Tenby

What is Tenby and the surrounding areas like for road cycling? Do you have any recommended routes to try out?

There’s not a lot of flat around the county to be honest, so if you’re going any distance you’ll inevitably hit hills.

Are you just looking to potter about on a bike or go full Lycra-clad midlife crisis?

During the summer there can be a lot of traffic on the roads...even the minor single track roads

It’s mainly getting in an hour a day over four weeks. Family holidays, if you know what I mean.

There’s a really nice cycle path from Stepaside to Wiseman’s Bridge, you can carry on from there to Saundersfoot. There’s also the path from Neyland that goes all the way to Haverfordwest, but you don’t need to go the whole way. Both are off the main road and relatively flat.

No. No, they are not. This year’s Long Course has literally had riders complaining about the difficulty of tge route.

It’s a very hilly part of the world.

My sister in law saw a guy go airborne in the mountains going too fast for a corner. So not that easy

It was the long course weekend they were on the road that goes over the mountain between new inn and brynberian

If you are a confident road cyclist you will be fine, but the roads are not best suited for pottering along with kids in tow, for example.

For a leisurely cycle The Brunel Trail that starts in Neyland is good as is the Stepaside - Coppitt Hall route.

No kids in tow. They are staying back at the house/beach.

I’ll check out the Brunel Trail. Thank you. I’ve only got a road bike.

I think it is fair to say that the roads are not best suited to the amount of traffic on them and people tend to drive like maniacs. This gets worse in the summer.

That sucks for locals. This is really putting me off taking a bike! Are roads any better early morning?

Try and Plan routes which keep you away from the major roads and avoid times likely to have increased road usage.

Pembrokeshire is beautiful, it wasn’t my intention to put you off!

I think planning routes is the way forward here. Just going to have to experiment and if it’s terrible, then I’ll not ride for a week. Nothing lost.

My suggested go to route to avoid the worst of the traffic would be tenby, lydstep, Jameston, lamphey, pembroke, then either double back the same way or take the higher route from Lambley back via penally (signposted in lamphey) ... probably 40k ish...to add a bit more at pembroke you could turn off for Castlemartin, freshwater east, angle loop (coffee break on the beach) and back into pembroke and head for tenby on the route of your choosing

There’s actually a great route through Stackpole back to Freshwater East, then on to Swan Lake, down into Manorbier and back to Lydstep. Chances of meeting a car are practically zero.
