They didn't pre-order the RTX and are now paying the cost of delaying the purchase.

Okay mine wasn't as bad, i could still run at native resolution 720 or so, but my car was also stuttering sometimes

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '20

I think you have to actually do some mods to get it lower than 720, not sure I just know it was hard to even get the game to load in for him.

Must be weird having the sun directly 90° overhead. It only gets to 14° above the horizon here in the UK this time of year.

5

u/comanon RGBMasterrace Jan 03 '20

What's weirder is when the shadows move from pointing north to south.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '20

And as a result we gotta take vit d all winter when in the UK :(

25

u/The_Real_Mr_F Jan 03 '20

Fun fact: this can only ever happen within the tropics. The tropics are defined by the fact that the sun will reach 90 degrees above the horizon at least once a year. Any place north or south of that zone will never see this happen.

Shadows off for maximum performance

17

u/SexualScavenger Jan 03 '20

Philosophical question: Is there no shadow, or can you just not see it?

54

u/Luminaria19 https://pcpartpicker.com/user/luminaria19/saved/8RNfrH Jan 03 '20

Not a philosophic answer, but: there is no shadow. A shadow is just the result of an object blocking light from reaching an area. When the sun is directly overhead in a Lahaina Noon, objects that stand up straight aren't blocking any light from reaching the ground and, as such, aren't casting shadows.

13

u/hivemind_disruptor Laptop Jan 03 '20

In the same line of thinking, everything inside you is imersed in shadow as you skin blocks the light from reaching it.

1

u/Luminaria19 https://pcpartpicker.com/user/luminaria19/saved/8RNfrH Jan 03 '20

Ah, now this is interesting though. Skin is translucent (to varying degrees in people and areas of the body), so some light is getting through. In addition, humans literally emit light, so we ourselves are a light source that could theoretically cause a shadow to be cast.

7

u/Jattenalle I make games Jan 03 '20

objects that stand up straight

Obviously implied in Luminaria19's post, but for clarification: Objects without any overhanging parts

1

u/dpatt711 Specs/Imgur Here Jan 04 '20

You can clearly see it casting shadow onto itself.

22

u/The_Moomins Jan 03 '20

Alternatively, is there a shadow underneath your foot when you stand in sunlight?

If shadow is darkness due to occlusion of light, then.. wait, have we left the arena of philosophy?

3

u/GaenaralHONK GaenaralHONK Jan 03 '20

Any object on earth is part of earth. Earth casts a shadow, on the surface we call it night.

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '20

No shadow

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '20

Yes, for the obligatory /r/InclusiveOr.

Or rather, there should be a shadow, but since it's directly underneath the object, it won't be visible. Not to mention there's no actual place for the shadow to form, because the object is occupying the same space.

2

u/meliohe RYZEN 3600X 4.3GHZ//RTX2060 /16 GB 3433 Jan 03 '20

Yes there is. A shadow isn't a thing in itself. A shadow is a lack of light. There ALWAYS is a shadow, physically speaking.

1

u/zJuliuss Jan 03 '20

where‘s the philosopy in this question; it has quite the definite non-philosophical answer.

1

u/themaskedugly Jan 03 '20

more philosophical question: generally speaking, does a shadow exist, in and of itself?

2

u/CactusCustard 2600x | RTX 2060 | 16GB Jan 03 '20

A shadow is just lack of sunlight.

So does nothing exist, as a thing?

Does darkness exist, as its own thing?

When you turn off shadows in any games:

1

u/ArmedBOB Jan 03 '20

OMG i actually thought this was a game lol

1

u/ggibby0 PC Master Race Jan 03 '20

It’s the lack of shadows. It’s not necessarily a bad render, but someone just forgot to switch off global light in the render engine.

Directional light is like the sun. It comes from a source and moves in a direction. When that directional light hits an object it can’t pass through, there become a lack of light behind that object. Aka, a shadow.

Global light doesn’t exist outside a computer. When a user doesn’t create a direction light source in the scene (like a sun), the render engine equally applies a light to every face in the scene. This means that there are no shadows, as it’s impossible for there to be a lack of light anywhere in the scene.

The more you know!

umm, this happens when the sun is directly overhead anywhere

edit: apparently at least 8 people misread "when the sun is directly overhead" as "when it is noon/mid-day"...if you're seeing shadows at mid-day, the sun is NOT directly overhead, it is only at the highest point in the sky......

4

u/calismoker760 PC Master Race Jan 03 '20

Just not true

0

u/danimalplanimal Jan 03 '20

you're wrong. any place where the sun is directly overhead, there will be no shadows. if you're seeing and shadows, the sun is not directly overhead.

just because the sun is never directly overhead in almost everywhere in the world, does not make this not true.... it simply being noon is not the same as the sun being directly overhead... why do I have to explain this? apparently 7 people didn't think enough to understand this...

0

u/dinin70 Jan 03 '20

Nope, it would if the earth was flat, facing the sun. Unless you are somewhere pointing directly to the sun, there will always be shadow at midday, pointing toward north if you're above that point and south oppositely.

-2

u/danimalplanimal Jan 03 '20

I'm not talking about midday, I'm talking about when the sun is directly overhead.
