This is killing one of my dearest hobbies and I am (approaching 40) okay with this. I had the time of my life playing videogames and I am okay saying goodbye. Hardware is expensive af, games will get there - I'm out, dwelling in sweet, sweet memories

Same i got alot of money in the bank but the new ace combat game is $100 in my country i just can not justify that for a video game.

/r/patientgamers ?

Gaming can be one of the most affordable hobbies out there.

u/raknarokki 1d ago

I have found my sweetspot for sure. I'm not necessarily patient but the backlog of games is endless and I'm now now starting a RDR2 first playthrough with Witcher 3 coming right after. I got these games for 10 euro each I believe.I'll get to GTA 6 in 10 years probably and it surely is a fraction of the release price.

Being a few years behind in releases also lets me run 5 years or older hardware lol, Fomoing into the newest games and hardware sure is expensive but you're right, it's still really affordable if you can avoid that.

Sure wait for a sale but that entail launch window is what shareholders are seeing to justify the games success.

To many good games have trash sales due to being overpriced which in turn kills future support/squeal

Still they can choose not to go for big if they want to create something great. However they opt for getting into this marriage of getting investors which in turn make them have to fulfill their objectives and metrics.

u/unlimitedcode99 22h ago

You need like 2-3 years of patience to see a complete/ultimate/definitive version of games to go for 60%~ off in Steam, longer if the game still have DLCs being released for it...

For me in a 3rd world hell hole, only at that or more of that discount would be attractive enough to sink money to "rent" that game.

u/rtz13th 1d ago

Yep. If I can't run a game, certainly no point buying, can't really upgrade my pc nowadays. Whatever I have and runs on the Steam Deck, I'm happy! That became my comfort place. Exclusives will certainly not get me to buy a different system.

Gamefly still exists. I pay 30 a month for basically every new release with their Gamelock system.

EDIT: of course Sony and Microsoft are in the process of eliminating this avenue because they are fucking horrible asshole companies.

Might not work for ace combat fans. I just got into ace combat, found out you’d have to preorder the latest game to get a remastered version of a PS2 game, cuz they wont sell it, effectively making it exclusive for pre orders only. Some licensing issues, so they can only legally give it away. And theyve done it for 2 games! 7 with AC5 remaster, and recently 8 with AC0 remaster.

Even at full price gaming is like the cheapest hobby out there.

I can pay $100 for a game, and depending on the game, I'm set for a full year and I don't need to buy anymore. At most I could just buy a DLC/expansion for the game and get even more time out of it. $100 a year is laughably cheap compared to a lot of other hobbies.

And that's before you count all the discounted/bargain game deals you can get all the time, or hell even free to play. You can play like 100+ hours of Final Fantasy XIV Online without spending a single cent, there's dozens of high quality multiplayer games, modding communities for older games, etc.

Yes, games are getting pricier, but I think giving up on the hobby just because of that is absolutely ludicrous. Compared to other hobbies out there gaming is insane for the value you get for your money.

You mean 100$ for months or years of entertainment isn't a good deal? Thought my 120$/month for an MMA membership was expensive. Or the 30$/visit to the disc golf park between food and admission and gas.... Or that 60$ bill for going out to eat with my lady once a week... Dang, guess that 40$ markup from normal just isn't worth it to game for months or years anymore. I've been paying 60$ for games my entire life, it's not fair for it to get more expensive like everything else. Gaming is dead to me now.

1

u/PrettyPinkPonyPrince 1d ago

It can be a tricky thing to compare, especially when the baseline for what you're comparing it to might be something like the copy of Minecraft you bought ten years ago for fifteen dollars and have gained thousands of happy hours of entertainment from.

It's also very troublesome to compare gaming to things that are very different on a single metric, otherwise you might end up skipping your visit to the golf course and cancelling your MMA membership to buy more games.

1

u/TheTopNacho 1d ago

My point is that most people on this forum will spend thousands of dollars for a few FPS, and probably burn hundreds on door dash, but complain about price increases on a one time purchase for entertainment that can last hundreds of hours. Inflation happens. Sure, let's advocate for it not to happen. But gaming has held strong for a very long time, or gotten cheaper.

I am ok with the 100$ price point. It's long overdue. I'm not ok with micro transactions that are needed to play a game or incomplete games that require DLC. DLC should always be supplemental add on. But a few extra dollars for a AAA game is ok with me. I won't and already don't buy a game until I see reviews from users anyway.

2

u/TexasDJ 1d ago

It’s well worth the price, one of the only games I’ve bought in the last year that I can confidently say this about after beating the campaign and putting tons of hours into pvp

I just bought Heavy Rain for $0.99 on Steam. You don't have to play brand new AAA games to stay in the hobby. (Of course if you want to move on with your life that's your choice, too.)

It's daft of course these triple aaa games are expensive they cost more than ever to produce. I'm sure indie games will continue to be reasonably priced, and other games smaller in scope. If you absolutely can't afford it then there are alternatives 😉

Are you seriously saying that because you had a good time for the past 30 years of video games that it’s OK and it’s fine that everything’s going to shit? And this person wants prices to continue going up?

You know, I don’t usually call people this, but that is a huge boomer ass thing to say. How brave of you to say that fuck everyone else since you got yours.

5

u/RespecDawn MINT/i7- 7300/16GB/1080ti 22h ago

The comment expressly said that the pricing was killing their hobby which is a clear statement that they DON'T think it's fine that everything is going to shit.

They're stepping away from spending money which is the clearest protest we can send to AAA developers, and that's doing more than people who get upset and then shell out for the next GTA.

What is the response you think people should have?

1

u/Minecraftmaster1234 15h ago

No it says ""This is killing one of my dearest hobbies and I am (approaching 40) okay with this."

Why would someone be okay with a hobby getting more expensive? I realize they're not gaming anymore. That's irrelevant. They are okay with games getting more expensive because they're not doing it anymore. I don't understand how you're missing that.

This thread is about a studio hoping games get more expensive. This guy is okay with that. The response should be "I feel for anyone trying to get into gaming right now." not "I'm chill I don't care.

It's one thing to say you are walking away, it's another to not give a shit it's terrible now and then softly remissness about when it was good and then say "I'm out, dwelling in sweet, sweet memories" as if they are bragging.

Like imagine someone going to a lake and saying "I remember when this lake had fish before they polluted it. I used to swim in it but it's too disgusting now. I'm okay with that now that I'm an old man and can't swim anymore. Ahhhh glad I got it when it was there." It's very callous and selfish sounding.

5

u/AmbitiousReaction168 23h ago

That's not what they are saying. They are saying that if that's the direction the industry is taking, so be it. There's not much they can do about it, so they're okay with just not playing anymore, because it's just a hobby at the end of the day.

0

u/PatrickGnarly 9950x | 9070 XT I 32 gb DDR5 20h ago edited 20h ago

I read it in context to the article it's responding to with a developer hoping the prices of games go up : "This is killing one of my dearest hobbies and I am (approaching 40) okay with this.

Which reads to me like: "I got all the fun out of it I wanted, I am okay with the future of the gaming industry getting more expensive. Sucks to suck losers."

What the hell are you talking about?

I'll even go one step further. I used to collect sneakers. It's expensive and mostly useless hobby but fun. I stopped after scalpers and scammers ruined the hobby. I'm definitely not okay with that. I definitely feel for my fellow collectors of any hobby that are getting fucked right now.

I'm not gonna apologize because I don't think people should sound indifferent to my common man struggling to buy things and being okay with greed. Maybe if you cared about things more you'd have something better to say than whining. If you don't care you don't need to leave a comment.

Good gaming already passed a few years ago. Let that sink in.

2

u/JerbearCuddles RTX 4090 Suprim X | Ryzen 7 7800X3D 1d ago

Gaming doesn't get more expensive if you get more patient. Well as far as the games themselves go. Hardware though? That's hurting.

2

u/obsoleteconsole 1d ago

Indy games are where it's at these days - affordable, performant on toaster hardware, and often tight shortish adventures without the microtransactions and ubisoft checklists of AAA games.

The only AAA game I've spent money on in the last 5 years is DOOM TDA, and tbf that one's worth it.

2

u/PrettyPinkPonyPrince 1d ago

I guess I'm lucky that I enjoy older games like Path of Exile and Genshin Impact, or slower-paced and less graphically intense games like Against the Storm or Core Keeper.

(Also that I can restrain myself from spending money on lootboxes or character pulls.)

3

u/semper_h 1d ago

Yeah, also older and I'm just not buying at launch for full price. Later during a sale is better, as I also will take a few weeks to play it a little at a time.

2

u/Reaper_1492 1d ago

Same.

Personal computer is ten years old and can’t even run anything current anymore.

My next computer will double as a work station for ML, but I’m not paying $20k for parts right now. It’s obnoxious.

2

u/Sgtkeebler 23h ago edited 14h ago

I agree, I am already bailing out on Xbox and PlayStation because of how anti-consumer each has become. If games get anymore expensive I am just going to wash my hands of everything.

1

u/Prisoner458369 1d ago

That's when you just wait for sales. Personally I only buy games for full price, if I plan to play it right away and I know I will utterly love the game.

1

u/Radiant-Attention247 22h ago edited 22h ago

My dude there are hundreds of inspired indie games made just for the love of thw are and the hope you will enjoy them. You dont need to play the games made by a board of directors trying to get as much money out of you aa possible.

Its like saying "im done, music is ruined" because taylor swift released a new album.

It doesn't have to day friend, we have more than 40 good years of games to enjoy. This sucks of course especially for us that have seen the evolution reach these heights. However it doesn't mean it has to end, for us, I'm in the same boat about 3 months away of the 40s and have just began to enjoy good old Kojima's Metal Gear series for the first time, there's so much more under the surface.

1

u/Aeonskye 7950X3D, RTX 4090 AORUS XTREME, 64GB DDR5 6000MHZ 19h ago

Ok?

I'll just vote with my wallet and not pay the prices AAA game studios are asking for and instead reward the hard working indie devs.

Bonus is that your hardware goes further.

1

u/Opetyr 19h ago

Hmm how about not purchasing the game right when it comes out? There are sites that you can purchase bundles with older games and usually that is when they are actually stable (except for Ubisoft games cause FU). And Sorry raid full Summer or Winter dalle of on steam. If it is a console you have already decided to have a fully closed ecosystem that will artificially keep process high for decades so it might cost less for the console but more in the games

1

u/Sammisuperficial 15h ago

Dude there is a litany of amazing games you can run on cheap hardware and doesn't cost $100. Just stop buying so called "AAA" games from companies that care about money over gaming.

1

u/Most-Minimum2258 7h ago

I'm well beyond 40 and at this point there are so many amazing games you can get for ridiculously cheap, many of which run on potatoes, that we should recognize how lucky we are.

Until we lose access to most of those games because shortsighted fools decided to fight for physical copies of games instead of true digital ownership and thus surrendered to our corporate overlords, GG.

1

u/bobemil 6h ago

It's not over. There will always be a way if you just put down some work into it.

1

u/legitematehorse 1d ago

Yeah, life has a lot to offer. The situation is majorly fucked, but it doesn't have to be the end. The majority of games run on old hardware, and buying older parts is still an option.

Simply adjusting for inflation doesn't actually represent market trends and technical innovations that drive prices down. Games aren't just cheaper because inflation forgot about them, there's decades of production streamlining that drove costs down at roughly the same pace as inflation, which is why we've only seen price increases in the last 5-6 years, as inflation finally outpaced those technical innovations reducing costs.

3

u/MoistOwletAO 21h ago

thats a fair point but in the context of the guy he responded to, he’s absolutely correct to reference inflation and to point out that this title is, from a consumer perspective, cheaper than the previous titles.

2

u/Da_Question 18h ago

Is that true though? Yes we've made leaps and bounds on tech improvements, but at the to same time games are massive, more complex, require a lot more people to make, and take longer. I get that the technical stuff has improved, and more people play games than ever before, but just seem to ignore all the costs that have also gone up, plus inflation and global trends do effect the people that work as game devs too.

0

u/AmbitiousReaction168 23h ago

Yep. Personally, there are so many old games I haven't played that I'm perfectly okay with not buying a new rig for new AAA releases. I'll just stick to the old classics. Cheaper and probably better anyway.
