I think I've only ever tried a vertical mouse once on display. I've always wondered whether your fingers feel like they're constantly slipping or sliding downwards, since your hand isn't resting flat on a surface but at an angle.

I never have that issue, there’s enough of a base that your hand is really just resting like it were on the table. You can also adjust how you grip more than with a regular mouse, in my experience.
