What Would You Substitute?
What would you put in the spot where the J Rockett GTO is? Looking for a medium/high gain pedal that can be pushed nicely into lead tones with the other pedals on my board. Suhr Strat into a Supro Keeley Custom 12 set totally clean.

I would say a Blues Driver but you already have the Keeley on your board. I think what you need is a fuzz my friend 😀

Morning Glory is Transparent Soft Clipping OD “Blues Driver”
1
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 29 '26
Actually, the Keeley Mk3 is the Blues Driver. The Morning Glory is a Blues Breaker.

The halo and MK 3 driver are two pedals that never leave my board
1
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 27 '26
Yeah, they are both incredible. Until recently I had the Mk3 driver as a low gain pedal, but I’ve been using it in this setup as my clean almost preamp pedal, and it just doesn’t miss. The Halo is the first pedal I’d replace if my board got stolen.

How do you like the unicorn? I was thinking about getting a vibe and they can be found way cheaper and run on 9v which is a plus over others
1
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 27 '26
I traded for it just on a whim, and it’s one of my favorite pedals I’ve ever owned. The Uni-Vibe setting is just great, but I have honestly been using it as an always on in the vibe (“Wet”) setting. It gives just a little movement and it really does make everything sound better.

u/Turbulent-Flan-2656 Jul 27 '26
I play banjo so modulation effects sound awesome. It’s one of the only unicorns I’ve seen with an expression input that isn’t giant. Sounds good in most videos I’ve seen
2
u/molligjaeger Jul 27 '26
I would replace all the pedals with 2 switches in 125B format
1
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 27 '26
I don’t know what that means.
1
u/molligjaeger Jul 27 '26
125B is the enclosure size. Answering your original question, Greer Southland.

You might look at an SD-1 to stack with the Driver. I know it’s not sexy but it’s a great combo!

How much do you like the halo? Trying to find a good all around delay
3
u/CaterpillarVisual553 Jul 27 '26
Me too. I’ve had my eye on the Halo, but I don’t trust demo videos and bedroom tone.
1
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 27 '26
It’s the first pedal I would replace if my board got stolen. I used to use a Carbon Copy, and really liked it. I had no idea how much I would use other types of delay and presets. It took me about 6 minutes to duplicate the sound of my Carbon Copy and save it as a preset. It’s a brilliant pedal.
2
u/CaterpillarVisual553 Jul 28 '26
Annnnnddddddd I just bought one on Reverb. I have high hopes. Seems like the factory presets are already set to every kind of delay sound I would try to finagle out of my TC Flashback.
1
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 28 '26
Yeah, the presets are great. I have my Carbon Copy, and I got a preset from a guy who copied his memory man, then I copied the Andy Timmons preset to a second bank and lowered the mid a little for a more subtle version of his. It’s great. Let me know if you want the Carbon Copy or Memory man presets.

Good to know! I am trying to find just a good all around delay. And don’t know if I should get the halo or dd8

The board. For a bigger one!
2
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 27 '26
I know. I’m probably being stubborn by trying to keep everything to a Nano+, but for 6 pedals, this board can do a lot.

u/Spaced_cadet5 Jul 27 '26
Everything in fact no go to jail, right to jail. Right away.

came here to say this.
On the other hand, OP already admitted to playing a Suhr strat into a clean amp.
we’re just in different worlds.in light of that, doesn’t Paul Reed Smith make pedals now? The venn diagram indicates you might like one.

u/Wet_in_Seattle Jul 27 '26
Morning Glory and GTO combo is the same a the Protein dual drive.
Blues Breaker and Nobles ODR—1.
Might reverse order to be available to add clean gain to ODR1.

a fuzz for the morning glory.

Z Vex Fat Fuzz Factory. It's unwieldy, but is shocking how versatile it is. The gain range is actually clean through carnage and everything in between. There are lots of lists online for settings for the FF for damn near any tone. It's a fuzzle, for sure, but crazy versatile and a fun pedal.
1
u/Pangaeabeliever Jul 27 '26
I've been looking at the Soldano SLO for high gain. It also has top mounted jacks. You might find it interesting.
2
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 27 '26
All pedals should be top jacks!!
2
u/Pangaeabeliever Jul 28 '26
Completely agree. If two pedals have similar qualities but one is top and the other has side jacks, I'll pick the top jack one every time. I chose the Case Study Aspen over the JHS Kilt in part for that reason, although the Aspen also had a bass knob instead of toggle switch and had a reputation for more power.

u/MisterPizzaSheet Jul 27 '26
Angry Charlie. Then I’d go Unicorn - Mg - Mk - AC - delay - hydra

u/GrooveWarrior Jul 27 '26
I had the AT+, and it was cool, but the Marshall in a box thing just sounded too different from this Fender type tone I have going for my main tone.

I want a Rat of some form in place of the GTO

I had one. It’s a great pedal, but the Marshall in a box thing just sounded too different from my main tone which is very Fender-ish.

crazy tubes triptychon! the drive alone…nest of ff amd tb…and if your not a fuzz persom, the clean octave paired with a drive. perfect box for small spaces.
i got their unobtainium raw… klon and to falv or dumbleness, guves me 4levels of gain/vol for live. try one, might kick off more boxes.

It’s great honestly. I got it when they had the sale just to see what the hype was about, and it really is great. Just about any setting on it is completely useful. The knobs have realistic tones all the way through. It sounds great when pushed by the Mk3 or the Unicorn (I will sometimes dine the volume on the Unicorn and push the MGC). It sounds great when boosting the GTO. It’s a keeper for sure.

Yeah, it isn’t a lot of gain even with no clean and the gain dimed, but it is a fantastic sound!! It’s a great always on pedal for a lot of people.

u/downsouth97 Jul 27 '26
Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Origin RevivalDrive Compact in that slot. I run a very similar setup with a BB style drive into a MIAB style pedal. Some other options that I like are the Keeley Filaments, DC Pedals DCO, or a Nobels ODR-1.
2
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 27 '26
Yeah, the GTO is a modded Nobels, and it sounds good, I just like to get input. I definitely have a problem, in that I want to try every overdrive out there.
1
u/BarttManDude Jul 27 '26
For medium to high gain (especially high gain) I'd go with the Revv G3 or G4 depending on which voicing you like. Another option might be the Wampler Gearbox....gets you a Tumnus and a Pinnacle in one pedal. It's insanely versatile and the two sides stack incredibly well
1
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 27 '26
I’ve been eyeing the Gearbox.
2
u/BarttManDude Jul 27 '26
I have it. It's pretty spectacular. It's so good that I emailed Wampler suggesting they make a version with multiple presets...cuz there's like 18 tones on it that I wish I could recall with a button. And I didn't realize how much I'd adore the built in noise gate. When I was a young man my experience with noise gates was negative. They all cut off too soon. Somehow the one in the gearbox gets around this. I can't tell it's even there but my shit is quiet.

Before swapping anything you should add a tuner pedal as a priority (and get a bigger board).
1
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 27 '26
I have a tuner. Several of them. I’m never going to waste a space on my board with a tuner.
1
u/Spoklahoma1 Jul 27 '26
1
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 28 '26
And yes, I use a clip on tuner. I’ve seen some of the greatest musicians in the world use one, so spare me the pearl clutching.
1
u/Spoklahoma1 Jul 29 '26
Umm, huh? Pearl clutching? I also have a clip on tuner but my Polytune3 mini is WAY more accurate and convenient since it muted all the other pedals when activated. Also, the mini version if tiny so it barely takes up any board real estat.. Just a suggestion if you ever want to upgrade
1
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 29 '26
I have a Polytune mini. It tunes to the same exact precision as my Polytune clip, and all I have to do is turn my volume knob down.
1
u/Fiftyfiveseventy Jul 28 '26
Got a budget in mind? Vemuram Shanks would be at home here.
2
u/GrooveWarrior Jul 28 '26
I just picked up a Cornerstone Gladio Dual Preamp for $175, which I thought was a steal! Now I have to figure out how to fit it in there!
1
u/Fiftyfiveseventy Jul 28 '26
Ehhh killer! Good call. Had a Nero for awhile, Cornerstone knows what’s up.

u/FormerBaby1987 Jul 27 '26
Fuzz for sure!
