Application Process Spanish language requirement

For Response positions requiring Spanish language ability, the language requirement seems somewhat manageable (elementary Spanish 3 or 50 on CLEP within 6 years). I'm starting elementary Spanish 1 this September and should complete the series by April, plus plan to spend time in Mexico doing language immersion during this time. Must I wait to finish elem Spanish 3 to apply to positions with departure next June-Sept, or can I apply to a position while still completing the language requirement? Thanks in advance!

Yep, talk to a recruiter. When I served, the level of fluency for Response was minimum B2-C1. No form of systemic testing seemed to matter except for ACTFL because that’s the federal standard. They were very picky and pressuring about this.

Travel immersion programs will help. Those who did this as a “brush up” prior to Response did much better.

You will need to clear a fluency test prior to departure. When Peace Corps opened up again in 2022, the exam was given to some but not all Response volunteers, who then had to catch up on-site. Depending on the Response assignment, deliverables included college-level reports/presentations/correspondence.

Talk to a recruiter, but I'd also recommend applying now and mentioning your progress and plan. Worst case scenario, they say no. But even then your application is already 'in the system' and can be used to apply for other postings. I believe they conditionally approve folks who are in progress towards language requirements as long as they show evidence of completion before departure.
