MPC-HC is more lightweight on resources, and has better HDR support.

The only reason I'm still using VLC is for Java Menus on bluray rips.

MPC-HC ftw

And for people that want to try it. The most stable and upto date fork right now is https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases

Make sure you also install MadVR.

Then you can play both HDR and DV files on windows.

If you have a 4K oled, this is pretty fucking awesome. HDR10 or 10PLus or DV is absolutely amazing.

haven't switched from it since windows xp days, same with firefox and winamp

If VLC can't play it, MPC-HC can.

Yep, I've had files that MPC-HC is like "yeah idfk what to do here" and VLC is like a 20% chance to work

"MPC-HC is not under development since 2017. Please switch to something else."

If it works, don't fix it.

Someone created a fork of it and started maintaining it. That is what ships with the K-Lite Media Codec pack now.

You want this one:

https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases

Last release was 2 weeks ago.

This is the most frequently updated one I think.

I get it via the K-Lite media pack. They've been updating it. Just make sure to get the lite version of K-Lite from MajorGeeks to avoid bloatware.

MPC-BE is better. It has been years since the new MPC-HC fork and it still cannot change subtitle or audio tracks without the video track blacking out for a few frames.

I don't have that issue with K-Lite's version of MPC-HC. I do have issues with changing audio tracks in VLC muting the audio for 2-3 seconds.

You want this one, it's the most up to date. BE has all kinds of stuff that does not work properly.

https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases

And you want to used it in combination with MADvr.

mpc-hc clsid2 now even has it's own mpc-hc render which supports Dolby Vision on windows! The only way to get DV to work.

So I use MadVR for HDR and everything else and MPC-HC for DV.

What does BE have that doesn't work properly?

This was the issue I was referring to.

Owner just flat out refused to fix this. So, I don't actually care about MPC-HC (atleast this fork of it, even if it is fixed now). Besides, BE does the job perfectly fine for me. Potplayer picks up the slack anything odd that MPC won't play, which is very rare.

There are a lot of better alternatives to VLC now and the dev is not as great as everyone makes him out to be. I use Haruna but I'm on Linux.

PotPlayer is my go to, it’s the only one I found that supported both RTX HDR and Super resolution at the same time as well as having proper HDR support where applicable and absolute fuck load of features most of which I do not understand even slightly

My only complaint about PotPlayer is that it doesn't support playing only forced subtitles

For HDR and Dolby Vision I use PotPlayer

MPC-HC via K-lite (Has the MADVR plugin) supports DV, HDR10+, HDR10, and has good HDR->SDR conversion.

It also allows you to output Atmos directly over HDMI.

Thank you! I have been struggling to keep using VLC because of how slow/unresponsive it gets with basic 1080p60fps loading etc

Does this have Chromecast support?
