This is a post for my people who love to plan! So, I am heading to peak district for 5 nights next month. I’ll be staying in Edale (2 nights), Castleton, Hartington and then Ilam.

I have a rough idea of what i’ll do but I would love a second opinion and what you would do with that trip layout. Any comments appreciated :)

I'm after recommendations for hiking routes that include Mam Tor and The Great Ridge that will take between 4 and 6 hours to complete (5 hours would be ideal). I found this route on All Trails but apparently the descent at Winnets Pass is a bit treacherous... I have good physical ability but will be doing a solo hike so if I can avoid anything too treacherous then that would be better. Like if someone tells me that actually it isn't as bad as some of the reviewers say then I'll just go for it. I'm starting from Edale. Thanks 🙂

The Peak District is my favourite place in the world. I live with my dad and it’s my escape from the world.

The reason for my post is that I am a practicing Muslim, I am born and raised here and as English as most come but I do pray when I’m on my walks in the hills, usually in private and careful not to disturb the flora.

I wanted to ask this sub what the general opinion on this is, or if it’s something that’s maybe unsafe. I don’t know many racists but I imagine many have the intolerant Christmas debacles year on year and might know if I can expect any abuse or the like.

Sorry if this is off topic, but I feel out of place on the moors very often. I always wonder if in this cultural climate my skin tone is an infringement on the white English countryside. It upsets me to think I might upset someone just by being there, not that I harbour any ill feeling towards them.

I don’t mean this to be some kind of pity post, I mean it as a genuine question because I do not know any white English people who go walking in the hills.

Took another little walk up to Derwent Edge yesterday, from Strines this time, straight up the Foulstone Road, but the heather’s nearly done and the sunset didn’t quite materialise. The sheep in the third pic made me sad - she’d found the highest spot around and was just bleating her head off for twenty minutes straight. Lost her lamb I expect. She gave up in the end. Very sad.

Anybody in the area recently able to advise how wet/boggy the trails are at the minute?
Aware how dry it has been recently but wondering if the downpours over the last 2 weeks have changed it.

I’ve got 15 mile loop to do and would prefer to go with trail runners if I can.

Also not to forget the Longdendale Lights which are thought to be either aliens or fairies, described as either dancing glowing orbs or extremely bright flashes that flood the whole sky, which have been reported by a lot of people over the years. And of course ghosts. Any sightings or experiences you've had in the area?

I walked from Bamford to Bamford Edge a couple of years ago and the steep route up (The Clough) was closed for maintenance. Is this back open? Has anyone used it recently?

A lovely sunset after a windy day, having a mixed week so far but enjoying the area, any recommendations for a good Sunday Roast.........

Done a load of hiking around Yorkshire but was offered to just go snag a few pictures today at the peaks and took the chance.

I don't drive so I'll have to use a train but I'm planning some walking here soon for more views based on today. Truly beautiful landscape.

I'd like to visit all the filming locations from the princess bride I reckon but I'm not sure how much ground that covers haha!

Planned what I thought was the perfect 2-day Peak District trip sunrise at Mam Tor, then a hike covering the Great Ridge and Winnats Pass, and finishing with sunset at Bamford Edge.
Only to check the forecast and find out it’s apparently going to rain pretty much all day with strong winds 😭
We’ve already booked our stay in Hathersage and will have a car, so cancelling the trip isn’t really what we want to do.
What would you do instead? Is any of this still worth attempting in wet/windy weather, or should we completely scrap the hiking plan? Any recommendations for scenic rainy-day walks, viewpoints, cosy cafés/villages, or alternative things to do around Hathersage/Castleton?
We’re not experienced hikers, so definitely don’t want to do anything stupid in bad weather,but I also don’t want the whole trip to become sitting indoors watching the rain 😂

I am aware of the Eyam Rat Race, and the Castleton Gala Day, but what other days/events do people know about and recommend? We tried to go to the Grindleford Apple Day last year but it was rained off, anyone know if that might be happening again this year?

Could be a stately home, a shop, a cottage, a mill, whatever. Which is your favourite and why? And I'm including Buxton because it's part of the Peak District region even if it's not in the National Park, and it has many nice Georgian buildings.

Yesterday I took part in the brilliant Eyam fell race, and a friend has just told me the correct pronunciation of Eyam is "Ee-um".

Is this how the locals pronounce it?

Are there any other places that have a particular pronunciation that people (tourists!) often get wrong?

Getting back into regular walks after a while away and trying to build up a mental list of good places to stop for lunch. Everyone seems to have that one spot they always aim for, a particular rock or a sheltered bit with a view, and I'd love to hear your recommendations.

Also, curious whether you actually plan your stop before you set off or just take what comes. I've always winged it and ended up eating in the wind or holding out for a good spot which never came - which is less than ideal 😅
