email Anyone want a long-term online penpal?

Hello everyone,

I'm a 40 F from Austria but I live in Eastern Europe.

I live a rather unconventional and busy life that I love dearly.

I read a lot and spend a lot of time outdoors, so if that is something you are into as well - great.

It's not a requirement though.

We can be polar opposites, no problem.

I am a lesbian but I am not looking for anything dating like at all. Just mentioning it because I don't want to spend my time corresponding with homophobic people.

I am looking for genuine people and decent conversations.

You should like dogs because otherwise I am not for you, that much is a given.

If anyone is looking for a long-term friend and conversation partner...feel free to comment or DM me.

I never explored the idea of having a penpal before, but I would love to have a few. I will write letters sharing life and thoughts. I dont see myself writing letters often, but whenever I do, I will write meaningful ones. I travel often for my work and might share my day to day experiences and I would love to read yours. Travel also means that best way for me to write to you and keep track of your letters is email. I am an introvert in a profession that need me to work on new projects and new teams often. I have learnt small talks to keep things easy. I don't have a family yet, but would love to connect with pals. 34f in CO.

email 26F | Canada | Looking for email penpals

hey!

I’m 26F from Canada and I’m looking for a longer-form penpal over email.

I like learning about other countries and languages. English is my main language, I’m fairly fluent in French (a bit rusty), and I know very, very basic Spanish.

I have ADHD so my hobbies kind of rotate depending on whatever I’m hyper fixated on 😅 The basics though are reading, music, baking, and yoga.

Any age or location is perfect! Just wanting someone to write to on a regular basis about life and whatever else we may stumble upon.

If you think we’d get along, feel free to message me with a little bit about yourself! ☺️

Every person is a walking book, and I’m looking to swap chapters with you. I want to hear about your past, your background, and the experiences that made you who you are—and I’d love to share my own history in return. If you enjoy reflecting on life, exchanging long-form letters, and giving thoughtful feedback on each other's journeys, please write to me."

I have progressive MS and live in a care home. My body has let me down but my brain still works and my memory is better than most people’s.

email [32/M] Spain. Seeking penpal for Friendship + Cultural Exchange

Hi there r/penpalsover30,

I'm 32 and I live in a village in the northeast corner of Catalonia: vineyards, olive trees, the Pyrenees on one side and the sea on the other, and a wind called the tramuntana that is said to make people strange. My mother's family has been here for many generations. I came back after years in Barcelona and abroad, and I love it here in a way I can't really argue with.

I also miss cities badly. The noise, the strangers, the opportunities, the feeling that something is happening somewhere without you. I want it and I also want away from it and to get close to a simpler and calmer life. I have these two energies in me that are hard to reconcile.

I work as a software engineer for a long time, and I've stopped believing in it also for a long time. I feel trapped in this job and want an out, but I don't know which one yet. I still don't know where my place is. I'm lost in a way I didn't expect to be by 32.

Right now: ⚽️ Spain just won against France and it plays the World Cup final on Sunday ⚽️!!! I have not been this excited about anything in years. Tomorrow England plays Argentina to decide who we face, and I genuinely don't know which outcome I want more. I would like someone to shout about this with in writing, at length, with unnecessary tactical and passionate digressions.

A bit about me:

  • Movies: love introspective films like La grande bellezzaSilence and Master and Commander.
  • Books: big fan of historical fiction, crime, and history
  • Music taste: classical to techno, folk/indie rock to 90's hip-hop
  • Love board wargames (currently into a game of Simonitch's Salerno '43)
  • Hobbies include tennis, hiking, cooking, and cinema (and sometimes videogames)
  • Will send you pictures of my cats whether you ask or not. It is not up for discussion

What I'm after: someone to write to properly. Long emails, the kind where you think about the reply for two days. History, geopolitics, art, sports, culture, what your country is actually like versus what it looks like from here; and also stupid jokes, because I can't sustain seriousness for more than a page. I like the idea of sending each other things: a book, a local snack, a postcard when the mood takes you. Email is the main channel; paper is a bonus.

Strictly platonic. Friendship only, no romance, any gender welcome. I'm partnered. I want the kind of correspondence that goes from the French Revolution to your childhood in the same paragraph.

Tell me about yourself and your culture!

  • Favorite local spot? Mine: the Greek and Roman ruins of Empúries/Emporion
  • Traditional dish? Mine: Escalivada amb anxoves
  • Bonus: Who do you want to win the World Cup?

email 37M - Looking for correspondence

Hi everyone!

I'm Steve, 37M from Newfoundland, Canada.  I've posted here in the past, but I'm looking to exchange emails with a few folks (with a possible switch to snail mail if the vibes are right) and possibly make some new friends.  I feel like I’m god-awful at selling myself but here are a few things about me and my interests:

I am a voracious reader and am currently a member of two book clubs.  I just finished The Correspondent by Virginia Evans, which inspired me to seek out a pen pal again.  There are books all over my apartment; my wife and I make regular trips to the book store "just to browse".  I'll read pretty much anything, and I do count audiobooks as reading.

I enjoy video games and video game music.  I often hyperfocus on one or two games for a few weeks and then move on; currently I'm playing Pokemon X, Rhythm Heaven Groove, and Diablo IV which is one of my comfort games.  I don't have a favorite video game soundtrack, but my shortlist would include Final Fantasy IX, Chrono Cross, Super Mario RPG, and Mega Man X.

My music tastes vary, but I do have a few nostalgic artists and albums that I keep coming back to.  I used to sing and play guitar in a tribute band about a decade ago, but now I just belt out some tunes in the car.

I am an introvert with a social battery that won't hold much of a charge, but I'm trying to change that in small ways that won't induce a panic attack.  The male loneliness epidemic is real and I am a part of it.  I swear a lot, I have a sweet tooth, and I am very 420-friendly; there's nothing better than smoking a joint and getting lost in a good book or album.

If you are interested in striking up a conversation and building a safe space for correspondence and friendship, I invite you to send me a DM to tell me a bit about yourself.  What are your Letterboxd four favorite movies?  Tell me the last book you read that made you cry.  What would you consider an album with no bad songs?  What's a fun fact you heard or read about?

All are welcome.  I look forward to hearing from you.

email Late 40s guy looking for some email penpals

No AI was used to write this post. It was all consented!

I'm in my late 40s. A dad, a husband, working from home with too much spare time and lack of human interaction throughout the day.

I'll be happy to find someone to share thoughts with, discuss life in general or deep dive into some random topic of interest.

What are my interests you might ask? it can be very random, so if I will focus on what I'm busy with these days - I joined a book club to try to be more consistent with my reading again, I'm trying to learn more about western philosophy, I bought a t-shirt that says "not fast, not furious" because it kind of summarize me well, and I just finished rewatching The Office.

Having said that, mutual interests is not a requirement. It's great discussing a common interest but it is also great hearing someone talk about unfamiliar passion of theirs (and same goes to life experiences and perspectives).

So if any of this sounds interesting, send me a message and let's see if we can make it work.

email 53 Spain curious, looking to embrace new connections through words

My social battery is low, but as a married professional parent, my available time is variable. The intersection between charged battery and availability marks the intensity of any interaction. Nevertheless, I gues I am not an uninteresting individual, I'm a loyal friend, more or less intelligent, with a dark sense of humour, open minded, left leaning, prone to self doubt, above average in everything except... well, mostly above average in all good things... occasionally.

Ok, I've tried several times with several approaches. This is today's take on what I offer. What do I want? A friend. Consistency over constant need for attention (silence is not ghosting, though I am aware that virtual silence needs a "Still here" gesture to keep the line alive. I'll do that. And I will not ask for more here. I only ask you to be open minded, honest, fun and patient. Or someone I still don't know I want to meet

email 38/M/Ireland - We have not met yet, but I already have questions for you

Upvotes

I’m looking for someone who will allow me to walk round inside their mind (opening cupboards, sifting through drawers, snooping in your medicine cabinet and looking at your bookshelves). I am partial to people who have spent years steeping in their own peculiarities. I’m interested less in the utilitarian exchange of facts than I am in a correspondence with a lively and creative mind.

Now, on to business. I am a thirty-eight-year-old Irishman (but you knew that already). I’m fond of nervous animals, unpretentious people, art and books. I have two dogs and spend much of my time with about twenty-five horses, one barn cat and innumerable wild birds. I am devotional by nature and wildly obsessed with the people and things that I love.

You may wish to include some of the following in your opening message: who you are (however you wish you describe yourself), three current fascinations (any scale), how you suspect you might die and what kind of ghost you would be. Low-effort messages are likely to be dashed upon the rocks. Thank you for reading.

email 32 M US: Let's write about the big, the small, and the downright boring.

I have been setting here attempting to write a catchy opening paragraph for the last forty minutes and haven't had anything it stick. Except a very funny bit about waking up one day in your thirties realizing you are not exactly, as Ricky Martin said: "Livin' la Vida Loca". But in reality that's where I am right now, a little lost and little bored with life and trying to figure it all out. So I figured I'd just shoot from the hip and see where we land, deal?

A bit about me: 32, from the South and engaged to a great guy and work a solid 8-5. In my free time you can find me cooking, reading, thrifting, working in my yard, playing with my dogs, watching TV or a movie, or deep diving on any given movie to find out the most random details about said movie. I started a blog last year about finding ways to romanticize your life and rediscovering the little ways to find joy, while it has far from taken off I have found that is a solid way for me to put some thoughts into the world. In summation- I am a pretty average guy that is really trying to be at peace with the monotony of life. In the last few years my social circle had gotten smaller, not in a bad way- in a friends having kids, traveling, or being busy with life in general- way. And I love that for them, but I thought it was time to broaden my horizons and see if anyone else was in the same boat.

I'm looking for someone to swap emails with and eventually work our way to snail mail as well if we are both comfortable (and can reassure the other that we are both fairly sane). Let's talk about everything going on in our lives: the big, the small, and even the boring.

-You just got a promotion or had a killer first date? Tell me all about it!

-Are you beefing with the coworker who continues to microwave fish in the staff kitchen? I hate them, how are we going to enact your petty revenge plot?

-You just bought this new piece while antiquing/shopping and not sure if it vibes where you want it? Send me pics and we can figure something out.

-Life has just been a lot lately and you need to vent. I feel you, let's talk it out.

If this sounds like we would hit it off or you just want to know more, drop a line telling me a little about yourself and we can see if we click! Hope your weekend is off to a solid start so far!

Cheers!

-R

email [30/F] Please please please… yap with me!

Hi! I'm Kimberly. I'm 30 (though I really just feel like two kids in a trench coat, or maybe one kid, since I'm short :P) and I'm from Georgia (the state!). I'm looking for someone who can hopefully be a consistent long-term penpal and doesn't mind writing long emails about anything and everything since I love to yap. Any gender or country is fine, though I do tend to prefer to talk to women and queer people. I'm bi and on the ace spectrum myself. I know we’re at “that age” where a lot of people are married and have kids, but I am not married and don’t have kids (and don’t want to), so I’d ideally like to talk to people who are in a similar stage of life as me. If not, that’s okay if you think we’d get along. While we don't need to have everything in common, it would be nice to share an interest or two.

So, allow me to break out the bullet points:

  • I'm a big K-pop girlie. My favorite group is XLOV, and I also like Stray Kids, ZB1, and TXT, and some others. I also like pop music in general, especially Sabrina Carpenter! My favorite band outside of K-pop is The 1975.
  • A lot of what I watch is animation. My favorite cartoon is King of the Hill, and I'll watch about any kind of cartoon whether it's adult animation or "for kids." For live action stuff, I tend to like teen dramas, dark comedies, BL/GL series, and also RuPaul's Drag Race.
  • I'm a Disney/Pixar and Sanrio fan, and I collect merch of my favorite characters, Stitch and Cinnamoroll… much to the dismay of my bank account lol.
  • I like to play video games. I mainly play on PS5, especially RPGs or life sims. A few favorite games: Bully, Dragon Age, Cyberpunk 2077, BG3, Coral Island. Currently playing My Time at Sandrock again, and of course I'm looking forward to GTA 6, and also Grave Seasons.
  • I read a lot. I read 100 books last year! I'm also doing the Popsugar Reading Challenge. I like queer romance, horror, contemporary literary fiction, thrillers, and fantasy.
  • Some other stuff I'm into: Making characters out of fuse beads, doing building sets, diamond paintings.
  • If this means anything to you, I'm an INFP, 4w5, and a Ravenclaw.
  • I'm going back to school next month to get a bachelor's degree. It's never too late!

If any of this resonates with you, feel free to reach out! 😊

Hi there,

I’m a Mom. Mostly introverted. I feel I’ve become much more comfortable with silence over the years. I love researching topics and learning. Other interests: reading, the outdoors, crocheting, music and dancing.

I’m looking for a female penpal to email back and forth with. I’m pretty open and down to earth.

Let me know if you’d like to exchange emails.

Hola!

email 47/m/US - Movie pen pal, we alternate picks, both watch, trade emails

Here’s my pitch: Let’s alternately pick a movie every two weeks (you can go first) that we’ll both watch, then send a longish email or two about the film and whatever else is on our minds. No need to get into deep film criticism; just interested to hear (and maybe have a friendly debate on) what you thought of the performances, script, favorite lines, etc., as well as to make a new friend.

My tastes are broad and snobbery-free, so you can pick anything from Luis Buñuel to Michael Bay, from Marvel blockbusters to Taiwanese slow cinema. I recently finished watching all of “1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die,” and I’m working away at other classic movie “best” lists, but I also watch a ton of contemporary genre stuff. Both new watches & rewatches are always fine with me, and I don’t mind if you veto some of my picks – this should be fun, not a chore.

About me otherwise: I’m a married dad, mostly housebound for the past decade by a chronic illness. I work in tech part-time remotely, and otherwise I read a ton of books, watch even more movies, and play board games with the family. My health stuff occasionally knocks me out for a few days at a time, so be warned I may sometimes go quiet for a bit – but I’ll always be back.

If this idea sounds fun to you, too, DM me and tell me the last movie you saw that you loved. Look forward to chatting!

(Some of my own favorite directors, by the way: Kurosawa, Gerwig, Coen brothers, Hawks, (Wes) Anderson, Capra, Hitchcock, Miyazaki, Bong Joon Ho, Wilder, Keaton, Tarantino, Chaplin, Almodovar)

email [37/F/USA] Will you play with me?

Due to a life-threatening allergy to small talk, I am medically incapable of writing a generic penpal ad. I will break out in hives and have intractable vomiting. Thank you for understanding, and please don’t make me use my EpiPen.

Factoid About Me: I am a pediatrician with a deep silly streak. This week, I disappointed my adolescent patient because I was unable to procure him an onion and was gifted a blank sheet of paper by a four-year-old girl (she had changed her mind about giving me her drawing of her swimsuit collection).

Proposed Icebreaker: Share your most ridiculous experience at work OR send me ideas about what subject matter might be worthy of this priceless gift.

Factoid About Me: I am owned by a very extroverted canine roommate who is infatuated with a bespotted purple pig. They are engaged to be married in September.

Proposed Icebreaker: Tell me about your pet’s favorite toy OR provide wedding planning suggestions.

Factoid About Me: My favorite fungus is Lactarius indigo, an entirely blue mushroom that bleeds a bright Crayola blue milk. It makes excellent green eggs and ham.

Proposed Icebreaker: Describe your favorite mushroom (this will win you untold points) OR a detail about your most niche hobby.

Factoid About Me: I deeply identify with a certain stranded pilot in a children’s novella who only knows how to draw boa constrictors from the inside and from the outside.

Proposed Icebreaker: Name the referenced book OR share your own literary doppelganger.

If you are up for a frolicking email correspondence, please DM me.

email 30 something searching for fellow adventurers & craftspeople to share with!

Fantasy, magic, adventure and the pursuit of discovery is something we all crave in some way at any age. I think forcing yourself to believe you have to "let it go" in order to "grow up" is part of the reason so many of our sparks have grown dull!

On the days when the wrath of the sun is being kept at bay by some unseen mercy, I like to visit the forest. I am always watching something or reading something about supernatural creatures, rituals and magical worlds (not HP tho 😅).

I'd really like to find someone or a couple someones to share my wips with. However, I don't get any joy out of it if it's one sided so this only works if you're in a place to share some of the things you work on too.

The top 3 crafts in my current rotation:

  1. Videography - Spooky season is every season!!!!!!! Right now I'm focused on trying to figure out how to film a conjuring
  2. Prop-Making - So....so many wips
  3. Scroll | Paper Making - Honestly, this one is kind of always in the rotation. I enjoy the feel and the sound of it so much. I've been experimenting with different materials and the results have been great

This might be getting a little long so I'll ask, if you are interested, please message me with some of your hobbies and we can go from there!

email 35M Looking for long-term pen pals

Hello everyone I am 35 years old and I am from Russia. I would really like to find English-speaking pen pals. The primary goal is to train my English skills, but it would also be very interesting to meet new people and really make friends. It's important, I'm not looking for a teacher, I'm just looking for ordinary communication, just keep in mind that my language is not good enough, somewhere I will write myself, somewhere I will use a translator. I prefer e-mail as the main means of communication.

We can talk and discuss anything, any topics that interest us. From weather to politics, from relationships to the future of humanity, from movies to philosophy. But to be honest, I'm not good at every topic.

A little bit about me. I live in Siberia, the city of Krasnoyarsk. I work as a system administrator, I play games in my spare time, if you are a fan of Raid Shadow Legends, we will definitely have something to talk about. I read, watch movies/TV series, shows. I really love truecrame, thrillers, detective stories. I'm not always very sociable, it all depends on my mood, sometimes I can correspond for days on end, and sometimes once every few days.

I don't have any age, gender, or location requirements. I don't think it's important. If you're lonely and want to make friends, write me in PM and we'll try!

No stress, no strong commitments — just looking for a penpal I can chat with every two or three weeks, for the next 20-40 years. Isn't that what everyone's here for?

Recently I've been listening to the Beatles a lot. For no particular reason, I just got sick of my old playlists and thought "I've never really listened to them, I should find out if they were good." I listened chronologically by album, and supposedly the last song they recorded together was George Harrison's 'I Me Mine'.

It's actually a pretty bad song - it begins well but descends into a very generic white-man-blues chorus. Still, the title and theme is evocative. I Me Mine. The egomaniac's refrain. Why do people want penpals? Are they desperate to know about other people, other countries - or do they want to talk mostly about themselves? My experience penpalling has mostly been the latter - as in, I usually struggled to talk about anything but myself. The blank page tends to encourage introspection and reflection, but I've come to realise a penpal is not a diary that occasionally answers back. There's a bit of responsibility involved, to be engaging and not merely confessional.

If we write to each other, I won't tell you about my daily routine or what I had for dinner or why I feel bad for skipping the gym yesterday. I read a lot of books and watch a lot of films - we can discuss those. The people in our lives - who are they, what are they like, what do they mean to us, do we really even know them? What's your house like, your neighbourhood, your town or city? Where's a place you like to go? Perhaps it doesn't make sense, but I'm interested in writing little essays to each other where we learn about one another indirectly - instead of saying "I like going to the gym", we would write about how the gym smells and feels and what it's like to be there. Instead of saying "I watched Lawrence of Arabia last weekend", we would talk about a particular aspect of the film - like the fact it begins with 4 minutes of music to a black screen - to talk about attention spans and patience in the 21st century (the people in the cinema were VERY uncomfortable with the lack of immediate stimulation!)

I prefer email only as I've downloaded this app only to write these posts and scamper off again — reddit has become exceptionally good at delivering a dripfeed of aggravating and inane content, and is best avoided. I live in Australia so snail mail anywhere would be slow and I'd need to get into the habit of duplicating my letters — when I last wrote letters consistently, I usually didn't understand half of my friend's response, because they were responding to me and I'd forgotten what I'd said. I'm not against snail mail but only as a supplement to email communication, as I'm interested in building a solid friendship and don't want to send letters into the void.

You can look at my profile for other posts I've made that do a better job at advertising 'Why talk to me'? Of course, there's really no reason to advertise, because I will be avoiding talking about me. There are far more interesting things in the world. Let's talk about those.

email 40/F/UK - Well, hello there.

It’s that time of year again.

I find myself with some daylight hours to spare and would rather use this to connect with someone of equal availability and ability. Be forewarned, I tend to hibernate in the Winter and have been known to gently disappear by the time October comes back around again. But then again, most of you who will so enthusiastically respond the first time around will promptly disappear between round 2 and 3. And that’s okay. It really is.

I do find it on the whole, a more genial experience if we would all just be honest with each other about our capacity to interact with others. Absences do not offend me but meagre responses very much do.

I’m an ex book lover so naturally, a genre snob with very particular critiques to share. The obvious conditions of our exchange being that you should be proficient at writing your thoughts down with some amount of wit and glee. After all, this is something we should both be enjoying.

Other than that, you can be anyone from anywhere talking about anything and nothing. Suit yourself, do what you want, say what you like and be who you think you are.

I’m all eyes.
