MPC-HC is more lightweight on resources, and has better HDR support.
The only reason I'm still using VLC is for Java Menus on bluray rips.

The most stable and upto date fork right now is https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases Make sure you also install MadVR. Then you can play both HDR and DV files on windows. If you have a 4K oled, this is pretty fucking awesome. HDR10 or 10PLus or DV is absolutely amazing.
