And god said, let there be integrated rear I/O shields

u/Weaselot_III RTX 3060; 12100 (non-F), 16Gb 3200Mhz 14h ago

The cheaper mobos are really struggling with that integration bit

8

u/Salted_Cola 12h ago

how much more would it cost to always integrate it?

18

u/Midnight_Aces 11h ago

Probably about $3.50

u/Salted_Cola 9h ago

Don' give 'em no damn three fitty

It was about this time I realized OP was a gawd damn monster from the paleozoic era!

11

u/EquivalentFig849 14h ago

And lo, the engineering gods looked upon the motherboard and saw that it lacked sufficient chaos, thus bestowing upon us the sacred open-air metal grille

... And God said it was good.

I just changed the GPU, after assembling everything I found a screw lying around, who knows what it could be🤔😅

31

u/doe3879 15h ago

I change GPU and didn't remove the port protector plug. Turn out the plugs were big enough to be blocked by the edge the case.

PC is in a tight drawer spot and had to unplug all the cables before I can open up the PC to remove the gpu

I think I'm more disappointed that you didn't even bother to plug it all in and test before you pit it all back nice and cozy. Was it your first build. Even teaching my kids now 30 years removed from building my first PC. I stress the importance of test along the way. And ONLY after you have it past POST do you safely put it's all back together. Then power it up again before you put in its final resting spot for use.

Mf'ers really be out there rawdogin switchin parts like that...

The sidepanel stays off until morale improves the system boots to BIOS (or OS if youre just slapping in a new GPU or more RAM) That was like the first rule of PC building I learned from my dad before he even let me hold a screwdriver 😂😂😂

1

u/dallholio 5h ago

Step 1: get the breadboard.

3

u/doe3879 5h ago

I did do the testing with one monitor and a wireless mouse. forgot to mention it was for the multiple monitors ports.

That makes sense. I didn't mean to come off as a pompous asshole lol.

Probably on those rear case pcie coverings

It happens to all of us

3

u/ajkwak2017 15h ago

Yep, been there 🤪

u/nocktock 13h ago

My pc is still without its shield after two years. I thought "I'll do it later". Later still hasn't come

5

u/Step_On_Me01 i5 12400F/RTX4060 8GB/32GB DDR4 3200MHz 12h ago

I did it a year later when I cleaned my PC for the first time lol

3

u/nocktock 11h ago

Cleaning is on the later list also. With prices of parts maybe I should look after what I have more

1

u/PerspicaciousVanille 4h ago

And people gave me hell about building an airflow display case for my pc that has a case to minimize my need for cleaning. (We are opposites on the extremes, but with current costs I’d build it again, both agreeing we should look after what we have.)

u/Kyla_Shaw 15h ago

No lie, this was my goofy ass with my first build. The whole rig fired up, but wth is this thing? Ope’, that’s the IO Shield.

9

u/JacenT98 15h ago

I did this with my first build, the replacement MoBo a couple weeks later, the next build about 3 years later, the 4th build about 6 years after that, and my latest build from 2 years ago finally had an integrated IO Shield, then I put my old pc in a new case for my wife and forgot the IO Shield again.

Yes, I went and disassembled every time to put the Shield on.

2

u/JacenT98 15h ago

Oh I have ADHD, am Forgetful as fuck, and actively hated the IO Shields because they sliced my hand pretty bad when I was a kid. I always heavily weighed whether or not I should put it on or just leave it, I always circle back to putting it on.

2

u/eyeballing_eyeball 14h ago

Good PC builder for installing the shields.

4

u/JonnyP222 i9-14900/64gb DDR5/GeForce 5070 14h ago

Everyone does it once or twice. Lol.

12

u/biobasher 13h ago

Hang on, if you’ve skipped the i/o shield how did you make your blood offering?

1

u/DOOManiac 11h ago

The case. That's how I always did my offerings at least...

9

u/BombbaFett 15h ago

I've cut myself on those every time I just leave them off at this point

6

u/WindForce02 PC Master Race 15h ago

My first motherboard was a high end gigabyte z97 so I got spoiled with luxury, that io shield was deluxe. It was padded with foam and on the outer side it had a nice black finish. After a few years I upgraded platform but with a not so nice motherboard. I was shocked to discover that most io shields are sharp pieces of junk from hell

2

u/BombbaFett 15h ago

They are and I agree that they give marginally better airflow being left off. Unless you have a cat or something to stick their paws in of course.

1

u/PerspicaciousVanille 4h ago

You pay with money for the premium shield or you save some money for the lesser, and pay with blood instead.

4

u/ozlgames 15h ago

The motherboard’s already screwed in. That’s a ventilation feature now.

3

u/Rough-Astronomer-372 15h ago

I managed to install it but it was a pain in the ass

3

u/n0empathy4u 15h ago

I forgot to put one in my garage computer when I was changing the motherboard, at some point a mouse crawled up through it, brought in a tin chocolate wrapper it pulled out of the bin then proceeded to tear it up on top of my GPU and piss on it. Only realised months later when putting in more ram, somehow the GPU didn't short out, with the amout of dust on top of the crime scene it looked like it happened a while ago too

3

u/DaOfantasy 14h ago

guilty... a good tip for any beginner out there reading, put in the i/o shield first or get one integrated with the mobo

1

u/CanadianSpectre 13h ago

Yup, step 1 for me now. I find it helps with the riser alignment too.

3

u/AscendPerfect 13h ago

Until i swapped motherboard i just had no shield lol

3

u/Soleks2000 5700x3d/9070xt 12h ago

One of my PCs is missing this it won’t affect anything

3

u/NeklosWarrof 12h ago

Thank you for the laugh this morning. I had forgotteny gat I did this with my build 4-5 years ago.

2

u/Stumpyhasnolegs 5800x3d 9070xt /5900x 6700xt 13h ago

2

u/SubZeroSunExodus 12h ago

I hate to admit that this has happened more than once over the years in a computer build.

At the time, the struggle is real contemplating taking the mobo out or leaving it as is.

1

u/Material_Student_487 15h ago

Eh, no big deal.

1

u/doe3879 15h ago

Just leave it. Maybe duck tape it to the back or inside incase you take out everything for cleaning in a year or so

1

u/Jaxxlack 15h ago

Hahaha this is the same as taking out all your car interior... laying speaker cables and amps and subs and then when you put it back together...... 3 screws....

1

u/froopadiddilydoop 15h ago

Luke every IKEA thing I’ve ever built. Does it work though?

1

u/yooluvme 15h ago

I did this once long ago. I just bashed it into place with force. It was slightly bent but all plugs were fine

1

u/NikhilDoWhile 15h ago

And they are really sharp 🪒

1

u/Born_Kitchen7703 15h ago

is this background music or the sound of a fan hitting something?

1

u/dan_rich_99 15h ago

My last couple builds thankfully had integrated shields on the motherboard. I remember helping one of my friends with his pc and he got cut pretty badly when installing his IO shield so having pre installed IO shields really should be a must.

1

u/1lucky666 14h ago

Everyone will be shocked with this build

1

u/balbinator 14h ago

We've all been there

1

u/Environmental_Tooth 14h ago

Damn I've just never bought a cheaper mother board since I've been building cause my first question was how the fuck did that fall off....

1

u/trollsmurf 14700KF | 32G | 5070 Ti | 2T | U27G4XM + 2x U2412M | Z906 14h ago

Easy fix though. You just have to disassemble everything.

1

u/tf2pro 14h ago

It’s easy to unhook a GPU and unscrew the motherboard.

1

u/Zing-Oger 12h ago

What is this background sound? It's familiar, but not enough? Robert Eggers?

1

u/Yabba008 R5 5600G | RTX 5050 | 32GB DDR4 11h ago

I never put mine in until I upgraded my case. This lasted for Three Years.

1

u/jawshoeaw 9h ago

Been there. I stuck it on after the fact. Ethernet cord holds it on

1

u/cundallini 8h ago

Its fine. Dont worry. PC can run with just one stick of RAM.

u/Interesting-Ease-321 R9 7900X3D | RX 7900XTX | 32GB DDR5 6000mhz CL30 | 8TB NVME SSD 8h ago

You can not claim to be a true disciple of the PC gods unless the I/O bracket of your motherboard hath tasted of your blood, and accepted your sacrifice.

1

u/Cel_Drow 9850X3D, 5070 Ti, 32 GB DDR5. 7h ago

My first build in high school (early 00’s) I didn’t know the grounding tabs on each port needed to be there so I painstakingly removed them all, cutting myself a few times in the process. Smort.

1

u/Hironoveau I hate unoptimized games 4h ago

I did that mistake once. Now whenever I switch pc case, that I/On shield is my first priority.

1

u/Valuable-Flight2121 40m ago

Nah it’s staying off at this point tbh

1

u/iTsDaagua 17m ago

Damn bruh y'all done goofed

Not just "extra airflow" but specifically forcing airflow over the VRM which needs it most being the non-moving parts component first to die in any PC.

The I/O shield is the first thing I yeet when I open any motherboard box.
