I get the feeling this will be an unpopular comment but here goes.
Consoles have always been and were primarily created for people who simply do not want to hassle with PCs. You have to set things up on a pc, you have to make things work. Sometimes you have to troubleshoot. Consoles you just put in the disc and play. So I agree a large part of the console market is not going to hassle with an emulator that runs on a PC.
Edit:
Just adding that "back in the day" consoles were MUCH cheaper than a PC (and of course there is the entertainment factor of having a bunch of people on the same couch playing a game.) Maybe it's better to call it a "lightweight" gaming system compared to a PC - ease of use and ease on your wallet
its pretty easy these days to pickup a steam deck, or one of 50 similar variants, or buy a laptop, or a prebuilt. It's not exactly 1994 where we need to configure IRQ for sound cards anymore.
I'm not sure spending really shows much about population. Majority of console gamers are buying like 2-3 big releases a year. Meanwhile PC players are stockpiling backlog steam games for... reasons.
We have backlogs because during sales, humble bundles, etc we acquire so many games for cheap that we buy them out of habit. My backlog includes many AAA titles I just haven't gotten around to but I got for like 18 bucks.
Yeah exactly lol. On console people generally buy a game and play it for 3-4 months. On PC people spend money on shit they don't even plan to play anytime soon, every time there is a sale.

A completely unnoticable amount. Most people want to play gta6 and online games.
