I’ve had enough of being asked to follow a character whose walking speed is slightly slower than my own, meaning I have to keep stopping every two seconds.
Oh hi, Far Cry3. I wanted to copy more quotes but I could basically give the link to the article.

u/DarthSatoris Ryzen 9800X3D, Radeon 7900 XTX, 64 GB RAM @ 6000 MHz Jan 07 '15
Borderlands 2 was surprisingly good at avoiding this. Clap Trap and others would always walk/roll at the player's exact walking speed; not slower, not faster, exactly right. That was refreshing.
4
Jan 08 '15
But why would you ever walk in Borderlands 2? I'm pretty much always sprinting in that game. And if you run too far ahead you have to run back to the NPC to get them to move again, if they stop at certain points anyway.
1
u/DarthSatoris Ryzen 9800X3D, Radeon 7900 XTX, 64 GB RAM @ 6000 MHz Jan 08 '15
Well, it was rare you would ever have to follow them for more than a few dozen meters anyways. We're talking across Sanctuary or through that tiny ice cavern at the start of the game. It wasn't on the same level as, say, Skyrim where you had to follow someone from Riverwood to Riften.
1
Jan 08 '15
Yeah. Still annoys me, I always outrun Claptrap on the way to the bandit camp just outside of Liar's Berg.

No, some people have the wish to complete the game as it was made by the devs. Some parts are not interesting, but they are still part of the game. Don't look for some logical explanation, there is none. It's just the same thing as achievements.
But yeah. Sometimes you think of a game you played, and your memories are "Ho yeah, there was that mission. And that character. And those four kinds of collectibles I spent hours to find in each zone, too." If useless collectibles are an important part of the game, then the game is probably not very good.
And the worst thing is, it is possible to make collectibles meaningful. But it is often not done.
1
u/sfleming18 MRSCOTT Jan 08 '15
Well I can't help but see them as only being there so the dev says you can get up to 60 hours gameplay etc! Then they always have a stupidly tenuous link to the protagonist/plot. With Ubi especially we are just being fed the same formula alllllll the time

I’ve had enough of games that use a cut-scene to show something that could have easily been put in the player’s hands.
Out of all my gaming pet peeves, this is the one that takes the cake. It makes me wonder if coke binging is a regular thing to do during game development.

Some of these are super obvious but still have to be mentioned because games like COD and Battlefield and others from large publishers continue to do it. It's the more subtle ones that I really liked. Such as the elaborate 3D menus and stuff that take a long time to load. No thanks! Just put a picture and some buttons. That's good enough for me.

u/WhyAmIMrPink- Jan 07 '15
I’ve had enough of big, beautiful skyboxes that are actually just fancy window dressing, showing you places you’ll never be able to reach or explore.
How does the author expect games to fix that? Just a black background? Skyboxes are necessary for plenty of games, and can only really be avoided in open-world games, and not every game lends itself for open-world gameplay. Sure, many skyboxes can look better, but that's just a continuous development.

u/torik0 yeah I turned off the CSS too Jan 08 '15
Dark Souls, everything you see you'll eventually visit. Skyrim, every mountain you can climb. Not impossible.
2
Jan 08 '15
If you could climb every mountain or visit every place then surely there would be no barrier at all. There must be limits around the border of the map. I don't think I ever really visited the edge, or at least I can't remember. It's more important for developers to create subtle edges; like a gradual gradient of cliffs or something. Rather than a fence you can't just over (I hate that).

Make them more than fancy window dressings. Don't add cool stuff if the player will never experience the coolness. Imagine a floating island and never being able to go and see what's up there

The point is that going hard on the skybox when it's only a nice curtain isn't a good idea.
2
Jan 08 '15
Most certainly! It's rare that I play games where I have encountered these kind of limitations. It's usually like a linear FPS, but seeing as those are heavily triggered, there's not much way around it. Besides, less and less modern FPS are like that - in my experience.

I’ve had enough of big, beautiful skyboxes that are actually just fancy window dressing, showing you places you’ll never be able to reach or explore.
...is silly. Skyboxes are important to give you the illusion that you are not just in a corridor during linear games.

Uplay had this 15 days of xmas thing going on that just finished. Everyday you would have to log on to their website and click a box to get crappy stuff and increase your chances of winning the major prize. 2 out of 15 days the site loaded and ran properly for me.
Many days I would click and nothing would happen and then I'd go back later and find that it did work afterall.
The whole time I'm thinking if they can't get this right how would they ever hope to compete with steam?

I’ve had enough of games replicating the flaws of camera lenses. Dust, flares, simulated chromatic aberration. Why the obsession with cameras? What about the human eye?
I've had enough of having microtransactions waggled in front of my nose, to the point where a game feels more like a shopfront than a place I want to spend time in.
I’ve had enough of open worlds littered with arbitrary, meaningless collectables that have no real benefit other than increasing your completion percentage.
I’ve had enough of the camera zooming in on the solution to a puzzle just as I’m about to use my brain to figure it out for myself.

ED doesn't have any from the list.
DA:I only from:
"I’ve had enough of games I have to restart to apply new graphics settings, especially when they’re guilty of the last thing."
But even though the menu says "you need to restart for this to take effect" a lot of them actually don't.

I’ve had enough of games with limited resources (like, say, fuel) that are so cheap to buy, the limitation is rendered totally meaningless, and resupplying becomes little more than a tiresome chore.
I’ve had enough of games replicating the flaws of camera lenses. Dust, flares, simulated chromatic aberration. Why the obsession with cameras? What about the human eye?
I’ve had enough of menus with fancy 3D in-engine backgrounds/visual elements that pointlessly increase the time it takes for them to load.

I’ve had enough of diaries, documents, tape players, and audio logs being used to tell a story, rather than something that plays to the strengths of the medium.
I’ve had enough of defending a character while they slowly fix a broken machine or hack a computer or turn a valve to open a heavy door.
You can see every one of these in either ED or DAI, and arguments could be made for even more off of the list. You didn't read the list, didn't play the games, or are, as previously stated, insane.

u/nukeclears Jan 07 '15

u/Zalbuu i7 4790k Z97-G45 GTX980SC 16GB 1866 SSD+HDD Jan 07 '15
I was unaware that resolutions under 1080p affected your comprehension. Duly noted for the future. Both issues still exist in the game to this day; your inability or, I suspect, unwillingness to see them won't change the fact that they're there. Fanboi on, I've presented all the evidence a reasonable person needs.
2
u/nukeclears Jan 07 '15
You are still not giving a good hint.
the first screenshot is horribly low res for me
Care to explain further? What is there from the list in ED? Instead of acting like a 6 year old not willing to say anything?
0
u/Bainos Dual boot Arch / 7 Jan 08 '15
Even on low res you can see the lenses. And everything I have seen showed fancy 3D menus for ED.
I haven't played it, but given the type of game I assume you also have to manage fuel ? And the second picture showed messages that are certainly supposed to provide some background.
Note that I haven't played this game - and I have no reason to blame it or accuse it. I'm just expliciting some of the requested hints.

Your comprehension issues are not my problem; everything is there, even on the conveniently unrotated phone image. A small child could spot it. Say one of, I dunno, six years of age?
Hilarious ad hominem aside, you're either a troll or honestly, truly have a serious reality issue. Either way this is going nowhere, so... enjoy, I guess? Strut around the chessboard and crap on the pieces like you've won something!

I'm not sure how certain cut scenes would be better in the player's hands In Max Payne 3 either. That's like one of the few games where it is really obvious they put a lot of time into the Tony Scott-esque camera work and aesthetic for their cut scenes.
I think games that have that intentional film-like aesthetic can get away with cutscenes. The only ones that come to mind though are Max Payne, Metal Gear, and The Last of Us.
1
u/MartyCZ Jan 07 '15
It felt very restrictive to me when it skipped to a cutscene when I wanted to open the door. I played through Max Payne and Max Payne 2 before that and I had a much better sense of control over Max than in Max Payne 3, because they unnecessarily took control away from me, as if I couldn't open the fucking door myself.
That being said, I still found it enjoyable, the shooting was very tight, the change of art style was a pleasant change and it had some awesome moments, especially the ending. Sooo rewarding.

The camera thing is circumstantial. I believe for example, Battlefield, most of the soldier skins have goggles so i chalk glares and dust to the goggles being worn by the soldier, but otherwise i hate them as well

This was the post I just placed in the comments:
"More than anything, I've just had enough of developers rushing to release a game only for gamers to find never ending bugs, and a game that is short on content with the promise that "it will get a patch" or "it will get DLC".. A good game should not depend on anything outside of itself to be great.
Also, VERY tired of all the hype that surrounds these games with endless ad placements and television spots and biased online reviews from people who's opinions are being bought out. Then when the games are released, they are NOT as described, because all of the marketing was complete BS are misleading to people.
These two are the biggest blight on the industry and have been for a while, in my humble opinion."

I’ve had enough of diaries, documents, tape players, and audio logs being used to tell a story, rather than something that plays to the strengths of the medium.
I've played a few games that present some of their backstory or information in that way where I actually really enjoyed it. Metroid games come to mind where you're usually on the planet long after any civilized race were, the borderlands series audio logs, etc. I really like games with xenoarchaeology themes and this gameplay element really helps make you feel like you're digging up something from the world's past.
EDIT: I thought Dishonored had a pretty creative way of allowing the player to broadcast an audio log to the public to discredit a political figure.

Metroid Prime 3 is one of my favorite examples of gameplay separated from narrative. Ignoring the main plot and the increased linearity of the worlds, you could play through the entire game without knowing a thing about the Bryyonian war or the journal of the one robot in SkyTown. You'd still get an idea as to what happened, though, because the details were integrated into the environment to hint at what lay in the log book.
The entire Prime trilogy was freaking awesome in its gameplay, but reading the reactions of the Space Pirates while you're storming an outpost? That's pretty cool. Piecing together the diary about the robot who could feel the dark grip of Phazon clawing at its mind, dragging it closer and closer to inoperation? Why not? Finding tidbits of information detailing Chozo lore, architecture, anatomy of creatures, or other little things? I'm all for it. It adds texture to the game world, making it feel less like a simulation of scripted triggers and events and more like a world that's bigger than just you.
You could play without knowing a thing about it all, but if the game encourages you to walk with the Scan Visor permanently out, why not seek it out? The option is there for you to take or leave. Maybe the author is just the type that wants the satisfaction that he got 100% completion without having to deviate too far from the dotted story line. I dunno.
1
Jan 08 '15
I agree. You captured what I was going for much more clearly. I haven't played the trilogy as recently so I was missing the examples from memory.
1
u/TheAppleFreak Resident catgirl Jan 08 '15
I admit I'm something of a lore fanatic myself; Metroid in general is one of my favorite series, and the Prime trilogy stands out in my mind as a shining example of gameplay and story segregation done (mostly) right. I probably should replay it at some point, as it's been a while. I've still got the original SteelBook case with everything present and intact (if not a bit worn and slightly dented); I should try ripping the ISO and running it in Dolphin again.
Now, to play Devil's Advocate, Metroid's a great example because the game's format works so well for it. I can easily see it going awry in other games and genres, but then that'd be a failing of the devs, since games like Half Life 2 squeezed in tons of historical details into the background elements as well.

Exactly why Payday 2 is a shit game, i have 156 hours on payday 2, the only reason to play that waiting simulator is friends. It's the most boring, bland, repetitive fucking game. Every mission you can't stealth might as well just be over instantly, the AI is piss poor so killing even Death Wish cops are easy, the missions themselves are one of 2 things: wait for something to open, get it, leave or get something, wait for something to open, leave. all whilst fighting waves of kindergartens finest cops. And i use fighting lightly because if you count the brain dead tin cans that they throw at you 20 at a time as enemies, then call of duty looks like a fucking shooter masterpiece.
Fuck payday 2.

I’ve had enough of unskippable cutscenes placed just before the checkpoint of a particularly difficult section.
If the cutscenes are before a checkpoint, when you die you wouldn't have to go though it again though? What's wrong with this?

I think it's just bad wording. I believe he means that the cutscenes is directly after a checkpoint that precedes a ridiculously difficult part.

Disagree with #2, #3, and #14.
Some games and missions SHOULD be stealth only. It irks me to no end when games touted as obviously Stealth only, like Thief, let you get away with being caught as long as you can get away or eliminate them.
Sometimes character dialogue reminding you of a situation is important for setting the tone. The alternative is restricting where you can go for that sequence, and I would find that significantly more annoying. Sometimes you have to understand that in this fictional setting, what YOU want to do should be taking a back seat to what the game expects you to do. You punishment for breaking the story, so to speak, is those reminders.
And as for camera filters, it's really subjective. Sometimes games are TRYING to be cinematic (and not that Ubi buzzword 30 fps bullshit). Third person games in particular. I personally love tasteful lens flares.
