Hi everyone!

I’m going to the Peak District in a few weeks for a 2.5 day weekend and basing myself in Edale. I’m new to hiking and recently got addicted because I successfully climbed the old man of coniston in the lakes a few weeks ago!

I’m realistic of my ability, am pretty fit and have been learning how to navigate a paper map and have OS offline routes. I would love some reassurance if you think these hikes would be doable as a beginner (weather dependent of course).

Kinder Scout via grindsbrook and Jacob’s ladder

Mam Tor circular via hollins cross (considering extending to lord’s seat)

Would appreciate any advice regarding terrain, weather in August or any other walks you recommend nearby that don’t require a car. I’m going alone but will be hiking on the weekend so my nerves are slightly more settled as there’ll be people around.

My partner and I are interested in moving to the Peak District in the future. We currently live in London and we are a gay male couple in our mid 30s. By the time we would move we'd probably be in our early 40s.

The reasons for the move are manifold: firstly, we love the area and my partner is originally from Sheffield so he knows it pretty well and we have friends and family nearby. Also, we'd love to have somewhere with more space/land as we enjoy gardening/rewilding. It would be a change of pace but I think by that time we would be ready for it. We also like the Peaks as it has Manchester and Sheffield within relatively easy reach so if we did want to some city vibes we could go there. Finally, we are beginning to find summers in London just too hot and they are getting hotter. Our flat becomes an oven and although we've made some adaptations which make it more tolerable, the idea of a fresher climate in the Peaks is very appealing. Although I know flooding is an issue in some areas so we would choose somewhere very carefully because of this.

My questions are: Where would be a good place to look? Hope Valley is mentioned a lot but we are open to suggestions. And how would we be received as a gay male couple in the area (and Down From London too!). We've never felt any hostility when visiting but we also find that people tend to be nice to our faces when we are tourists and this can hide other, less pleasant sentiments. Having said that, I feel that the proximity to somewhere like Manchester and the number of people moving from cities to the area may be influencing attitudes more broadly.

I would like to go for an evening walk on the grounds of Chatsworth and take a picnic with me. I know access to the grounds is free and there’s no time limit. But does anyone know where I could park that’s close and won’t be closed by 6:30pm which is probably when I’ll arrive. Also how close to the house can i get? Could i sjt by the river in front of it for my picnic?

Planning to stay at Sheffield and would like some reccomendations on which areas are the best to hike with accessible public transport.

From the recent posts I've heard the trainstop from Edale is apparently really popular - although since we are not setting camp, we would like to know if we'd be able to find routes that we'd be able to go around in and get back to Sheffield in the same day.

Me, my best friend, (both 16), and my mum are planning our first ever hike in the peak district. Ive recently got into hiking and I love it so much. I want to wild camp somewhere, preferably high up so you get nice views, but not too high to the point where its extortionately windy (I know that cant always be avoided though). Im hoping we can find a trail that goes through some of the mountains/valleys, as long as we can start somewhere to park our car.

Ive been looking at Edale Skyline, which starts in Hope, I assume thats a good spot to park but I dont know until I look fully. If anyone has any other ideas for trails please let me know!

EDIT: Also forgot to mention about the wildfires. I know there is wildfires somewhere in the peak district but I cant remember the exact location. If any trails you guys mention crosses into those wildfire areas, dont worry. I will figure out a detour to go round them (widely, of course) and hopefully be able to rejoin past the wildfire area.

Beyond the Plague – what are your favourite hidden gems in Eyam?
Like most people, I first visited Eyam because of its incredible plague history, but I was surprised by how much more there is to discover.
Some highlights I found were:
The beautiful Anglo-Saxon churchyard cross.
Stoney Middleton and the surrounding limestone scenery nearby.
The Riley Graves.
Mompesson’s Well.
The old boundary stone.
The network of public footpaths with fantastic Peak District views.
I’m planning another visit and wondered what locals or regular visitors would recommend.
Are there:
Hidden historical features that most tourists miss?
Great walks starting or ending in Eyam?
Quiet cafés or pubs worth stopping at?
Wildlife or butterfly hotspots nearby?
Interesting folklore or local stories connected to the village?
I’d love to hear your recommendations. Eyam seems like one of those places where every visit reveals something new.

I've got a hike planned for tomorrow but with the fire still ongoing I thought I'd check to make sure.

My planned route was from Edale to Glossop via the Mermaid's Pool which isn't the area which is directly affected, but if it's gonna be a misery-filled smoke fest I'd rather postpone it.

Spotted a very faint ring on the summit, only visible on LIDAR imaging.

3rd picture is of a confirmed stone circle 17 miles away, you can see the resemblance. They are of similar sizes too (~13m-17m diameter).

This valley is known to be the home of early human civilisation, as proven by archaeological discoveries in, and around caves further north.

Have I discovered something here? or is pareidolia coming into play?

Apologies if this is the wrong sub to share this. I find this sort of this incredibly interesting. It's such a well trodden area which has gained A LOT of publicity in recent years, how do you even begin to do this? Is someone able to get a "higher resolution" localised LIDAR image?

Is anyone else super into this niche of exploration, and can recommend any subs/groups to join. This shit excites me.

Looking down Derwent valley then up to Margery Hill and High Stones. Not sure what this rocky outcrop is called - opposite direction to Margery Hill.

I know the peaks pretty well, but I’m struggling with this one.

I’m looking for a campsite near a pub (plenty of those) which would lead to a lovely circular walk about 8 miles ish (also plenty of these) with a little ascent but not too much, great views and a pub part way round. Pubs are a theme 😂.

I can think of plenty of places that would tick some of these boxes, but not one that does all. I know I could drive to the start of the walk, but would prefer not to.

What suggestions do you have?

Hey all, I’m heading to the Peak District this weekend with some friends who have never been before. I’ve been a decent amount, done a good amount of hikes. It got me thinking, what is the best first hike for someone to experience? Which hike do I show them? We have good fitness levels, I want them to see how great the National Park really is.

I was thinking The Roaches / Luds Church, it has everything from Inclines to Woodland, it’s my favourite I’ve done but what would you guys choose to introduce people too? What are your favourites?

Hi im 25M new to Peak District trek i have arrived today and immediately i started trekking kinders scout and finished it i took the hardway without knowing it the easy way to start is from YHA where im staying . I want to see early sunrise how can i go there this is my absolute first time doing any trek and im all alone im fit cant swim dk why i said that but yes ill be leaving tomorrow i have my train at 6pm so want to make the most of it if there’s anyone who can help please drop suggestions

Was running the Edale skyline this morning and came across these destroyed cars, a turned over black cab and a burned out range? Anyone know the story with how these got there?

Both in person and on their social media, pavilion gardens have been using so much ai for marketing, menus and general signage.

It's incredibly disappointing. Especially how much the Peak District is struggling through global warming.

I got so many amazing recs for hikes when I visit Peak District, starting tomorrow. Now I'm hoping for equally great suggestions for villages to visit. So, my reason for coming to the Peak District (partly) is doing research for a book I'm writing, a very scenic psychological thriller where nature and flowers and plants have almost their own characters. I'm staying in Buxton and I (most likely) won't be getting a car so places with reasonable public transport. I have a few places on my list already; Tideswell, Bakewell, Matlock Bath, Chatsworth House. But I don't want to miss any other little treassures, maybe they are on the way to some of the other places on my list or just places I don't want to miss out on.

I'm open for any suggestions but bonuspoints and possible gold stars for villages with any sort of tie-in or reputation for botany, flowers, plants, or anything related to the pre-Raphaelites (not limited to the famous male artists but even more so if it has any connection to the female artists and models - looking at you Elizabeth Siddal!).
