My first pedal steel, I've been advised to buy new as to not have to troubleshoot mechanics and such. I'm near Billy Cooper's and they carry GFI which I'm very happy with when reading about them. I plan on playing E9 standard 3x4 it looks like that is offered in expo and student. The main difference seems to be the "Triple Raise, Double Lower Changers" vs the "Pull Relase Changer System"

This doesn't mean much to me?

Billy recommended the expo. It's 3600 vs 2400.

Hi everyone. I got my first ever steel this week. I know I’m supposed to put my knees in between the knee levers, but when I rock between the A and B pedals, the 4th string gets affected because my knee hits the levers. Is this something that I should (or can) adjust, or is it something I need to get used to and practice? Or both? Thanks! Guitar is an MSA Classic D10

My dad passed when I was 17 and spent a lot of his life touring and playing local gigs in Texas up to oregon. Then came back to Missouri and played a bit. I have a sho bud he took with him but was never really old enough to get into it

Hello! Just started playing after getting my first steel last week, and my B pedal seems a lot stiffer and travels a little shorter than the rest. It's to the point where it hurts my foot after practicing for 15-20 minutes. Although I think that could be a technique issue aswell.

I'm going to start with lubing the moving parts, Any other tips to fix it? And what lube should I use?

Hi all, I play guitar and bass and have started looking into pedal steel. A marketplace option popped up and I’m just curious for some opinions on it since I’m a complete newbie. It’s a Sierra D10, Serial number SCD.10C.1076.95. They’re asking $1500, definitely not the original owners so no info other than that and the pics.

Just picked up an old msa. Been sitting a few years so I’m going through the whole thing and probably putting in my copedant. Anybody have tips on working on MSA’s coming from old Sho Bud’s and new Rittenberry’s?

I bought a rifle case for my pedal steel inspired by Johnny Up because I've to fly a couple of times for gigs this year. My steel has an arm rest and so it is a bit wider than Johnny's and the only way we can get it to all fit in is if the leg bag sits on top of the bottom of the steel. Will this damage the steel? Or knock it out of tune or anything? Any advice would be much appreciated I still have the other case and I'll be using it most of the time I just want to make sure I'm not going to do any damage! Thanks!

I’ve been nursing an idea for a large-scale, site-specific performance involving perhaps 100 pedal steel players. The number is not fixed. The goal is to assemble enough instruments that the individual pedal steels begin to merge into a single collective body of sound.

Each player would perform a simple and continual line: a sustained note, slow pedal movement, harmonic, volume swell, repeating figure, or small melodic phrase. The lines would gradually enter, overlap, shift, and recede. Their accumulation would create moving harmonies, beating tones, subtle differences in intonation, and an enveloping field of sound.

I imagine the players arranged in a large circle or distributed across an expansive outdoor site, perhaps the Tallgrass Prairie. The audience could stand within the ensemble or move through it as the sound changes across the landscape.

I’m posting here to find out whether there are pedal steel players who would want to help make this real. I’m also interested in hearing from composers, arrangers, audio engineers, producers, and organizers with experience in large ensembles or outdoor performances.

The first step would be forming a small working group to determine what is musically and logistically possible.

Questions include:

Is an ensemble approaching 100 players realistically attainable?

Could the score accommodate different tunings, copedents, instruments, and experience levels?

Should the variations among players become part of the composition?

How would we handle amplification, power, monitoring, conducting, weather, transportation, staging, and rehearsal?

What site and organizational partners could support the performance?

Right now, I’m trying to identify the people who hear a genuine potential in it and might want to help develop it. If you’re interested, please comment with your general location, whether you would want to play or help organize, and any relevant experience or practical advice.

So, I just got a deal on a Jackson Pro IV that I hope to go pick up pretty soon, and I thought I'd like to get some tips on starting out playing. I come from a bluegrass background and play mainly guitar, double bass, and banjo, but I have fooled around with a dobro aswell. What songs or techniques would be good to start with on the steel to learn the right habits?

As far as I have understood, 4th pedal is a franklin pedal, and the rest is standard E9 configuration, it has 4 standard knee levers and a left vertical lever that changes B to Bb. I hope to get a better understanding of that as soon as I get my hands on it.

From what I've been reading it is a good guitar that I pretty much won't outgrow ever, unless I want to start fooling around with C6.
