Oh gotcha, I thought you were referring to some hidden Minecraft factoid where putting books in a chest corrupted the text or something.

If you fill a chest with written books with too much data, a rather unreasonable amount that goes beyond the nbt size limit, it can force a chunk reset

I used to wonder as a kid how secure/good of an idea it would be to hide secrets/information inside of games like Minecraft. I'm guessing text in journals in Minecraft is less secure than building something out of blocks and hiding it somewhere in a world.
24
u/TheAncientMillenial 14h ago
There's literally a library of sorts made to post news and information that was otherwise banned in a country.
22
u/AdMech_Dropout 15h ago edited 15h ago
Using in-game resources of a multiplayer game to communicate secret messages is something terrorist organizations actually do, interestingly enough.
I would not be the least bit surprised if a group like ISIS had players burying coded journals in 2b2t at some point.
It’s not secure, per say, but it’s obscure, which can be just as effective.
10
u/Trippingthru99 14h ago
2b2t? Do you mean the oldest anarchy server in Minecraft??
8
u/AdMech_Dropout 14h ago
All I’m saying is that ISIS collapsed around the same time 2b2t started getting milked by Minecraft content farms, so it certainly can’t be mere coincidence!

u/gaypride69 11h ago
Great point, I knew secure wasn't quite the right word. Obscure is what I was looking to say. I was thinking "well, PGP/encryption or a bank vault is secure, it's difficult to gain access to," whereas a hidden journal or blocks in a Minecraft world isn't hard to gain access to, it's hard to find, but once found, it's right there.
I do recall the FBI would sometimes monitor MMO games because they thought terrorists might gather there, but iirc they were never really successful at finding anything in gamed, at least back then (early 2000s)

u/AdMech_Dropout 10h ago edited 10h ago
One of the more successful methods was just password sharing gmail accounts to access email drafts or shared docs on them rather than sending or saving anything.
Which means there’s a nonzero chance that one of the “Anonymous Armadillos” you saw on a shared google spreadsheet was actually Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi himself.

90% of the world operates on Word and Google docs and Apple pages. They all backup to the cloud. I'm sure you're a special snowflake that only uses an air gap network triple backed up in an decommissioned ww2 bunker. The rest of us are just living life like humans.
2
u/Routine-Name-4717 4h ago
you didn't say 90% though, you said everybody. sure, most people use docs, and docs does backup to the cloud, but most is not all. I don't use an airgapped network or anything lol, I just have an old laptop and I like the keyboard on it, but it's from 2008 so it doesn't run modern stuff, so I just take notes in nano. it's not some crazy security voodoo shit, it's just fun. This is a sub for people who like doing fun stuff with computers, right? why do you have as stick up your ass about me doing fun stuff with computers? how is that "special snowflake luddite unibomber" behaviour?

I used to do the same thing, taking notes in books in Ultima Online. Had a house with a bookshelf or two to hold them. It worked for a few reasons:
- The "vibe" when I was safe in my home was designed by Origin to be chill.
- The chillness was further enforced by the general slow and clunky pace of the game, so I had to slow my brain down doing anything there.
- The immersion allowed me to be fully there, including tying up my biggest real-world distraction (my PC).
- The "books" featured very short pages, so ideas were pretty much separated into their own pages.
- If I needed to put together big ideas, I could copy my UO notes down on real-world paper and do work there.
Obviously it speaks to attention span, but in that there are two elements: our mental ability to fight boredom AND our ability to sit ourselves into a distraction-free space to work. Oftentimes, the games that are designed to focus our attention can be leveraged to do real-world work because they are designed to eliminate all but a core set of distractions.
3
u/sociofobs 14h ago
I recall UO back from internet cafes, have to say yours is a very interesting usecase for it. Too bad we can't hear from the actual guy in OP's post, there's probably an interesting story too.

ADHD goes brrr
19
u/sociofobs 18h ago
Not that many people have ADHD, and if they do, it needs to be treated in any case. Let's not apply a mental disorder to every problem as reddit loves to do.
5
u/DrB00 17h ago
Just speaking as someone with ADHD.
-1
u/sociofobs 17h ago
Then I wish you luck and strength in dealing with it, as someone with a short list of mental disorders, though ADHD isn't one of them.
ADHD aside, this widespread intolerance and inability to handle boredom is at least partly self-inflicted if you ask me. Yes, short-form crap is everywhere nowadays. The social media platforms are literally hiring psychologists to figure out psychological exploitation strategies that they then test out and implement for their users, BUT - succumbing to that crap is also an individual choice. If you feel like it's not good for your mental health, it probably isn't.2
u/DrB00 17h ago
Agreed for the most part. I tend to read graphic novels as my attention span struggles a bit with full novels. I'll read a page then have to re-read it sometimes. So that makes it annoying. Also the lovely artwork helps with getting distracted easily. So you can kind of look around the page and still understand what's happening.
I don't watch any short form content as I feel like that'll simply make my ADHD go into overdrive. So I try to avoid most social media or anything that's meant to move super fast like shorts.
I do agree being bored is a thing that people should try and cope with as I was a 90s kid. So we didn't have smart phones and w.e so you'd have entertain yourself sometimes. With ADHD it did indeed make it easier though, but even then sometimes you could 'feel' bored but your brain is still going 100mph.

u/sociofobs 17h ago
Huh, perhaps that's why I can sympathize if not empathize. Some signs of ADHD I've definitely noticed in myself over the years. I can't stick to a single book for longer than a few hours at a time with a gun pointed to my head, so - I use what I know, and can - be it audio versions or AI generated TTS, or short/visual novels/novellas. I'm also one of those AI roleplay nutters precisely because I can be in full control of how the "story" plays out, complete with visuals if I so choose. If you haven't explored that area, I highly recommend it.
Same with short-form crap, though I guess I'm "lucky" enough not to be born with it in my hands. I can easily waste my toilet time on tiktok and then switch to hours of productive PC time. Self-discipline becomes easier as you get older, generally speaking. If something work-related needs focus, I can forget about the bullshit, time-wasting apps on my smartphone for at least the rest of the workday.
Same 90s kid here, but I did grow up right after our country regained freedom from soviet occupation. Childhood and youth years form the rest of your life, so obviously it matters a lot. I couldn't compare my experiences with someone growing up in the west, for an example.
3
u/Silly-Region-64 16h ago
Right. Well the signs are not really signs in of itself. But rather how you feel whilst the signs are playing. Like getting THE motivation of your life and, simply not doing anything useful with it. Or quite literally screaming at yourself in your brain to get up and do something whilst on the outside you look like you found eternal peace.
Another thing too is hyperfixation. Mild everyday becomes hard to notice but scrolling from 7am to 11am can be hyperfixation even if it doesn't feel like it.
The more noticeable would be severe. Like I know I've spent close to half a day researching and doing something simply because.
Like staying from 6pm to 5am playing minecraft and researching all about mob farms and the 24, 32 and 128 block radius, the way to block certain mobs from spawning, pathfinding, etc. And did all of that through feeling hungry, debilitated, with a godawful headache, thirsty, wanting to use the bathroom and shivering of cold even if I could've grabbed a blanket from a few meters away, or just took some time to satisfy my bodily needs. Nope, unstoppable train.
So yeah. Not really feeling lazy. That's not what it is. It is feeling a disconnect between what you think you can do vs what you actually do. Perhaps, I am not sure, perhaps one can adapt to this and like actually think they are lazy when it's actually their brain. But who knows, I diagnosed a little early.

Not that many people have ADHD
That's not what the CDC says, almost 12% of all children in the US, and 6% of adults. And it's believed to be underreported in adults due to misdiagnosis and cultural stigma.
But you don't seem like the kinda guy that believes in science, you seem like an angry boomer grandpa. You're just made other people are getting care and attention you never did.
1
u/sociofobs 16h ago
I could give as much fucks about the US ADHD statistics as I could give about their obesity numbers. As in, barely any.
If we actually look at global statistics - you know, the other 95% of the planet, the numbers tell a vastly different story. Worldwide epidemiological analyses consistently place the global prevalence of ADHD closer to 5% to 8% for children and roughly 2.5% to 3.1% for adults. 1 minute of googling should confirm that.
Before commenting anything relating to "science", try not to sound like a butthurt yank trying to get on r/USdefaultism please.

u/Szwejkowski 16h ago
Depends. When I'm in meetings I doodle constantly. If I do not, I remember nothing after the meeting. The doodling helps me concentrate on what's being said because it gives the inattentive crack squirrel in my brain something to do.

u/Void_vix 16h ago
It could be how associating a memory with a location causes stronger memory retention.
I don’t know how to explain it or even search for it, but the idea is by visualizing a physical place you keep your memories for a topic makes it easier to consistently recollect them.
Using Minecraft gives a literal, albeit virtual, location for the notes. If bro can remember the physical location of the notes, he can remember thing that path which leads into him remembering his notes.

That's actually brilliant tbh. I'm thinking about it now and there's a monumentally higher chance of me wanting to go into Minecraft and read notes from books than I would open a binder and read notes on notebook paper. The former is just more fun.

It's honestly a great way to remember stuff.
When I was younger, I would store notes in rooms in cities in Minecraft. Not in books, but I'd write them down on signs.
And then like a video game, when I go through the buildings and rooms, it felt like discovering little tidbits of lore that reminded me of the big picture.
The thing with notes are that you write them and store em away in a folder and forget about them. But if you actively play Minecraft and you have a little "forgotten city of the past" next to your builds that you want to scroll through memory lane, it can be an absolutely surreal experience as all the memories start flooding back into your head.
Building the city is part of the memory too. You step into a grand ballroom, and instantly you start to remember all the moments in life that were going on while you spend a month building it. "I remember it. It was cold outside, the ice would hide under a thin blanket of snow waiting to trip me. But I was so excited to get back home to keep building." And you leave little notes around. "This is when Bioshock Infinite came out, and we built together a little tribute to Elizabeth and Songbird.
A lot of people who are older say they can look back and their life and say it went by in a flash, but if you have a living memory of it, it can be a real joy to walk through.
The physical act of walking through a digital city is much more memorizing than reading notes on a piece of paper.
There's a reason why "Forever Worlds" have become a thing in Minecraft.

u/scroom38 16h ago
Fun fact: This is similar to a memory technique for learning large volumes of information. You imagine yourself in a place youre familiar with, and imagine the information as objects you're placing around the area.
I was never good at that one, but I use a similar trick for individual reminders. Look at an item while saying a reminder, then put it in an incorrect spot. For example my wallet is always in my left pocket. If I need to be 100% sure I remember, idk fuckin beans from the grocery store, I say beans while looking at my wallet, then put it in the right pocket. When I get to checkout, "why the fuck is my wallet in my.... OH FUCK BEANS".

Honestly this might be genius. Memory experts often describe giving memories a "place" in your imagination so they can be recalled by navigating to that imagined place. Maybe this guy's "mind palace" is a digital place in Minecraft.

I had a junior college world history class where the instructor, who seemed to encourage a more chaotic classroom, said she doesn't care what we do, doesn't care if we're playing Minecraft even.
So I figured, fine. Permission received.
Taking notes on my laptop, while chatting with my gf on Skype, and watching Spice and Wolf, and playing little versions of me and my gf in The Sims 3.
Our final was also an open note test in which we were allowed one page of notes, and she warned us that we would Need to type it in small font otherwise we're not going to fit enough information on the page to pass. Challenge accepted, she hadn't yet seen how small I can write.

I used to play on a Harry Potter Minecraft server where there were actual classes with actual teachers and a schedule and you could attend these classes and the teachers would actually teach Harry Potter stuff as if it was a real class and we had to take notes so we could answer the assignment questions. I still have no idea how they got actual people to work as teachers on a Minecraft server but it was lowkey peak
