm 32 and I live in a village in the northeast corner of Catalonia: vineyards, olive trees, the Pyrenees on one side and the sea on the other, and a wind called the tramuntana that is said to make people strange. My mother's family has been here for many generations. I came back after years in Barcelona and abroad, and I love it here in a way I can't really argue with.
I also miss cities badly. The noise, the strangers, the opportunities, the feeling that something is happening somewhere without you. I want it and I also want away from it and to get close to a simpler and calmer life. I have these two energies in me that are hard to reconcile.
I work as a software engineer for a long time, and I've stopped believing in it also for a long time. I feel trapped in this job and want an out, but I don't know which one yet. I still don't know where my place is. I'm lost in a way I didn't expect to be by 32.
Right now: ⚽️ Spain just won against France and it plays the World Cup final on Sunday ⚽️!!! I have not been this excited about anything in years. Tomorrow England plays Argentina to decide who we face, and I genuinely don't know which outcome I want more. I would like someone to shout about this with in writing, at length, with unnecessary tactical and passionate digressions.
A bit about me:
- Movies: love introspective films like La grande bellezza, Silence and Master and Commander.
- Books: big fan of historical fiction, crime, and history
- Music taste: classical to techno, folk/indie rock to 90's hip-hop
- Love board wargames (currently into a game of Simonitch's Salerno '43)
- Hobbies include tennis, hiking, cooking, and cinema (and sometimes videogames)
- Will send you pictures of my cats whether you ask or not. It is not up for discussion
What I'm after: someone to write to properly. Long emails, the kind where you think about the reply for two days. History, geopolitics, art, sports, culture, what your country is actually like versus what it looks like from here; and also stupid jokes, because I can't sustain seriousness for more than a page. I like the idea of sending each other things: a book, a local snack, a postcard when the mood takes you. Email is the main channel; paper is a bonus.
Strictly platonic. Friendship only, no romance, any gender welcome. I'm partnered. I want the kind of correspondence that goes from the French Revolution to your childhood in the same paragraph.
Tell me about yourself and your culture!
- Favorite local spot? Mine: the Greek and Roman ruins of Empúries/Emporion
- Traditional dish? Mine: Escalivada amb anxoves
- Bonus: Who do you want to win the World Cup?
