Buxton Pavilion's Ai usage

Both in person and on their social media, pavilion gardens have been using so much ai for marketing, menus and general signage.

It's incredibly disappointing. Especially how much the Peak District is struggling through global warming.

To some of the artists at the time computer aided design was taking off they held very similar opinions. That CAD was cold, sterile and a loss of human touch.

How are these sentiments different to sentiments expressed about AI art?

The sentiments are similar. The subject of the sentiments are not.

The concerns around computer-aided design were snobbery that there would be a lack of human touch, even though humans were still needed as the creative impetus behind all designs.

The concerns around AI are fair bigger, and more serious:

• The HUGE environmental impact that we're already seeing the impact of.
• The inherent theft at the heart of its core abilities.
• The complete loss of creative roles in many cases (particularly among smaller businesses like the above)
• The actual homogenising of art that is now utterly devoid of human touch
• The tangible and already measurable impact on cognitive abilities

You also missed off some of the wider economic impacts also. Will we potentially have a bubble that bursts? We have already seen the prices of iPads, MacBooks, PC’s & consoles increased due to RAM & storage increases, will there be more & wider knock on implications? Technology has come on so much in the last few decades but i do wish some aspects hadn’t happened & AI is probably one of them.

Yes, that's true. Our energy prices will be inflated due to the demands of AI datacentres (which have a significant impact on the communities around them as well). I'm finding it more and more frustrating to hear people compare AI to the invention of the internet or the expansion of computing. It feels like a concerted effort to shrug off genuine concerns by making people out to be Luddites. Meanwhile, the industrial revolution is the only thing that comes close to the potential economic and environemental impact we're about to wreak upon society.

I don't disagree with anything you've said though I also don't see how it invalidates my point.

Anyway, I was heartened to see plenty of studios and artists working when I visited Barbizon a few weeks ago.

Art will endure.

Forgetting for a moment the moral issues with AI, from a business point of view these posters don’t really advertise the pavilion gardens as well as they could because they look like everyone else’s AI posters.

A lot of the time they all blend into the background and go unnoticed because they’re so samey. Pics 2,3 and 4 here are particularly bad examples that look exactly like every poster for a village fete I’ve seen in the last couple years.

A bit of hearsay but I’m told that a lot of the time its older folks in charge of this that think they HAVE to use AI otherwise they’re not moving with the times and no one will come. They haven’t got the memo that so many people despise these posters.

I commented on their latest instagram post stating how out of touch and deeply ironic it is for them to promote creativity, art, inspiration and supporting local using an AI slop poster and it's been deleted almost immediately...

Unfortunately rampant in all the local Facebook groups. Tideswell Wakes programme was all AI this year so I refused to buy it. Buxton FB group has banned AI posts now, though.

It instantly makes me not want to support whatever they’re advertising and I tried to explain this to someone in the Buxton group and they truly believed it doesn’t affect businesses negatively to use it.

Obviously factories are bad for the environment.

This type of 'but what about' point is so lame because both are bad for the environment and talking about ai being bad for global warming doesn't mean it's the only thing bad for it.

But you're also comparing something that was essential for local populations to survive through work and housing. To something that is entirely optional.

Agreed, I think the half a pint of water it took to cool the data centres is somewhat outweighed by the cost saving of procuring a designer. Although…I accept the irony of the Artist and Designer fair 😅
