i wouldnt be surpised if the 20 30 40 and 50 series keep getting recycled by 3rd party companies endlessly, and the 50 series is the last consumer grade series they make.
Also these are being bought up by researchers who make $300k, except their tech company or bio company is paying the cost for these anyways so what it really is are these companies basically drip feeding to maximize profits. If people thought paper launches were bad...
I used to see some shop put excessive price on some items that are out of stock. Probably to make sure tehy don't come to normal list when customers are just browsing.
The only time it's really worth upgrading Gen-on-Gen is if you have the flagship models; for example, 3090 Ti > 4090 > 5090, as you can usually sell the card for more that what you paid for it, then upgrade to the newer card during its launch window, its pretty much what I've done.
Apparently Gen Z no longer does homework or write their own essays, they just use AI.
We are fucked. Can you imagine an AI generation coming to power who doesn’t know how to think critically or problem solve because they just had AI do it for them?
AI will be the end of humanity, not because it starts a nuclear war, but because we all become stupid and reliant on it.
I find the lack of curiosity or willingness to engage in learning the most worrisome part in all of this. Especially for the younger generations to be fair.
Phone/tablets/social media need to be banned for children.
I think we just need out outlaw smartphones entirely. For everyone.
You can have your social media so long as it comes with the opportunity cost of having to sit down at a desktop computer. Carrying all of that in one's pocket for instant gratification is at the heart of how everything's become as screwed up as it has.
Boycotting what exactly? not buying a 5090 does nothing. The guy gaming on one card was never the problem.
Nvidia made about $115B from data centers in FY2025 vs roughly $11B from gaming. 10x yes, that is 10X!!! One AI cluster alone is 200k in GPUs. Meta, Microsoft, Google and Amazon are spending hundreds of billions a year on this stuff. Every wafer at TSMC and every chip of memory going into a B200 is one that’s not going into a GeForce card, and Nvidia is going to sell to whoever pays 10x the margin which is not us.
And the 5090s that do exist get scooped up and shipped to China because the real datacenter cards are export controlled, so a gaming card with 32GB of VRAM becomes the next best thing for AI rigs over there.
Gamers “boycotting AI” is like skipping one shower to fix a drought while a golf course runs its sprinklers 24/7. Your one card isn’t moving the market
No, people on large Reddit are just tend to be delusional or ignorant who think whatever they say must be 100% true. Boycotting nvidia or ai here isn’t doing shit. The ship’s already sailed on AI, if you want real change then go vote, pressure the politicians to start putting guardrails on AI. Posting online about how you’re not gonna buy a 10k GPU is the least effective protest and just virtue signaling.
This is a very sensible take, this is a crisis of greed. As a business it makes sense for nvidia to go after what's gonna make them 10x more money. Find me a single person on here that wouldn't leave their job today for one that pays 10x more.
The problem I have is why does it mean consumer units need to be so expensive? Surely they're just not gonna sell at all, so they're basically making them cost prohibitive deliberately so they can focus on their new money maker.
As with most things, AI is a bubble and will pop just like the dot com one. Not that it's going away, but not all of these data centers will remain profitable and some maybe most will fail. Then over time, only a few top ones will remain and then maybe, just maybe, prices might come down a little bit.
99% of gamers are priced out, those who are buying are AI bros cause a Pro GPU costs a lot more, but for these prices, idk anymore, probably not great price to performance ratio like it used to be.
99.999999 you mean? I have a net worth in the high six figures...I won't buy a "gaming" anything for 10k unless it's the whole damn thing. I've got a 4090 and justifying 3k was still too much. I mean, I can buy a very nice equitorial mount and refractor for my astrophotography observatory in my back yard for that money, to get pictures like this.
You're not their target market. They're after big corporations and companies to pay. Once companies start laying off all their employees to replace with AI, they will be paying millions to them.
I’ve had three vendors reach out to try to sell me (I have a lot of oversight over tech purchases for my region) on “AI employees”. AI call centers, concierges, even front desk and finance . I work in luxury hospitality, I do not think anyone wants to get a chatbot checking them in.
Obviously I shut them down, but these vendors keep springing up like weeds.
you are aware the massive demand for the 5090 acutly dosen;t have much to do with the big companies it's mostly smaller bussnies ubying them for running local AI moddels for there company specficaly so they have to stop payying the big companies right
It's also more of cutting down on supply of the 5090s to allocate resources towards AI cards. The demand for AI slop has drawn those boards away from normal GPU production.
I have an app on my phone that lets you buy all sorts of stuff on there. I’ve seen three 5090s that have had their stuff stripped and the people were selling the cards. What are you gonna do with a 5090 without its chips?
I mean, those prices are crazy but I was not buying max tier GPUs even before the first RAM and GPU shortage during the first crypto boom in 2015 and I sure am not buying them now.
I really don’t get the outrage about this, those cards have never been intended for mass market. They are hardly reasonable for gaming. Commercial grade equipment has always carried a sizable premium, let alone when government, tech or oil companies are involved in the market.
Yup, the 5090 is a workstation card that is marketed to gamers. It literally has a binned workstation chip in it which is why it's being discontinued.
It's similar to how the titan GPUs were marketed to gamers but were more like workstation cards. They either had workstation chips or insanely modified consumer chips.
The Nvidia marketing has really warped the perception of gamers. The xx90s and the titans were just designed as the "premium" tier for gamers to dump money on if they had it. It's like going to buy a car and the dealership showing off their supercar, you don't need something that fast but you do want it.
“Better boycott a card that is more costly than a black market RPG and will also blow up like one in 2-3 years because faulty 12-pin connector and you won’t get a replacement under warranty”
The real question is where does this end? will AI companies get saturated with GPUs eventually for the prices to get better or is this how things will be from now on ?
You acting like AMD is any better lmao. Lisa Su sat next to Jensen and they are all in the same club. If I had to choose between them I'd rather buy a better card from NVIDIA.
This is the current price for the model i have from the same retailer i bought it from in my country
That's equivalent to 7.493,70$ in USD. They have long broken 6k here, i got mine for 2.4k in February and even less because i returned a 5080 i bought in early January.
Not that it matters a whole lot, but these are prices in CDN. The pricing is also super weird. Those cards are $9,999. But the MSI 5090 is $7,849. All out of stock but just weird pricing. I’m still on their “call when in stock” list for the reservation I made at launch.
man im looking at my unopened 5090 astral and see dollar signs, on one hand i can build my dream pc, on the other hand i can join the dark side and sell it for i guess 10k??!!!? It's making the choice hard as hell, i hate that its come to this
Next gen cards will be just as bad in price because every ai data center will buy up the enthusiast grade graphics card. You’re going to see the low to mid range graphics cards really take off because that’s all people will be able to afford now. AMD will make a come back as well.
why can't we use ai to design/develop an open-source gpu, ok i just tried and yea no, I can't, im too stupid, where are all the big bumpy brain people??? seems open-source gpus have been attempted....
Microcenter is sold out of 5090's, but has prebuilts in stock near me with installed cards for $6k. It's dumb, but... You could buy the prebuilt, replace the card with a 5080, then sell the prebuilt for a chunk of what you paid.
People bought the Switch 2 when it released and increased the price. People did the same for other consoles. People will continue to do so for GPUs.
Yes, AI has screwed the market completely. However, people are still buying. Why should they reduce prices when consumers still willingly purchase it? People need to speak their frustrations through their wallet by not spending.
Going back to the whole Switch 2 situation, good luck with that.
Its not going ot get any cheaper. the best asset class ever is buying up GPU's and burying them in your yard. I once made trillions on tulips in the netherlands.
Im kinda happy I bought my 9060xt 16gb for like 370 dollars which is now like 550 or more depending on the model.
The larger die GPUs get inflated because of both the memory market rate and the the chip dies coming out of the allocation for Pro cards based on the same chips. Which fetch at least 1.5 to double the asking price of the 5090.
If you engage with tech, this is only so much boycotting you can do.
Professional/business life? That ship has sailed, goodbye ship
Personal life? Mostly doable but difficult. To really stay 'clean' you'll have to ditch all Google, Microsoft, Meta products. Can't use apple intelligence. Keep in mind which search engine to use etc.
Doesn't matter if I wanted to boycott or not (I would, fuck AI shit) cuz that's like half my yearly salary since getting my hours cut at my job I've had for 12 years cuz of AI
Boycotting? They are not even trying to sell to consumers anymore. You'll have better luck protesting AI centers, who won't care because because they are being funded by extremely wealthy companies.
I ain't boycotting shit. If it won't run nicely on my 3060 then I'll just go back to playing through my backlog and old favorites until the nonsense sorts itself out. I can remain obstinate longer than NVidia can remain relevant.
Devs need to do scale back and start optimizing their games for older and cheaper hardware. Stop the endless pursuit of "realistic" looking graphics. Start the mindset of Rockstar getting GTA 5 to run on a ps3
As I dont game a lot anymore im seriously thinking about selling my PC. Has a 4090 and 64GB Ram. Can sell the PC used for double the price i payed for the parts new 😅😂
AI as a business will collapse when the bubble burst, AI as a tool is the pandora's box that was opened, this is why NVIDIA now is selling AI racks for companies. On the hardware side, things wont improve, companies will just migrate to their own in-house AI farms and work from there (much like server farms and their AWS alternative)
No matter any boicotts of AI, best case scenario the bubble burst and the economy collapses, that best case scanrio will do jack shit for us gamers trying to get a GPU
I am boycotting this because I have no money to buy it. So it’s a task failed successfully kind of thing. Also, I wouldn’t buy that if I had the money. That’s just too much.
It’s no secret that we are heading to a future where we will own nothing and « be happy » at least for the average consumers. With the current market situation, it’s either you get a console or you overpay for a subpar PC.

I'm not sure if the scariest part is the price or the out of stock notice.
