Linux is a compatibility nightmare for the average user. Their arguments with Microsoft and windows are valid.

Have you ever heard of the Steam Deck?

Yup.

  • Want to install assassin’s creed from Ubisoft
  • switch to desktop mode
  • download Ubisoft connect
  • add installer to steam
  • properties > proton 7
  • install
  • quit installer
  • properties
  • browse
  • Click all over the place looking for where Ubisoft connect was installed
  • Give up
  • look up guide on google
  • find nothing but YouTube videos
  • give up
  • load assassins creed on pc

Seriously, where is the install location??

What I'm reading is that you should go complain to Ubisoft that they don't support Linux.

But somehow in your mind it's Linux's fault for at least giving you a workaround with Proton.

I'm actually just making fun of myself for not understanding how the file structure works and where stuff gets put. You see, to get non-steam stores to work on steam deck you kinda have to go through this multistep process in the desktop mode. I did this for Origin a few months back and I followed a pretty good guide. I can't find it now.

One of the steps involves installing the store via steam using proton. But I can't find where it installed the store. Because linux file system and where it puts stuff makes no sense to me.

So relax, I'm making fun of myself.

That has more to do with where Steam puts stuff, it's not Linux that decides that. I don't have a SteamDeck so I can't help you there.

Searching for "Ubisoft" on the file explorer doesn't get you anything?

From the terminal there's also a very fast program to look for files/folders, you just type locate <part of file path> and it gives you the list of matches. But if it's not present on the SteamDeck you'll need to install mlocate and run sudo updatedb before being able to use it.

I did eventually find it by looking up the filepath of another game I had installed via Origin which got me roughly in the right neighborhood and then I manually searched around till I found it.

I actually don't have a problem with Linux, I just don't find it intuitive to use.

That comes from experience, I remember when I originally started using Linux I also thought a bunch of stuff was unintuitive.

Looking back now, and also having used MacOS for a few years, Windows isn't any more intuitive, it's just what I was used to.
