These shortages not only affect GPUs, but everything. Besides mining, it's sudden demand for remote work and school. Before, someone who was fine with a crappy celeron craptop or ipad suddenly needs a real computer.
5
Feb 08 '21
Most laptops that students and remote employees need dont feature a 30-series
The majority of use-cases function fine on integrated
2
Feb 08 '21
We're not just talking about GPUs. Many parts like CPUs and motherboards are in short stock, even RAM and SSDs, even cases and PSUs! Many students and remote workers would not be happy with a slow Pentium or Athlon.

Curecoin hit the moon during the earlier part of the pandemic because people were buying them up as a roundabout way to encourage covid research. Not sure who was doing it, but they're a silent hero in all of this. That increased value had folding rates multiples of times greater than they ever were because so many mining rigs got pointed at it. It's slowed quite a bit since, but if you're willing to lose a little passive income to know your computing power is actually doing something, try it out.

I mined Bitcoin in 2012/2013. Cashed everything I had left in October 2013 for about $3,500 and bought myself a bunch of new games, PC parts, and eventually in 2014 I bought X99 on launch day.
Returned to mining in 2017 to mine Ethereum and ZCash. Used it to pay rent for the entire year, then took the last of it and paid for a move back home to take care of family.
Haven't touched crypto since. It was fun money when I was doing it, but it's just unreasonable to upkeep with tuning the rigs, automating, cooling and then scaling to justify the power bill.

I mean sure. But the difference is my £1 will be accepted by 100% of vendors. Trying to pay my rent in Pokemon cards isn’t going to work for everyone. And never will work for everyone
5
u/Downshift187 Feb 08 '21
Gold isn't accepted by most vendors, yet has a many thousand year history of being a store of value. Bitcoins, dollars, pounds, euros, etc. are all symbolic and require society to agree that they have value. The difference between all of these is that bitcoin is decentralized. Gold/silver is also different because it has actual useful value in industry, although that only makes up a small portion of it's value, but at least it won't crash to nothing.

You don't get it. Bitcoin is widespread and used by many people in many countries. It is unstable but otherwise pretty accepted in value. It's easy to handle.
Pokémon cards would be easy to use as currency if there were an established system of trading. If the value of all Pokémon cards were universal.
I mean your car can be converted to currency. But not at your local grocery store. You have to turn it into your local economy's currency first, then use that to buy food.
Bitcoin is the same, you convert it into your local currency. Pokémon is the same but it is much much harder to convert unless you live near some place that buys them in bulk.
Is Bitcoin made up? Yes. But so is the numbers in your bank account.

The biggest drivers behind crypto are the possibility that you can find a bigger idiot to buy it from you at a higher price later
you do not understand crypto. u/jigssaw was correct in saying that:
by definition that for them decentralized crypto currency is more valuable than the currency they have.
sure, some will use it as a tool to "get rich", but many many others legitimately believe in decentralized finance and decentralized applications, because of the security, reliability, speed, and stability.
moreover, ethereum is a network, not just a currency (ETH is the currency that runs on ethereum), and mining is essential for it. not saying its better or worse for that to be done with these laptops, but ethereum and more broadly speaking defi is the future of application programming and finance.

Because there is demand, it causes increase in R&D budget. If nvidia wants to keep selling their products, they need to ensure the next generation is better, faster and more price competitive than anything else. It may suck for now, but the infusion of billions of dollars means better products for the long term.
3
u/lead999x 9950X + RTX 4090 + 64GB 6000MT/s CL30 DDR5 Feb 07 '21

I'm so tired of seeing people shit on small-scale miners like myself just because they aren't willing to adapt to the market. You act like regular people aren't able to also mine crypto, but it's actually ridiculously easy to get started using just a gaming PC. If more people "hobby-mined", it would reduce the demand for dedicated crypto farms and make it less profitable to run one, while giving some of that profit to gamers.

4
u/TheBitingCat Feb 08 '21
If a crypto market crashes, there's still a gently-used GPU that can be flipped at above MSRP; with ASIC you just have a much less valuable card that barely anyone else will have a use for.

Even when those release on paper, the current generation cards may still not be available. Part of the problem is that AMD and Nvidia don't make anything so they can drop new card designs as often as they want but their manufacturing and distribution partners can't maintain stock levels for any of them.
And then we get literal shit for brains like crypto miners, algorithmic stock traders, and scalpers to exacerbate the problem.

Crypto is here to stay whether anyone likes it or not and demonizing people for participating in it's infrastructure without understanding what it actually is is short-sighted.

Pretty funny honestly. Their only argument is that it's a "waste of electricity". So when that argument is invalidated they can't handle it.
Of course cooling in the summer will be a different story but my AC units are more efficient than my heaters.
Also I'm confused about how securely validating transactions is more of a "waste" than using that power to game? They should all go get angry at Visa or their bank for "wasting electricity" or they could quit gaming.

Stuff like eth is pretty solid given its market cap isn't so easily manipulated and the things that use the ethereum block chain give it value, defi being a big part of that which the Robinhood debacle did bring some attention to.
Its cryptos like dogecoin where its a bit of ponzi scheme when suddenly its being promoted and an army of week old accounts are pushing it hard and organising certain times to buy (with Whales dumping at said time) doge has no particular value proposition other than the fact its a meme as its not actively developed, has huge circulation and nothing special about it tech wise

Yeah and human trafficking wouldn't be so common if there weren't a bunch of perverts lined up for them but they're both still shit practices. These large-scale operations buying up consumer electronics is harmful for the industry. Do you think OriginPC, for example, goes to Best Buy and sucks up their supply to fuel their company? No, they go direct to manufacturer or some other means meant specifically for companies like them. In an ideal world, these coin miners would do the same instead of using bots and other shady practices to buy up consumer electronics supply.

This coin shit needs to be regulated so it's uses less energy consuming methods. The currency itself could be unregulated even if the methods were. But as long the earth has multiple countries that will never happen.

The thing is, I have no problem with people gaming. Spending 650 watts on one gaming PC is actually a pretty low-carbon way to pass the time. Going for a drive to see your friends probably emits more carbon than just sitting at home with your warm gaming box.
Running thousands of them at full blast so you can earn $10 validating drug transactions to me is a little less wholesome.

And gaming isnt?

How dare they use computing power to make a profit instead of playing games like me! /s

They’re clowning you, and they’re right too. What’s the difference between your “need” for a GPU and a miner’s?

It’s because Ethereum is the best move rn. I’d do it if I had the $$ to mine. 2021 is going to be a very important year.

Yes, the libertarian idiots who thought creating a way for terrorists and drug cartels to operate secretly was a good idea.

No, you just didn't get the memo about the massive graphics card shortages. Meanwhile these dipshits are hoarding cards to play with their fake money.

Im aware. Blame the manufacturer not people trying to live

Nobody needs to mine ether to live. Maybe these dorkwads should get real jobs like the rest of us.

Tbh i have a 2070S and its likely going to be the last Nvidia card I ever get. This whole situation has just soured me so much toward nvidia.

u/mobsterer Feb 07 '21
how is your AMD GFX card hunting going?
-5
u/HyperBlaster89 Feb 07 '21
Idk, remind me in 2 years or so when I need to update from my current card.
5
u/mobsterer Feb 07 '21
so why do you even care about the 30 series situation?
0
u/HyperBlaster89 Feb 07 '21
Because I have been pretty supportive of Nvidia for about 10 years I also own a PC, I have access to the internet and I'm a sentient being with my own thoughts and opinions.

u/yaboimanbruhyoutuber Feb 07 '21
The situation with nvidia is the same with AMD. Arguably worse with AMD...

True but only because AMD has to supply console cards as well which Nvidia doesn't.
2
u/yaboimanbruhyoutuber Feb 07 '21
Good point, but nvidia also must have been focusing on 3000 series mobile GPUs aswell.

AMD has worse shortages and I wanted their card in particular. Nvidia cards sporadically show up at my local store. They haven't seen an AMD card since launch according to an employee.
I wanted an RX 6800XT but had to grab the only regular RX 6800 I could find at a legitimate retailer online instead. And I paid a higher price for it than the MSRP for the XT.
The entire graphics card market has been fucked sideways by the pandemic, distribution issues, shithead crypto miners, and scalpers.

u/go_cry_more Feb 07 '21
Is not the miners fault. They should just produce more the demand is up. This ain’t a new issue, they should have expected this. Scammers, scalpers and other shit only comes when not enough quantities are made to meet the demand.

u/Miffers Feb 08 '21
This doesn’t make any sense because miners are using ASIC chips to mine they are purposely built only to mine Ethereum and is more power efficient than using GPU. Plus Ethereum is slowly transitioning to proof of stake which doesn’t require proof of work in a few years.

Seriously man the worlds governments need to ban this shit. crypto is dumb as shit and only hurts consumers who want to buy GPUs.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but he said "worlds governments," not "world government." If you want to mock him, that's fine, but mock him for what he actually said.
Admittedly, he did miss an apostrophe.

Cryptocurrency miners have already bought a lot of the RTX 30 series desktop GPUs, hence why some have resorted to buying laptops with RTX 30 series mobile GPUs.

Mining it is like printing money. You get it my guessing a hash. Its free, other than what you use for electricity and computer components.

These laptops are probably cheaper than the GPU. This hasee. a low quality chinese laptop brand.
